1 Section 14: Middle School and Upper School Uniform Guidelines The use of uniforms has several significant benefits. Wearing uniforms allows students to look like students, promote a mindset of school being a special place with special expectations, and develop school pride. In addition, uniforms avoid the need for a dress code, eliminate "dress competition," and present financial savings. Dress or casual uniforms are worn every school day unless otherwise designated for special events. Student clothing should be appropriate for the academic environment; neat, clean, and polished in overall appearance. General Information and Guidelines Piercing is allowed for ladies only, and only in the ears Hair should be conservative style/color and not cover eyes No visible tattoos Hats, hoods, and sunglasses are for outside the building All logo-wear, Middle School P.E. uniforms, and optional Grizzlies sweatshirts must be purchased from an authorized (see for lists, ordering information, and links to websites) All other uniform items may be purchased through any store 14.1 Middle School Ladies Uniform MS Ladies Dress Uniform: Knit polo shirt that is white, navy blue, or forest green (no stripes); may be long- or shortsleeved Shirt must be long enough to cover midriff with arms raised White or gray undershirts may be worn underneath shirts; undershirts must be plain, Sweater: Navy or dark green sweater (monogrammed with Bear Creek logo); may be cardigan, crew Sequoia plaid skirt; must be purchased from the authorized Light tan khaki skirt; may be chino or corduroy Skirt should be knee length Side slits or vents may be above the knee to allow for movement, but should be two inches or less above the knee; no front slit is allowed above the knee Plaid skirt may be worn with a Bear Creek navy or dark green sweater Dress shoes are to be worn and should blend and enhance the formal look of the dress uniform standard No athletic-style shoes, flip flops, slippers, or Ugg-style boots on dress days Flesh-tone nylons or tights that match the uniform color (no fishnet) Knee high or ankle socks that are brown, white, khaki or match sweater Patterns or argyle socks in school colors only revised December 2012 Contents of this handbook in whole or in part are subject to change without notice. 72

2 No leg warmers or leggings may be worn Ladies may wear a belt, but are not required to do so MS Ladies Casual Uniform: See dress uniform shirt guidelines FRIDAYS ONLY: Students may wear a Bear Creek spirit shirt that has been approved in advance by the Division Head Optional Hooded Sweatshirt: Bear Creek Grizzlies hooded green sweatshirt Note: Two sweatshirts are available: the green hooded sweatshirt is an approved "casual day" uniform item for school and classroom. The gray crew neck sweatshirt is an optional item for P.E. class only If a student plans to take her green sweatshirt off during the day, the student must wear a uniform shirt Light tan khaki slacks, cargos, or capris Walking Shorts/Skorts: Must have at least a 5-inch inseam. 6 Sweater: Navy or dark green sweater (monogrammed with Bear Creek logo), may be cardigan, crew Blazer and Tie: Gentlemen may wear a navy blazer with a necktie in solid school colors (gold or forest green) or with a Bear Creek necktie instead of the sweater or sweater vest (see accessories for details); seniors are encouraged to wear a blazer and tie as a show of leadership and tradition in the Upper School Light tan khaki slacks-style (no jeans-style or cargo) Corduroy or chino Dress shoes are to be worn and should blend and enhance the overall formal look of the dress uniform standard No athletic-style, flip flops, or slippers on dress days Socks: Gentlemen should wear dress socks, not white athletic, gym-style socks Gentlemen must wear a belt. Belt should be leather (black, brown, dark green, or navy) 14.5 Middle School and Upper School Free Dress Days Sometimes free dress is announced for either or both the Middle School and Upper School. On Bear Creek free dress days, students are expected to dress appropriately and modestly. Clothing must be clean and pants should be free of rips and tears. Skirt and dress hems should not be higher than knee length.
