1 TABLE OF CONTENTS LUND UNIVERSITY SWEDEN Part I Activity Log P. 2-5 Part II General Exchange Information... P. 6-8 Part III Checklist P BASIC FACTS Lund University (Swedish: Lunds universitet) is one of northern Europe's oldest and most prestigious universities, consistently ranking among the world's top 100 universities.

2 Part I Activity Log January 2015 Lund is a perfect city for study and living. It has unique culture, nice weather, interesting people, and beautiful scenery. On arrival day, there were mentors waiting for exchange students at the Copenhagen Airport and Lund Central Train Station, and they drove us to a school building to get the welcoming package. On the registration day, international coordinators gave us brief introduction of the university and we completed the registration and confirmed all the courses to be taken. During the first two weeks, there were lots of orientation activities, including short tours, dinner, food tasting and some compulsory activities. These activities gave me a good chance to meet other exchange students and to meet new friends. Also, I have taken one Swedish Language course, three economics course and one finance master course. The courses were quite useful and I can understand more about European societies and cultures through the courses as many European examples and case studies are discussed in the lectures and group assignments. February 2015 We celebrate Chinese New Year with my Chinese friends. It was a very nice gathering and we chat a lot about the life in Lund. We cooked our own dishes as dining out is quite expensive in Sweden, especially for dinner. In this month, the weather is very cold and not comfortable to go out. I went to Stockholm for a short trip this month. As the weather is very cold, it is not comfortable to travel. However, the unique snowing scenery is quite amazing as everything is covered with snow, it is a unique experience. As far as travelling goes once you are in Lund you can pretty much walk anywhere; however I highly recommend you buy a bike. Everyone cycles everywhere in Lund and there are many occasions where you will need one. Also, I went to Oslo for a short trip. The sea is quite beautiful in the evening but things there are more expensive than in Sweden. March 2015 Courses for period 1 were coming to an end and exams have started this month. I used quite a lot of time in studying these two courses, especially the finance master course. This course is quite difficult as it requires us to do a big valuation project with group mates and revise for an exam. As I need to meet with my group mates to discuss the project, I basically stay at Lund and do not have much travelling this much. After the exams, I went to Copenhagen and other small cities in southern part of Sweden to relax a little bit. As there is no holiday between period 1 and period 2, we need to attend lectures again right after the exams end. April 2015 At the beginning of April, I made use of the Easter holiday and took a trip to Amsterdam, Belgium and Germany. As there are many tourists travelling during Easter, I will recommend you to plan your trip at least one and a half month earlier as it is hard to book hostels and air tickets. There is no official Easter holiday for students in Lund, so you might not have any

3 holidays at all. Fortunately, I have more than a week so that I can plan my trip. Generally, travelling in Europe is quite convenient. But you should plan every details for your trip such as transportation and attractions to ensure your plan go smoothly. May 2015 and June 2015 In May, I joined some social activities held by Lund University. You should check the newsletter sent by the university to your regularly if you wish to meet other international students and Swedish people. This year, they held several excursions and hiking trip near the end of the semester. I joined their trip to wetland Kristianstad and Helsingborg. It is quite comfortable to go hiking as the weather is very good in May. Also, I travelled to United Kingdom, London, Edinburgh and Dublin before I leave Sweden. Overall, the exchange program is very interesting and useful as it is a very valuable experience to me. I love living in Lund as it is very comfortable and people are very friendly.

4 Part II GENERAL EXCHANGE INFORMATION 1)Visa Procedures We need to apply residential permit in order to stay in Sweden more than three months. You can apply online through the website. Lots of documents are required for the application, including a bank statement and an insurance proof. The insurance provided by university doesn t cover for travelling outside Sweden, so you should buy one more in insurance company or bank. Regarding the process of application, applying it in Hong Kong is really very slow. I need to wait until I arrived Sweden and apply once again in Malmo Migration Office to have my card sent to my home address in Sweden to be ready for use. 2) Accommodations During the whole exchange period, I lived in a corridor dormitory called Brunnsbo, which is the quite far away from the business school. All the rooms have a private toilet and shower, while the kitchen is shared and it is located in the common room. The rent for this type of room is quite expensive, similar to studio flat located right next to the business school. The advantage of living in Brunnsbo is that it is located very close to the city center and station. McDonald and the largest supermarket chain Coop is just less than five minutes walk. Since there are no restaurants and shops next to business school, it is more convenient to go out and travel around Europe. There is one student nation nearby and social activities are very common in this corridor. To go to business school, walking is around 20 minutes. You can also take the bus no.3 to train station. If you buy a bike, it is very convenient to travel in Lund. Internet is available in the room. When you arrived, you can plug in the LAN wire and connect to your computer. Laundry is totally free. I think this room type is good especially for people who like travelling and going to party at night. To apply for accommodation, you should apply it right after the application opens. It said it is allocated based on first-come-first-served basis. 3) Courses Registration On the registration day, international coordinators gave us brief introduction of the university and we completed the registration and confirmed all the courses to be taken. HKUST students are allowed to choose up to 4 courses with 2 alternatives for each course chosen during the first registration. In this semester, no students are allowed to take more than 4 courses. Courses generally include projects and exams. Workload is not very heavy here. 4) Teaching & Assessment Methods Lectures in Lund are impressive; most have relatively small class sizes (around 50 students). The year is split into 2 Semesters, with each semester split into two demi-semesters which tend to be fairly intensive. Most courses will have around 8-10 hours of lectures a week with additional reading, although they have the advantage of being over in 6 (or 12) weeks. Exams are normally taken at the end of each course (after a short period off for revision) and are a refreshingly relaxed affair. Exams are listed as lasting five hours for most subjects, don t panic this is only the maximum time limit.

5 Most students finish exams after 3 hours or less. This gives a much more relaxed feel to exams as running out of time is not an issue. 5) Cost/Expenses The currency used in Sweden is Swedish kronor (SEK). The most popular foreign exchange bank is called Forex Bank, which the banks are located near the train station and the bus station. You can bring an ATM card with plus or circus logo to use it in Sweden. Return air tickets between HK and Copenhagen (Emirates) Housing (Brunnsbo) Residential permit (visa) Insurance Travelling Food and nation activities Others Total 9500 HKD SEK 1100 SEK 1500 HKD SEK 8000 SEK 3000 SEK SEK 6) Social Clubs & Networking Opportunities International Desk organizes activities and excursions regular throughout the semester. There are 10 student nations here, which are similar to societies, they always hold social activities such as parties, dinner/lunch gatherings. Before you join any activities, you need to apply Studentlund membership online before you arrived Lund. 7) Health & Safety Lund is a very safe city as most of the people here are students. Of course, you should take care of your things. There are beggars on the street but they are quite nice. For health, take care for the changing weather and you can buy medicines easily in town. 8) Food Fast food shops like McDonald and Burger King are much more expensive than in Hong Kong. Generally, eating out is quite expensive. Most exchange students coo themselves. There is a café inside business school which is convenient for buying sandwiches, salad and coffee. There are some university restaurant located in LTH, SOL and Main Library. Buying food from supermarket is quite convenient and cheap. 9) Transportation The buses and trains are of a standard I have yet experienced elsewhere; always on time, clean, and with a very helpful on board destination scroll, it proves a welcome novelty when first used. Even if

6 you are not planning on using the public system intensively, it is worth buying a student discount card, as this makes domestic travel far cheaper. Many bikes prices are hiked during the 2-week period where international students have arrived. Once you have found one you like at a reasonable price (I would say around SEK condition dependant), get a lock. If you want to travel around Sweden, booking early makes everything a lot cheaper. Although you have to be fairly specific, if you can plan ahead it is economically worth it. 10) Climate The weather was quite cold when we arrived but it was getting colder when it started snowing at the end of January. The temperature was as low as -10 degrees at night when there was snow. But it was not that cold as it is quite 5 degrees in Hong Kong. From March to April, the average temperature is around 5-10 degrees. There will be snow in February but it is not very heavy ones. Starting from late April, the average temperature will be warmer and it is quite comfortable to celebrate the spring. 11) Communication 90% of Swedes speak English, making it easy to ask for help and advice. It does help to be organized and check your s frequently for the few important things that need to be done. Buy a Swedish simcard to make calls and access to web connection using 3G/4G network.
