3 Lesson Title: Writing Your National Anthem Prepared By: Pat Bohl Grade Level: 6-8 MS.A.9; MS.D.9; MS.E.9 Time Required: 1-2 Classes 6-8 Lesson 9 of 9 in Unit: What is Government? Lesson 9 of 9 in Unit: Relationships Between Citizens and Legislators Lesson 9 of 9 in Unit: Citizen Rights and Responsibilities I. Essential Question: What are an American citizen s rights and responsibilities? II. III. IV. South Dakota Grade Level Content Standards: 7.C.2.1. Students are able to identify historical events that impacted individual governments. 7..C.2.1. Students are able to describe how citizens impact social and political issues. 8.US.2.1. Students are able to explain the impact of the American Revolution on American philosophies. Assessment Strategies: Student Generated National Anthem (see Attachment #3) Learning Objectives: 1. Students will identify the rights and responsibilities of an American citizen through the lyrics of The Star Spangled Banner. 2. Students explain their interpretation of an American citizen s rights and responsibilities. V. Necessary Materials/Technology: Computer Access VI. VII. Background Information: The teacher may want provide a historical background on the writing of the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key. Detailed Lesson Description 1. Teacher will provide students with the lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner (see Attachment #1). 2. Teacher will play the song while students follow along. 3. Students will interpret the lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner (see Attachment #2). 4. Teacher and students will generate a list of rights and responsibilities of American citizens. 4 5. Students will then write their own national anthem reflecting their interpretation of the rights and responsibilities that were generated by the class (see Attachment #3). VIII. IX. Enrichment Students can also generate their own music to go with their lyrics. Students can research national anthems from other countries. Students can research the history behind the anthem and reflect on the right, responsibilities, values, etc. reflected in the anthem. Foreign exchange students (possibly in the high school) could visit the class and do a presentation on their country including their national anthem. 5 Attachment #1 The Star Spangled Banner First Verse: Oh, say can you see, by the dawn s early light. What so proudly we hail d at the twilight s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro the perilous fight, O er the ramparts we watch d, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket s red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof thro the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Second Verse: On the shore dimly seen, thro the mists of the deep, Where the foe s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning s first beam, In full glory reflected, now shines in the stream; Tis the Star-Spangled Banner, Oh long may it wave O er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Third Verse: And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle s confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash d out their foul footstep s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Fourth Verse: Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand Between their loved homes and the war s desolation! Blest with vict ry and peace, may the heav n rescued land Praise the Pow r that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto, In God is our trust And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave O er the land of the free and the home of the brave. 6 Attachment #2 Student Interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner You are to interpret the lyrics of The Star Spangled Banner by answering the following questions. Also consider your responses to these questions as you prepare to write your own national anthem. How many verses are in The Star-Spangled Banner? How many lines are in each verse? Summarize the main points of the story told in the first verse? What do you think are three key words in the first verse and what do you see when you read or hear those words? Summarize the main points of the story told in the second verse? What do you think are three key words in the second verse and what do you see when you read or hear those words? Summarize the main points of the story told in the third verse? 7 Summarize the main points of the story told in the fourth verse? What do you think are three key words in the fourth verse and what do you see when you read or hear those words? In general what do you think are five key rights, responsibilities or values of every American citizen? (Keep these in mind when you get ready to write your anthem!) Your anthem should reflect what you think are important rights, responsibilities, and values of every American. You can use current or historic examples in your verse.
