3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (4-5 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Mr. Smith and Ms. Jones are in a family dinner. They are talking about the news featured last night. Mr. Smith: Did you watch the news last night? Ms. Jones: Yes, I did. The Web Connect Services was one of the headlines. People will be disappointed once they learn that the Web Connect accepts illegal money. Mr. Smith: Indeed. The news who broadcasted the news used to be a share holder of the company, too. So, she knew something about the bribery scandal. Ms. Jones: Yes, she was one of its former share holders. But she was fair in broadcasting the news. I admire her for that. But the news will have a big effect on the who watched it last night. Mr. Smith: A lot of people say that the scandal is not true at all. The company just wants to make some noise because they need the. I heard their business is already going down. Ms. Jones: Well that is very disappointing. They are destroying the company s name just for the sake of media exposure. I can t believe it! Mr. Smith: Indeed. But unfortunately, that s the way businesses sometimes go. 4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Verb Tenses Basic Past (5-6 minutes) General Description: The basic past form of the verb is used in events that happened sometime in the past. In forming the past tense of the verb, -ed, or d is added at the end of the verb. Ex. The New Times published the business news article yesterday. The word is is changed to was and the word are is changed to were. Ex. We are happy to serve you -> We were happy to serve you. The broadcaster is a graduate of State University -> The broadcaster was a graduate of State University. Remember: Sentences may also include time expressions such as yesterday, last night, last week, last month, etc. Examples: 1. Adding ed at the end of the verb (Structure: Verb + ed) Ex. I finished my report before I watched the news last night. 2. Adding d at the end of the verb (Structure: Verb + d) Ex. The cable operator charged us $15 for the live broadcast of the business conference. 3. Changing is to was for singular forms of verb Ex. She is absent today. -> She was absent yesterday. 4. Changing are to were for plural forms of verb Ex. They are here tonight to watch the interview with the executive director. They were here last night to watch the interview with the executive director. Page 4
