1 Anti-Bullying Policy Scope This policy applies to all staff, governors, pupils and parents at the New Islington Free School irrespective of their age and whether or not a pupil is in the care of the School when/if bullying behaviour occurs. It should be read alongside the School's policy on Behaviour and Discipline, and the School Rules. Publication This policy will be made available to all parents and pupils via the School's website and is also available on request from the School Bursar. It is also available to all members of staff via the staff intranet. Statutory duty of schools Head teachers have a legal duty under the Education and Inspections Act 2006 to draw up procedures to prevent bullying among pupils and to bring these procedures to the attention of staff, parents and pupils. Aims We are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our pupils so they can learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at New Islington Free School. Through the operation of this policy, we aim to: Ensure that the School s measures designed to prevent bullying have regard to DfE Guidance Safe to Learn: Embedding Anti-Bullying Work in Schools; Maintain and drive a positive, supportive and caring culture among all pupils and staff throughout the School; and Deter bullying behaviour, detect it when it occurs, and deal with it promptly and firmly by counselling and/or disciplinary sanctions in accordance with school behaviour policies. What Is Bullying? Bullying is behaviour which hurts or causes distress by taking unfair advantage of another person in some way, making the victim feel uncomfortable or threatened, usually repeated over a period of time, where it is difficult for those who are being bullied to defend themselves. An isolated incident, where another child is hurt with malicious intent may also be regarded as bullying.

2 Not all bullying is deliberate or intended to hurt. Some individuals may see their hurtful conduct as teasing or a game or for the good of the other person. Whilst these forms of bullying are equally unacceptable, they may not be malicious and, as a result, can be often corrected quickly with advice and without disciplinary sanctions. However, it should be understood that a bully who does not respond appropriately to advice or sanctions will ultimately have to leave the School. Bullying can be: Emotional - being unfriendly, excluding, tormenting (e.g. hiding books, threatening gestures) Physical - pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence identified under the Malicious Communications Act This it can include: o Racist racial taunts, graffiti, gestures o Sexually unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments o Homophobic because of, or focussing on the issue of sexuality o Verbal name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing Cyber - the School has an Acceptable Use Policy which deals with cyber bullying. This can be defined as the deliberate use of information and communications technology (ICT), for example: o Mobile phone threats by text messaging and calls. o Misuse of associated technology i.e. camera and video facilities. o All areas of internet misuse e.g. and internet chat rooms. Equally, the act of bullying may not be related to any obvious cause at all. Principles Bullying behaviour is always unacceptable as no one deserves to be a victim of bullying and everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Pupils who are bullying need to learn different ways of behaving. Bullying will not be tolerated at the School for three key reasons: It is harmful to the person who is bullied, those who engage in bullying behaviour and those who support them. It can, in some cases, lead to lasting psychological damage and even suicide; It interferes with a pupil's right to enjoy his/her learning and leisure time free from intimidation; and It is contrary to all our aims and values, our internal culture and the reputation of the School.

3 It is everyone's responsibility to ensure, whatever the circumstances, that no-one becomes a victim of bullying. A pupil may be vulnerable to bullying because of their age, physical appearance, nationality, colour, sexual orientation, religion, culture or disability, or because they are new in the School, appear to be uncertain or to lack friends. However, there may not be an obvious reason why the victim has been targeted. Objectives of this Policy All governors, teaching and non-teaching staff should know what the New Islington Free School policy is on bullying and follow it when bullying is reported. All pupils and parents should know what the New Islington Free School policy is on bullying and what they should do if bullying arises. As a school we take bullying seriously. Pupils and parents should be assured that they will be supported when bullying is reported. Bullying will not be tolerated. Signs and Symptoms A child may indicate by signs or behaviour that he or she is being bullied. Adults should be aware of these possible signs and that they should investigate if a child: becomes withdrawn, anxious, or lacking in confidence feels ill in the morning begins to do poorly with school work comes home with clothes torn or books damaged has unexplained cuts or bruises becomes aggressive, disruptive or unreasonable is bullying other children or siblings stops eating is frightened to say what's wrong is afraid to use the internet or mobile phone is nervous & jumpy when a cyber-message is received gives improbable excuses for any of the above These signs and behaviours could indicate other problems, but bullying should be considered a possibility and should be investigated. Procedures 1. Parents or children should report bullying incidents to the class teacher. These will be investigated and appropriate action taken. (See outcomes) 2. In cases of repeated bullying, the incidents will be recorded by the Headteacher who will keep all parties informed about any action undertaken.

4 3. The bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and the bullying stopped quickly. 4. An attempt will be made to help the bully (bullies) change their behaviour. Parental support will be expected at this stage. 5. Where appropriate, parents will be informed and will be asked to come in to a meeting to discuss the problem. 6. If necessary and appropriate, police will be consulted. Outcomes 1. Any reported bullying will be investigated by the class teacher or teaching assistant. 2. The bully (bullies) will be asked to genuinely apologise, either verbally or in writing, and a record kept. 3. If possible, the pupils will be reconciled. 4. After the incident / incidents have been investigated and dealt with, each case will be monitored to ensure repeated bullying does not take place. 5. Staff will use appropriate questions to those involved in bullying to discuss what happened, discover why the pupil became involved as well as establishing the wrong doing and identifying the need to change. 6. Possible sanctions would include the missing of a playtime or receiving a minus house point, as described within the behaviour and discipline policy. Prevention Parents who are concerned that their child might be being bullied, or who suspect that their child may be the perpetrator of bullying, should contact their child s class teacher immediately. At New Islington Free School, we use a variety of methods for helping children to prevent bullying. As and when appropriate, these may include: School council developing the school code of conduct Assemblies Anti-bullying discussions and role-play during PSHE lessons Anti-bullying poster competitions Writing anti-bullying stories, poems or drawing pictures Support There will be various levels of support for all parties involved. This may include: Monitoring of behaviour and rewards. Creation of an IBP (Individual Behaviour plans). Individual discussions which may involve support for the victim of the bullying, and sanctions for the child who has carried out the bullying.

5 Support from external services, which may result in a programme of appropriate strategies to help this child cope with situations. Support for Parents Parents have a responsibility to support the school s anti-bullying policy and to actively encourage their child to be a positive member of the school. We spend time talking to the parents of the child who has bullied: we explain why the actions of the child were wrong, and explain how we will endeavour to help the child change their behaviour in future. Anti-bullying will be reviewed by the whole school community. Governors The governing body supports the Headteacher in all attempts to eliminate bullying from the school. The governing body will not condone any bullying at all and any incidents of bullying that do occur will be taken seriously and dealt with appropriately. The governing body monitors incidents that do occur and reviews the effectiveness of this policy regularly. The governors require the Headteacher to keep accurate records of all incidents of bullying and to report the governors on request about the effectiveness of school anti-bullying strategies. A parent who is dissatisfied with the way the school has dealt with a bullying incident can ask the chair of governors to look at the matter. In all cases, the governing body notifies the Headteacher and asks them to conduct an investigation into the case and to report back to a representative of the governing body. Monitoring, evaluation and review The policy will be promoted and implemented throughout the school. The school will review this policy annually and assess its implementation and effectiveness.
