3 Workforce and Professional Development Classes the mission OSHA 10-Hour for Construction Industry This course will provide training for entry-level workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in the construction industry. The program will also include information regarding workers rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. Through this training, OSHA helps to ensure that workers are more knowledgeable about workplace hazards and their rights. Participants who successfully complete the 10-hour course will receive a certificate of completion as well as an OSHA 10-hour construction wallet card. $199 (Register four employees and the fifth is free!) Monday, October 12, 8 AM 4 PM and Tuesday, October 13 8 AM Noon Attracting and Retaining the Next Generation Workforce Explore best practices of employers who are already leading the way in attracting, developing and retaining the younger generation of workers. Wednesday, September 30, 8:30 AM Noon Grant Writing: The Next Level NEW* This three-part class will focus on three topics: Performance and sustainability will help you develop measurable goals and objectives and create a project that is sustainable after the grant funding is complete. From competition to collaboration will show you how to approach potential partners and maintain control of your project with those partners. Friday, November 6, 8:30 AM Noon The New Supervisor You will learn the skills you need to become a supervisor: organizational and planning skills, negotiation, delegation skills, how jobs are designed, job rotation and evaluation, and how to lead and manage employees. You will also learn how to motivate and empower people, communicate with them, and the importance of being positive. Self-assessments and group activities will be used to demonstrate different leadership styles. This is a great course for managers and supervisors who are preparing for leadership roles in their organizations. Friday, November 6, 1 4:30 PM Outcomes Based Strategic Planning This program will help you and your organization approach strategic planning and program design by addressing several questions: What are the specific outcomes that we aim to achieve? What actions do we need to take in order to get there? How will we measure our progress? Key elements of the outcomes-planning approach will be examined, including defining mission and vision, setting ambitious targets and activities in support of desired outcomes, and identifying and serving both external and internal customers. Its main objectives are to introduce you to its basic features and give you an opportunity for hands-on practice. You ll learn about the types of information you need to track in your business or on the job, and you ll see how to enter that information and track it in QuickBooks. By the time you complete this course, you ll have a good idea of all that QuickBooks offers, be familiar with the most common tasks, and know where to find information about more advanced features. The course will cover: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-9 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third-party reimbursements. You will learn the basics of hand building, slab work, wheel throwing, and form and function with the freedom to tap into your creative self. Projects will include everything from bowls and mugs on the potter s wheel to hand-built forms. You will touch on multiple aspects of the ceramic world while discovering personal preferences within the realm of clay and glazes. Fee includes clay and glazes. $155 Thursdays, September 24 October 29, 5:30 7:30 PM Ceramics Studio, Pitt-Bradford Campus, Bradford Fall Foliage Photo Trek: Into the Forest Join award-winning photographer Ed Bernik on a one-day photo excursion into the Allegheny National Forest Region. During this course, scheduled at the peak of fall foliage, Ed will guide you on how to capture Mother Nature s beauty on film. The course will include photography instruction, box lunch, dinner and a full-day of photography, including photo critiques. The best photos will be featured on visitanf.com. Using the equipment you already have, you will learn about exposure, composition and light. You will learn the technical side and the seeing side of photography during evening indoor classes and a Saturday field trip. This is a fully hands-on course where you will learn by working with others under the guidance of a professional photographer. You will learn new skills and use skills you already have, such as time-exposures, tripod use/remote control, stop-motion, ghosting, light painting, perspective, depth of field, and more. Light walking and/or hiking may be required. We recommend you have basic knowledge of your camera and its functions. Class will be rescheduled for steady rain. $45 Wednesday, October 14, 5:30 8:30 PM Lobby, Frame-Westerberg Commons, Pitt-Bradford Campus Photo Retouching 101 Join local professional photographer Shawn Murray as he introduces you to basic editing techniques you can use on your own personal images. You will learn the programs you can use to enhance your images, the differences in jpeg and Raw file formats in editing, cropping for composition, changing white balance, portrait and landscape enhancements, and preparing your final image for print or online use. Spend an evening learning about the amazing history of the world s favorite drink, beer. $20 Wednesday, September 23, 5:30 7 PM Holiday Pysanky Traditional Ukranian Easter Eggs easily translate into beautiful winter/holiday decorations. In this one day course, instructor Shandra Wilson will guide you through the tradition and methods of Pysanky-making. You will have the opportunity to decorate your own Pysanky with the option of turning it into a hanging ornament, which make a great keepsake or gift. 6 Personal Enrichment and Recreation continued Wire Wrapping Cabochons Wire wrapping cabochon jewelry is a method of taking normal everyday wire and bending it around a cut and/or polished stone (cabochon). You can use a wide array of wire and stones, any of which can be made to look gorgeous. Wire and stones are included in the price of the course. (Anyone allergic to copper, has difficulty with wrist movement, or may have arthritis should refrain from taking this class.) $69 Tuesday and Thursday, November 3 and 5, 6 8:30 PM 1st Floor Art Room, Seneca Building, Bradford Landscape Oil Painting No experience needed. All supplies will be provided for this class in which you will begin and finish a 16x20 painting in oils. Join instructor Cindy Nowacki for this two-night relaxing and fun-filled class and take home a beautiful oil painting you create that will be ready for framing and display. Each session will feature a different painting. Limited seats available. $79 Monday, September 14, and Tuesday, September 15, 6 9 PM Or Monday, November 16, and Tuesday, November 17, 6 9 PM 1st Floor Art Room, Seneca Building, 2 Main St., Bradford Acrylic Painting This is a fun-filled, three-hour acrylic painting class for those who may have some painting experience or for those picking up a brush for the first time. Cindy Nowacki will teach you how to create an abstract landscape 16x20 acrylic painting on canvas in a step-by-step process that will lead to a completed painting suitable for framing. All materials are included. Each session will feature a different painting. Limited seats available. $45 Saturday, October 10, 1 4 PM or Monday, December 7, 6 9 PM 1st Floor Art Room, Seneca Building, 2 Main St., Bradford Mountain Biking for Fun and Fitness NEW* Learn the different types of mountain bikes and how to get the most out of them. You will also learn how to negotiate different types of obstacles on the trail and safety precautions. The class will include one indoor session and a fun beginning/intermediate trail ride so you can use your new skills. Tai Chi has gentle stretching and circular movements, integrates the body and mind, has many different forms and is enjoyable to practice. All previous students are welcome to attend for a refresher and advanced instruction. Visit to register. $90 Wellness Program We are pleased to continue to offer our popular Wellness Program, which enables you to enroll in any one-credit physical education class* and have full access to all the facilities offered in the Richard E. and Ruth McDowell Sport and Fitness Center. This program is open only to participants 18 and older. All participants are required to complete a one-hour student orientation program to become familiar with the facility, rules and proper use of equipment. *Enrollment in any of the physical education classes is optional. $225 per participant Fall Term, August 30 December 22 * Courses are available as long as there is capacity after all credit-seeking Pitt- Bradford students are enrolled in these courses. Wellness Program students do not receive any academic credit for participation in any physical education courses through this program. Tuesday, October 6, 8:30 AM Noon ServSafe Certification St. Marys The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture regulations state food service establishments shall employ at least one certified supervisory employee who has completed and passed an approved certification course. This ServSafe course meets that regulation. This course is for both new certifications and re-certifications of ServSafe. This series is designed for for-profit organizations that want to learn the methods and techniques to achieve Operational Excellence Session 1: Introduction to Operational Excellence and Aligning Metrics and Key Performance Indicators to the Operational Excellence Strategy The session will introduce and explore strategy and tactics trees that are used to define, validate, communicate and implement the Operational Excellence strategy. In order to achieve alignment throughout the organization and to have all employees working toward a common goal, it is imperative that the measurement system is aligned to this strategy. This session will also investigate the conflicts that traditional metrics create within organizations and will introduce the metrics needed to change the behaviors necessary to achieve break-through results. This session also will address how to define each improvement initiative and how to link it to the Operational Excellence Strategy. $40 Tuesday, September 22, 8:30 AM Noon Session 2: Lessons in Synchronous Flow for Operations You will learn the concept of Synchronous Flow and will evaluate the different methods for managing operations. This hands-on simulation will demonstrate and evaluate the different approaches to managing operations for any environment. The focus of this session will be to create a stable and capable delivery system to better serve customers that will set the stage for improving the overall performance of the organization. $40 Tuesday, September 29, 8:30 AM Noon Statistical Process Control St. Marys NEW* In this course you will review and learn the basic concepts of statistics and statistical techniques to manage and control processes. Designed to help personnel understand variation and the differences between inherent variation and special causes of variation, the course will focus on control charts and how to construct, interpret, and identify out-of-control conditions, along with the actions necessary to maintain process control. In addition, you will learn the different sources of variation, measurement variation, and techniques to identify and reduce variability. You will apply the principles in class exercises to reinforce the learning. $349 (register four employees and the fifth is free!) 8 Off-Campus Classes continued Basic Digital Photography St. Marys If you are interested in learning more about how to use your digital camera besides just pointing and shooting then you will want to take this course. You will learn about framing, composition, and creativity to help you take great pictures. Topics will include taking not just good, but great pictures; basic camera functions and their uses; taking pictures beyond the ordinary; and handling special scenes, including backlit scenes, sports and action photos, family and children portraits, landscapes, close-ups, and macro photography. You will need to bring your own digital camera. $75 Tuesday, October 6, and Thursday, October 8, 5:30 8:30 PM Advanced Digital Photography St. Marys Learn the creative side of using an adjustable 35mm digital SLR camera. You will learn how to use the manual features of your camera and create custom compositions; set your own exposure settings (f-stops and shutter speeds) and ISO and modes; manual focus vs. autofocus; and the lenses available for your camera (wide, telephoto, zoom, macro, etc.); and how to use basic filters, close-up lenses, macro and flash photography. You will also learn composition and framing, such as the rule of thirds, using diagonals, etc. You will need to bring your own digital SLR cameras. $75 Tuesday, October 27, and Thursday, October 29, 5:30 8:30 PM Community Education Council of Cameron and Elk Counties Out and About Photography St. Marys You will learn the creative side of taking outdoor photos of nature, city life, candids, still life and anything else imaginable. Level 1 classes will focus on beginners skills and will move at a slower pace. Level 2 classes will focus on more advanced skills with less individual assistance.
