MU BSC 227 Laboratory Guide available only at Marshall Bookstore. Other Materials: Blackboard (MU Online) will be used to distribute lecture slides, supplementary material or exercises, study aids, additional material you may find interesting, and possibly short quizzes. Lecture notes or study guides will not be provided. Computer Requirements: Access to and the ability to print documents from Blackboard is required. I may also post announcements on Blackboard or you may receive notices to your Marshall account, you are expected to check both regularly. Any course communication must be through your Marshall account (not gmail, yahoo, blackboard mail, twitter, IM, etc). Course Description: Principles of gross and microscopic anatomy of human body systems and their development. Open to candidates in BSN program. Does not count towards a major in Biological Science. 4 credit hours. Prerequisites: ACT composite 19 or higher or 12 hrs. college credit, 100 level or above with minimum GPA of 2.3. Human Anatomy is the study of the cells, tissues, organs and systems that make up the human body. This course is a systematic and integrated examination of the human body at these different organizational levels and will provide the anatomical knowledge that serves as the foundation for the study of human physiology. General Concepts: Lectures are organized loosely around material presented in the textbook, but additional material will also be included. Certain topics will be emphasized and, on occasion, points in the textbook will be argued. Exams are based on material presented in lectures and EVERYTHING presented in lectures is examinable. The textbook readings are intended to help you learn material presented in the lectures, by presenting it in a different and often more comprehensive format. Occasional specific readings from the textbook will be examinable; these will be outlined in lectures. Conduct: Everyone is expected to act in a professional and courteous manner. Disruptive, abusive, or offensive behavior directed at anyone involved in the class will not be tolerated, and offenders may be asked to leave the classroom and forfeit any associated grades. Cell phones and other communication devices should be turned off or set to silent ring. If you absolutely must answer a phone call, quietly leave the class before doing so. Text messaging is not allowed. Use of computers, personal electronic devices and tape recorders is not allowed, unless their use is directly involved with class activities and has been approved by the instructor. If you are late, enter quietly and avoid disturbing the class. I welcome you to contact me via any time, however, please maintain a professional style in your correspondence with me. I will not answer s that are unprofessional, impolite or written with text message abbreviations.

2 Goals: Most of the students who take this course are interested in a career in public health. As such, I feel it is important for me to give you the opportunity to begin to develop those skills necessary for pursuing a career in this field. As such, in this course we will strive to do the following: -to provide the material necessary for a thorough understanding of human anatomy. -to provide the opportunity to develop your ability to integrate information and think about it critically, analytically, and conceptually. -to provide the opportunity to apply your knowledge towards integrating knowledge of anatomy with understanding of physiology. -to provide the opportunity for you to study human anatomy with an emphasis on your particular interests. Expected Learning Outcomes: I have expectations of you in terms of the knowledge and abilities you will develop over this course. In this course we provide you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills. We will go beyond simple memorization of facts, and ask that you learn the material. However, you are the one paying to take this course, you are the one who will be competing for placement in professional programs or jobs, you are the one who knows where your interests lie and what particular knowledge you need to pursue your chosen career. It is up to you to participate, to ask questions, to study, and to come to lecture or lab prepared. In aid of this, I will open the floor at the beginning of each class to questions or comments, and I will ask questions of you. I anticipate that as the course progresses, you will develop and refine the ability to: -describe anatomical structures at the different organizational levels. -identify and describe components of human anatomy, and integrate them into a complete view of the human body. -integrate knowledge from different parts of the course and infer how anatomical systems relate to one another structurally and spatially within the context of the human body. - recognize anatomical structures discussed in lecture on models and images provided in lab. -critically evaluate information and data, and form conclusions based on your evaluations. Assessment: Written exams and quizzes are a necessary means of evaluating how well students have met course expectations. The exams will be a mixture of multiple choice, fill in the blanks, matching, true false, and short and long answer. Questions will be written so as to test your preparation at every level, from memorization of facts to application of conceptual knowledge. I expect that you will be prepared to answer questions in the lecture and laboratory, and with this in mind short unannounced quizzes will be given. These should benefit your final scores as they help you to develop good study skills by keeping up with the material in the lecture and laboratory. Ability to identify specific anatomical structures will be assessed by midterm and final laboratory practical exams. The laboratory final is NOT cumulative.

3 Grading Policy: Your grade will be based on your scores on a number of short unscheduled quizzes in the lecture and/ or over Blackboard, three lecture exams, a final exam and the laboratory practical exams. The first lecture exam is divided into two parts as an aid to studying; each part of exam 1 is worth 50 points. I round up if your score is X.5 to X.9. I do not give extra credit or bonus points. Unexcused absences from lab will result in a subtraction of 1% from your final grade per lab session missed. Attendance: I do not take official attendance in the lectures, but my exams are based on material I present in class. The textbook is a valuable aid to understanding, but material in the lectures may go beyond the scope of the text. Concepts and knowledge in this course build upon one another and I use many examples relating different aspects of anatomy to one another, therefore it is very easy to fall behind and difficult to catch up. Missed exams can be made up only in the case of a University approved absence, a University closure or a Hurricane High School closure. Marshall's policy on excused absences can be found in the academic calendar. It is your responsibility to be familiar with University policy. Policies and the excused absence form can be found at these addresses: In case of university or hurricane high school closure on an exam day, the exam will be rescheduled and you will be notified via and Blackboard announcement. Hurricane high school closures are usually posted at In case of a University approved absence for a sporting event or other University sanctioned activity, arrangements to make up the exam must be made BEFORE the day of the exam. Failure to do this will result in the make up exam being completely long answer format. Attendance WILL be taken in the laboratories. Lab exercises cannot be set up at times other than the scheduled period. In addition, if you miss a lab, you 1% will be subtracted from your final grade for each lab missed. Missed quizzes cannot be made up, but they will not be counted if the absence is excused. If you must miss a lab and expect to obtain an approved absence you must notify me via or telephone message BEFORE the lab in question.

4 Academic Honesty: I take honesty and integrity very seriously, and will not tolerate any form of dishonest conduct. You are responsible for knowing the University's policies on academic honesty, which can be found in the student handbook or on the web at this location: Academic_Dishonesty_Policy.pdf During exams, I will expect you to NOT look at the work of those sitting around you, or have any type or form of course related material in view. Lab activities will be done in groups and discussion is encouraged. Because of the active nature of the laboratory exams, I expect that you will take extra care with academic honesty at these times. Any incidence of dishonest conduct will result in a grade of ZERO for that test or assignment, and possible failure or dismissal from the course. Every case will also be referred to Academic Affairs for further action. Students found guilty of academic dishonesty may be placed on academic probation, suspended, or dismissed from the University. For more information, please visit or contact Disabled Student Services Office at Prichard Hall 11, phone Study Habits: This course will cover a great deal of material in a short time, and the exams will be comprehensive both in the scope of material covered and in the ways in which you will be asked to demonstrate how well you have learned the material. Many of you may find this somewhat difficult, as cramming and memorizing from lecture handouts just before an exam tends not to result in good exam scores. You will want to develop good study habits. Among these are coming to class prepared, and taking good notes. Study often; it is best to review material every day, and to rewrite your notes. Ask questions in class. Use the textbook to help fill in gaps in your understanding as they arise. Find study habits that work for you. There are a few general rules (avoid distractions and stress, don't leave it to the last second), but aside from this, different people respond very differently to different environments. 5 SUGGESTIONS FOR SUCCESS 1. You are now in college, preparing for a professional degree or degree program. The most important thing I can teach you is to TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR EDUCATION. If you can learn how to do this, the skills will serve you well in the future. 2. Schedule a minimum of 2 hours study time for each hour in the classroom or lab. The first question you should always ask yourself is: What are the important points of this lecture and associated reading? List five. Make a list. Build your study strategy around it. 3. Read before lecture and labs. Listen and take notes. Print out lecture slides and use them as study guides. Material that I stress in lecture WILL be on the exam. Material in the reading that I do not mention MAY be on the exam, but will not be stressed. 4. Review after EVERY session (this class covers a lot of material - you cannot memorize and understand it all in 1-2 days of studying just before the test). Read for understanding. Condense and organize notes from lectures and reading. Determine key words and concepts. 5. Practice recalling from memory. Draw structures, pathways, and relationships. Practice writing down and saying terms. 6. If you LEARN the new material day by day (not just the might before the exam) and practice recall then you will find it easier to listen, take notes, read, and take exams. 7. Study smart!!! It is not just the amount of time, but how you spend your study time. Study away from the TV, music, or other distractions. Forming a study group is an excellent idea. Cooperate and graduate!! HELP If you are having trouble or not doing as well as you want to (or need to) come talk or me!
