4 36 HONG KONG GETTING AROUND With a well planned road system and comprehensive transportation networks stretching into every corner of the territory, Hong Kong is a tourist-friendly city without compare. AIRPORT EXPRESS When the new airport opened in 1998 on Lantau Island, many worried about distance between the city and the terminal. With the ever-reliable Airport Express, the time from Central takes just over 20 minutes, and from Kowloon and Tsing Yi, it s even quicker. MTR Hong Kong s Mass Transit Railway is the envy of the world. Frequent, fast and inexpensive, the underground is the best way to get around town or cross the harbour. You can also link up with the East and West Rail networks that operate in the New Territories and connects with China s rail system across the border. TRAMS They may not be the fastest but for just small change you can t beat the experience. Trams operate from the far west to the east of Hong Kong Island. Sitting on the top deck is one of the best ways of seeing the city.

5 HONG KONG 37 BUSES Above ground and at a slower pace, around-the-clock buses services give visitors the chance to get know this fascinating city better. The frequent and extensive routes serve the entire territory. PEAK TRAM Opened in the 1880s, this tram takes an impossibly steep route from Central to the Peak Tower, 400 metres above. The views are breathtaking. TAXIS If in doubt, jump in a cab. Relatively inexpensive, taxis whiz around town and are seemingly everywhere. TIPS FERRIES The Star Ferry is a must-try. One of the most famous routes in the world is across Victoria Harbour between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. A ferry system also operates between Central and many outlying islands such as Cheung Chau, Lamma and Lantau. The Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan and Kowloon s China Ferry Terminal also operate ferries to Macau and China. CRUISING Hong Kong is also a popular stop-off for many of the world s cruise operators. The government has recently announced plans for the old airport site of Kai Tak. Hong Kong seeks to complement its existing facilities and build its first berth for large cruise ships by mid-2013 and terminal facilities one or two years later. We expect to launch tailor-made packages to reflect this exciting new development. OCTOPUS CARD An Octopus card enables passengers to doot their way around town. The stored-value pass is the easiest and most widely used way of navigating the city s transport network without carrying small change or buying individual tickets. Even outside the transport network, Octopus cards can even be used instead of cash or credit cards in many shops and restaurants.
