After you apply, SSHRC sends your application to a committee of Canadian and international research experts. This committee will judge your application for academic excellence and importance and make funding recommendations to SSHRC. 5 ELIGIBILITY GRADUATE STUDENTS MASTER S Citizens or permanent residents of Canada who have completed or are about to complete a bachelor s degree in the humanities or social sciences, or who are already pursuing a first master s degree. DOCTORAL Citizens or permanent residents of Canada who have completed or are about to complete a master's degree in the humanities or social sciences, or who are already pursuing or are about to begin a first PhD or equivalent. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS Citizens or permanent residents of Canada who have recently completed or will soon complete a PhD or equivalent in the humanities or social sciences, and who do not hold a tenured or tenure-track faculty position. FACULTY Professors or researchers affiliated with Canadian postsecondary institutions. SSHRC does not require applicants for most grants to be citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Foreign researchers and researchers not affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution may be eligible to apply as co-applicants to selected SSHRC programs. Foreign researchers may also participate as research collaborators on any SSHRC-supported project.

10 01 BASIC RESEARCH STANDARD RESEARCH GRANTS (SRG) Application Deadline: October 15 each year. The SRG program supports investigator-driven, individual or small team research and research training in the social sciences and humanities. SRGs fund three-year programs of research with broadly stated objectives that comprise one or more projects. Value: Up to $100,000 annually, with a maximum of $250,000 over three years. Eligibility: Faculty, postdoctoral researchers. MAJOR COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH INITIATIVES (MCRI) Application Deadline: Letter of Intent: January 31 each year; Formal Application (by invitation only): September 1 each year. This program supports large-scale, collaborative research on broad issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance. MCRI research projects involve many scholars with different perspectives and expertise, and, where appropriate, include partnerships with private and public sector groups. The MCRI program is intended for leading scholars who demonstrate the skills necessary for managing a complex, interdisciplinary, multi-institutional project. Value: Letter of Intent: $20,000 (for developing the Formal Application); Grant: A minimum annual budget of $100,000, with a maximum budget of $2.5 million over seven years. Eligibility: Faculty. 4 Programs
11 SSHRC POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS Application Deadline: October 2, These fellowships support non-tenured PhD holders who are undertaking new research, publishing research findings, developing personal research networks, broadening teaching experience and preparing for national research competitions. Applicants must propose a significant and feasible program of postdoctoral research. Value: $38,000 annually for up to two years, plus a $5,000 accountable research allowance. Eligibility: Postdoctoral researchers who will have completed all requirements for a first doctorate no more than 36 months prior to the application deadline. Programs 5
12 02 STRATEGIC RESEARCH ABORIGINAL RESEARCH Application Deadline: See website ( This program funds research that supports and promotes Aboriginal leadership and participation; policy development related to Aboriginal communities; and increased awareness of the needs, values, knowledge, experiences and contributions of Aboriginal peoples. Applications are invited from teams that combine the knowledge and experience of Aboriginal communities with the knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and non-aboriginal researchers. Value: Development Grants: Up to $25,000 for up to two years; Research Grants: Up to $100,000 annually, with a maximum of $250,000 over three years. Eligibility: Faculty, postdoctoral researchers with university affiliation, researchers affiliated with community, Aboriginal and not-for-profit organizations. AILEEN D. ROSS FELLOWSHIP Application Deadline: As for Postdoctoral Fellowships or doctoral awards, as applicable. This fellowship is awarded to an outstanding Postdoctoral Fellowship or doctoral award holder who is conducting research in sociology in the area of poverty. Value: $10,000 in addition to the value of the Postdoctoral Fellowship or doctoral award. Eligibility: Postdoctoral researchers and graduate students successful in the Postdoctoral Fellowships or SSHRC doctoral awards competitions. 6 Programs
13 BORA LASKIN NATIONAL FELLOWSHIP IN HUMAN RIGHTS RESEARCH Application Deadline: October 2, This fellowship supports interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research in the field of human rights, with emphasis on Canadian human rights issues. Value: A $45,000 stipend plus $10,000 for research expenses and research-related travel expenses. Eligibility: Faculty. CANADIAN INITIATIVE ON SOCIAL STATISTICS (CISS) The CISS increases Canada s capacity to analyze social statistics in order to meet the rising demand for evidence-based decision-making in the private, public and voluntary sectors. CISS DATA TRAINING SCHOOLS Application Deadline: October every three years (2007, 2010, etc.). The Data Training Schools program enables universities to host short courses in quantitative methods for researchers, students, policy analysts and data librarians, including secure access to many unique Statistics Canada data sets. Value: Up to $50,000 annually for up to three years. Eligibility: Postsecondary institutions. CISS RESEARCH DATA CENTRES Application Deadline: Applications may be submitted at any time. This program gives individual researchers and research teams including students secure access to confidential longitudinal survey data collected by Statistics Canada. Each data centre functions as a secure Statistics Canada office and as a statistical-analysis computing laboratory. Each application is evaluated for viability and scholarly merit, as well as for demonstrated need for access to the data. Value: Access to the unique social data sets and technical expertise of what The Economist magazine has called the best statistical office in the world. Eligibility: Faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students and honours-level undergraduate students; researchers and prospective researchers in federal government departments and agencies. 14 COMMUNITY-UNIVERSITY RESEARCH ALLIANCES (CURA) Application Deadline: Letter of Intent: See website ( Formal Application (by invitation only): See website. Canadian communities face a complex array of challenges social, fiscal, commercial, cultural, organizational and ecological, among others. In the CURA program, universities and community organizations work together as equal partners to develop new understanding of crucial issues, sharpen research priorities, provide new research training opportunities and enhance the ability of social sciences and humanities research to meet the needs of Canadian communities. Value: Letter of Intent: Up to $20,000 (for developing the Formal Application); Grant: Up to $200,000 annually for up to five years. Eligibility: Postsecondary institutions, community and not-for-profit organizations. IMAGE, TEXT, SOUND AND TECHNOLOGY (ITST) Application Deadline: See website ( The ITST program aims at increasing researchers familiarity with, and effective use of, digital information technologies. Research Grants fund work on new applications of these technologies for the social sciences and humanities. Summer Institute Grants and Workshop Grants enable postsecondary institutions to offer instructional seminars and workshops. Conference Grants help institutions bring scholars together to present research methods and results. Value: Up to $50,000 over 12 months for all grant types. Eligibility: Faculty, postdoctoral researchers with university affiliation (Research Grants); postsecondary institutions (Summer Institute, Workshop and Conference grants). INFRASTRUCTURE CANADA PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH STUDIES This program, a collaboration between Infrastructure Canada, SSHRC and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), supports research on public infrastructure and communities issues. 15 INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND (IOF) Application Deadline: September 13, International collaboration in research is vital to access the global pool of knowledge; to develop comparative perspectives on key social, cultural and economic issues; and to pool knowledge and resources to address complex global problems. Accordingly, IOF grants help Canadian researchers develop activities that lead to significant international research collaboration. Value: Development Grants: Up to $25,000 for one year; Project Grants: Up to $75,000 for one year. Eligibility: Faculty, postdoctoral researchers with university affiliation. THE JULES AND GABRIELLE LÉGER FELLOWSHIP Application Deadline: October 2, This fellowship supports research on the historical and contemporary contribution of the Crown and its federal and provincial representatives to Canada s political, constitutional, cultural, intellectual and social life. Value: A $40,000 stipend plus $10,000 for research expenses. Eligibility: Faculty. THE METROPOLIS PROJECT Since 1995, SSHRC has supported this international forum for comparative research on population migration, cultural diversity and the challenges of integrating immigrants into cities. The project s goal is to improve policies for managing migration and cultural diversity in major cities. For detailed program information, see the Metropolis Canada website ( NORTHERN RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT Application Deadline: See website ( Northern research is defined as research that is carried out north of the southern limit of permafrost, or that is relevant to social, economic or cultural issues in the Canadian North. The program supports high-quality social sciences and humanities research in and about Canada s North that fosters involvement on the part of northern communities, opportunities for research training and better integration among northern research institutions, local community groups and government departments. 16 Value: Up to $40,000 over two years. Eligibility: Faculty, postdoctoral researchers with university affiliation, community and not-for-profit organizations. RESEARCH-CREATION GRANTS IN FINE ARTS Application Deadline: See website ( This program invites artist-researchers to apply for grants to support research-creation. Artist-researcher refers to faculty whose work involves conducting research, creating works of art and training students. Research-creation refers to research that fosters the creation of literary or artistic works, where both the research and the artistic works meet recognized standards of excellence. Eligible artistic disciplines include architecture, design, creative writing, visual arts, performing arts, film, video, performance art, interdisciplinary arts, and media and electronic arts. Value: Up to $250,000 over three years with a maximum of $100,000 in any one year. Eligibility: Faculty. RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES Application Deadline: April 9, 2007 and October 8, This program fosters research by supporting the development of new ways of analyzing, structuring, integrating and transferring knowledge. Specific objectives are to help researchers develop new research questions or proposals; explore conceptual and methodological perspectives and directions; and critically analyze research, including its achievements, impacts, strengths and state of development. Value: Up to $40,000 over two years. Eligibility: Faculty, community and not-for-profit organizations, postsecondary institutions, scholarly associations. SPORT PARTICIPATION RESEARCH INITIATIVE Application Deadline: See website ( This joint initiative with Sport Canada funds research that builds a better understanding of Canadians participation in sport, and informs programs and policies intended to promote and enhance sport in Canada. 10 Programs
17 Value: Research Grants: Up to $250,000 over three years; Postdoctoral Fellowship Supplements: Up to $10,000, in addition to the value of the Postdoctoral Fellowship; Doctoral Award Supplements: Up to $10,000, in addition to the value of the doctoral award. Eligibility: Faculty (Research Grants), graduate students (Doctoral Award Supplements), postdoctoral researchers (Postdoctoral Fellowship Supplements). STRATEGIC KNOWLEDGE CLUSTERS Application Deadline: See website ( This program builds on research supported through other SSHRC programs by supporting national and international networks of researchers in the social sciences and/or humanities that foster collaboration or otherwise contribute to a particular issue, theme or content area important to Canadian society, and in which Canadian researchers demonstrate strength. Such collaborative knowledge partnerships also extend the international role and impact of Canadian research and leverage external funding to support new research. Value: Up to $300,000 annually for up to seven years. Eligibility: Faculty. THÉRÈSE F.-CASGRAIN FELLOWSHIP Application Deadline: See website ( This fellowship, which SSHRC administers on behalf of the Thérèse F.-Casgrain Foundation, supports research on women and social change in Canada. Value: A $40,000 stipend, of which up to $10,000 may be used to cover research expenses and research-related travel expenses. Eligibility: Faculty. Programs 11
18 03 RESEARCH COMMUNICATION AID TO OPEN-ACCESS RESEARCH JOURNALS Application Deadline: June 30, This one-year, one-time-only program supports open-access, peer-reviewed journals published online and made available without charge. It offers grants to help defray production and distribution costs. Value: Up to $25,000. Eligibility: Scholarly associations. AID TO RESEARCH WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES IN CANADA Application Deadline: May 1 and November 1 each year. This program supports the communication of research within and between disciplines and among Canadian and international researchers. It offers grants to help defray the costs of organizing research workshops and conferences, including administrative expenses, travel and subsistence fees and the cost of publishing proceedings. Value: Workshop Grants: Up to $25,000; Conference Grants: Up to $20,000 (200 or fewer participants), or up to $35,000 (201 to 400 participants), or up to $50,000 (more than 400 participants). 19 AID TO SCHOLARLY PUBLICATIONS (ASPP) This program funds the publication of scholarship that makes an important contribution to knowledge in a particular field. 20 04 STUDENTS CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS (CGS) PROGRAM: MASTER S SCHOLARSHIPS Application Deadline: For applicants registered at a Canadian university, the university sets the date; for those who must apply directly to SSHRC, November 29, CGS Master s Scholarships help develop research skills and train highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high scholarly achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. Value: $17,500 for 12 months. Eligibility: Citizens or permanent residents of Canada registered in, or applying to, a first master s program in the social sciences or humanities that has a significant research component. Tenable only at recognized Canadian universities. See website ( for additional requirements. CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS (CGS) PROGRAM: DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIPS AND SSHRC DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS Application Deadline: For applicants registered at a Canadian university, the university sets the date; for all others, November 15, These awards help develop research skills and train highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate high scholarly achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies. A single application form is used to apply for both awards. Value: CGS Doctoral Scholarships: $35,000 annually for 36 months, tenable for the first-tothird or second-to-fourth years of doctoral study; SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships: $20,000 annually for up to the first four years of doctoral study. 14 Programs

CGS Doctoral Scholarships are tenable only at recognized Canadian universities; SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships are tenable at any recognized university in Canada or abroad, provided that the applicant has completed at least one degree at a Canadian university. Each year, SSHRC selects the Queen s Fellow from among its doctoral award recipients who are undertaking a program in Canadian studies at a Canadian university. Value: Tuition fees and travel allowances in addition to the value of the doctoral award. Eligibility: Graduate students successful in the SSHRC doctoral awards competition. SPORT PARTICIPATION RESEARCH INITIATIVE: DOCTORAL AWARD SUPPLEMENTS Application Deadline: As for the doctoral awards. This joint initiative with Sport Canada funds research that builds a better understanding of Canadians participation in sport and informs programs and policies intended to promote and enhance sport in Canada. 22 05 INSTITUTIONS AID TO SMALL UNIVERSITIES (ASU) Application Deadline: December 4, This program helps small Canadian universities develop their research capacity. For example, the program funds: research centres, doctoral students whose studies are related to the ASU grant, agenda-setting seminars, visiting scholars, colloquia and symposia and collaborative research or partnership development. Value: Up to $30,000 annually for three years. Eligibility: Postsecondary institutions. SSHRC INSTITUTIONAL GRANTS (SIG) Application Deadline: December 4, This program assists Canadian universities in improving research by helping new researchers become more competitive, supporting established researchers with modest funding requirements and supporting dissemination and collaboration. Institutions use these grants to support small-scale research projects in the social sciences and humanities. Value: Factors such as the number of eligible faculty members determine the amount of each award (minimum $5,000). Eligibility: Postsecondary institutions. 16 Programs
23 06 PRIZES SSHRC GOLD MEDAL FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN RESEARCH The Gold Medal, SSHRC s highest research honour, is valued at $100,000. It is awarded annually to an individual whose leadership, dedication and originality of thought have significantly advanced understanding in his or her field of research, enriched Canadian society and contributed to the country's cultural and intellectual life. SSHRC AURORA PRIZE The Aurora Prize, valued at $25,000, recognizes an outstanding new researcher who is building a reputation for exciting and original research in the social sciences or humanities. It is awarded each year to the top-ranked new scholar in SSHRC s Standard Research Grants competition. SSHRC POSTDOCTORAL PRIZE The $10,000 Postdoctoral Prize is awarded each year to the most outstanding SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship recipient. SSHRC WILLIAM E. TAYLOR FELLOWSHIP The $5,000 William E.
