1 Vice President, Development BC &Yukon THE OPPORTUNITY We are seeking a new Vice President, Development for BC & Yukon to lead our provincial fundraising efforts from individuals, foundations, and corporations to achieve the highest priority needs of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC). The Vice President will actively manage a growing portfolio of prospects and donors at various stages of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Additionally, the Vice President will provide support, leadership and guidance to the fourmember BC & Yukon Development team and others engaged in fundraising and donor relations. The BC & Yukon Development team s annual revenue goal is approximately $6.1M from corporations, foundations, and individuals. The Vice President, Development BC & Yukon will be an accomplished fundraiser with a proven track record of successful relationship management and major gift asks. The new incumbent will have a mastery of the technical aspects of fund development, and be committed to the principles and culture of philanthropy. Reporting to and working closely with the CEO for BC & Yukon, the Vice President, Development will have a dotted line report to the Vice President, Development Canada. The new Vice President, Development BC & Yukon will also work closely with the BC & Yukon Board of Directors, and with peers across the country. The Vice President, Development BC & Yukon will bring superior communication and relationship skills with donors and volunteers, and a genuine interest for interacting with people. Over the last 60 years, we have invested more than $1.45 billion in heart and stroke research, making us the largest contributor in Canada after the federal government. In that time, the death rate from heart disease and stroke has declined by more than 75 per cent. 2 Heart and Stroke and the dedicated researchers and clinicians we support have been generating lifesaving knowledge and expertise that have completely revolutionized the treatment and prevention of heart disease and stroke. The Foundation leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke, and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living, and advocacy. Heart and Stroke has designed two specific impact goals, and everything we do ladders up to achieving these goals. By 2020 we will: Reduce Canadians rate of death from heart disease and stroke by 25%. Significantly improve the health of Canadians by decreasing their risk factors for heart disease and stroke by 10%. The mission spans a broad continuum of care. It is organized around three key pillars: prevent heart disease and stroke; protect lives by advancing health outcomes for those undergoing treatment for our diseases; and promote recovery by supporting those whose lives have been affected by heart disease or stroke. Over 1 million generous Canadians across the country are helping us make great strides in our fight against heart disease and stroke by supporting us financially, and we are proud to have the support and talent of over 125,000 passionate volunteers from across Canada. With a new national CEO, new brand, and a reorganized structure, we are poised for great things. We are in the midst of developing National missionbased campaigns, and we are working closely with the Mission team and Advisory Boards to develop compelling donor engagement opportunities. The CEO of the BC & Yukon region is an engaging leader committed to fundraising success. The BC & Yukon Development team is a group of enthusiastic and collaborative colleagues. The National Executive Vice President, who oversees all national CEOs, maintains his office in Vancouver, furthering the strong sense of national engagement. To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following: A personal commitment and passion for our mission is exceptionally important in this role. Significant experience in major gifts and/or corporate partnership fundraising, with a track record of soliciting and closing gifts at the $1 million+ level. o Experience leading a major gift campaign would be an asset. Big-picture, strategic thinker comfortable working at a detailed level with a high degree of accuracy and quality. Experience in successfully recruiting, training, and managing a team of fundraising professionals. Persistence and perseverance to thrive in a complex organization; ability to see possibilities and focus on the positive. Strong analytical skills and ability to work with multiple databases. A go-getter attitude and one who leads by example. A coach, both willing to teach and learn. Energy and positivity, with the independence and drive to achieve. Confidence and initiative, with a default to action. A creative mind to develop new ideas, paired with tact and diplomacy. -3-

4 Strong emotional intelligence; humility complemented with confidence. A professional demeanor; friendly and approachable. Superb written and verbal communication skills, with experience in developing volunteer briefings; proposal, grant and letter writing; and donor/partner communications that build engagement. Appreciation and understanding of AFP, CAGP, APRA Code of Ethics, Policies and Procedures. CFRE designation and involvement in a professional association are assets. A university degree is required for this role. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Strategic Planning and Management Develop annual and multi-year plans to achieve goals and objectives. Develop annual revenue and expense budget, reviewing financial results and projections on a regular basis to mitigate challenges, optimize opportunities, and manage expenses. Lead the development and maintenance of robust pipelines for all of Development s donor/partner segments. Provide leadership and expertise to continue to build philanthropy as a core competency of the Foundation. Relationship Management Using networks, research, staff, and volunteer referrals, enhance the existing pipeline of interested philanthropists and partners. Using data, research, and referral networks, deepen relationships with existing supporters, potential donors/partners, and family foundation representatives through excellent stewardship and engagement. Lead stewardship and communication efforts with tailored and meaningful plans for our top donors/partners and prospects. Genuinely engage with senior volunteers to create enthusiasm for exercising their influence in their own communities. Collaborate closely with internal teams to develop and deliver high quality, highly customized proposals and solicitations. Oversee and personally cultivate, solicit, recognize, and steward key relationships working in partnership with the Provincial CEO, Provincial Board, and VP, Development - Canada. Donor/Partner Management Contribute to the research, qualification, and identification of new prospects, working cooperatively with other Development personnel in the process of prospect management and clearance. Effectively and successfully integrate the Foundation s mission, strategic plan, and case for support, and the role of philanthropy in achieving organizational goals with prospects/supporters. -4-

5 Liaise with appropriate internal teams and scientists to compellingly articulate the case for support to prospects. Develop and prioritize cultivation and solicitation strategies for assigned prospects and provide direction to the Development team. Conduct integrated solicitation efforts in support of highest priority needs. Work with internal legal counsel regarding complex philanthropic, legacy, and sponsorship gifts. Follow standard policies and procedures for the acceptance and administration of gifts. Negotiate gift terms and bring solicitations to closure with or independent of volunteer leadership (as appropriate). Deliver prompt, personal, and meaningful gift acknowledgement correspondence. Ensure appropriate meaningful recognition and thorough stewardship, including follow-through on the gift implementation, administration of the funds, and related expenditures. Develop and oversee execution of an annual stewardship and communication plan identifying key communication vehicles and events for existing and potential donors/partners. Provide regular briefings to the Provincial Board on the progress of the provincial Development team. Collaborate actively with internal teams to ensure appropriate representation of staff, scientists, clinicians, etc. at meetings or events. People Leadership Provide direction and support to a team of professionals to support business and development goals. Recruit, develop, and provide regular coaching and performance management for the Development team to effectively deliver on the plan. Ensure Development staff can speak confidently and compellingly about HSFC s strategic research and programs. Act as staff support for formal or ad hoc volunteer groups formed to support Development initiatives. Deliver excellent briefing and coordination through all stages of the donor/partner cycle. Provide subject matter expertise, coaching and advice to senior staff and volunteers. Operations, Business Planning, Central Database Recording & Moves Management Participate in an integrated moves management program and prospect clearance process. Ensure all outcomes from prospect, supporter, and volunteer contact are recorded in the database within 48 hours. Ensure the seamless collection and coordination of information for prospective donor advancement purposes. Take an active role in learning about and keeping up-to-date with the Foundation s priority funding opportunities. -5-

6 Leverage and collaborate with the Development Team Central on prospect research, information management, strategic writing, opportunity/proposal development, activation, recognition and stewardship; and adheres to all Development standards and protocols. Comply with all policies and practices at HSFC, including compliance with Code of Professional Conduct.
