We absolutely reject any form of deliberate behaviour by individuals or groups, which would make any of us frightened, hurt, distressed or unhappy. Creating a safe and pleasant environment is everybody s responsibility and these rights must be safeguarded by us all. All reported instances of bullying will be taken seriously and acted upon. Statement of Intent We are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our pupils so that they can learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our academy. If bullying does occur all students should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a TELLING academy. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the staff. What Is Bullying? Bullying is deliberately hurtful behaviour by an individual or group towards another individual or group, whether physical or psychological. Bullying is the singling out of a child for victimization or negative treatment that is repeated over a period of time. It involves an unfair balance of power, which makes it hard for the bullied child to defend his or herself. Bullying is not a single event. Bullying is systematically destroying self-esteem or deliberately isolating the child from their friends. Even when a student has been at the brunt of bullying behavior which is unpleasant and can be hurtful this is not bullying. Aims To demonstrate that Dorcan Academy takes bullying seriously and that it will not be tolerated; To take measures to prevent all forms of bullying in the Academy and during off-site activities; To support everyone in taking action to identify and protect those who might be bullied; To demonstrate to all that the safety and happiness of students is enhanced by dealing positively with bullying;
2 Page 2 of 5 To promote an environment where it is not an offence to tell someone about bullying; Bullying can be: Emotional Being unfriendly, excluding and tormenting (e.g. hiding books, threatening gestures). Physical Pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence. Racist Racial taunts, graffiti, gestures. Sexual Unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments. Homophobic Because of, or focussing on the issue of sexuality. Verbal Name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing. Cyber All areas of internet,such as & internet chat room misuse Mobile threats by text messaging & calls Misuse of associated technology, i.e. camera &video facilities Why is it Important to Respond to Bullying? Bullying hurts. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Students who are bullying need to learn different ways of behaving. The Academy has a responsibility to respond promptly and effectively to issues of bullying. Objectives of this Policy Procedures All governors, teaching and non-teaching staff, students and parents should have an understanding of what bullying is. All governors and teaching and non-teaching staff should know what the Academy policy is on bullying, and follow it when bullying is reported. All students and parents should know what the Academy policy is on bullying and what they should do if bullying arises. As an academy we take bullying seriously. Students and parents should be assured that they will be supported when bullying is reported. Bullying will not be tolerated by the Academy. 1. Report bullying incidents to staff 2. In cases of serious bullying the incidents will be recorded by staff 3. In serious cases parents will be informed and invited into school to discuss the problem 4. If necessary, and appropriate, police will be consulted. 5. The bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and the bullying stopped quickly. 6. All Bullying incidents will also be recorded and logged on the school system by Heads of Years.
3 Page 3 of 5 Outcomes 1. The Head of Year or Tutor will use the No Blame Approach for the initial meeting with the students involved. 2. After the incident(s) have been investigated and dealt with, each case will be monitored to ensure repeated bullying does not take place. 3. In all situations a suitable sanction will be applied as outlined in the Dorcan Academy Behaviour Poicy. Prevention We will use a variety of different interventions in order to prevent students from bullying. These may include: Assemblies that provide information on bullying Tutor work on anti-bullying Working with Tutor and Mentor Working with Year Leader Signing a Behaviour Contract Having discussions and activities about bullying and why it matters in PSHE lessons. Students will participate in events during Anti-bullying week designed to highlight the antibullying message around the Academy and local community. Students will be advised to use the Beat the Bully Ladder, outlined below: STEP ONE Try to ignore the bullying behaviour (remember bullying is name calling or physical bullying repeated over time, behaviour that makes you feel uncomfortable) Talk to other children. STEP TWO No-one needs to put up with bullying, so if ignoring the behaviour has not worked the next step is to try and discuss your concerns with the person who is making you feel uncomfortable (you do not need to do this on your own). STEP THREE If the bullying continues after steps 1 and 2 then you must tell someone ask a friend for help, tell your parents, or ask your form tutor for advice (you can use the bullying alert note). STEP FOUR If the bullying continues then do not give up you must report it again to your parents, your tutor, your Year Leader or a responsible adult. They cannot help if you don t let them know that it has not stopped (remember the bullying must stop and it will if you talk to others). STEP FIVE Sometimes bullies will not stop after their first warning but you must not give up. Go and see your Year Leader and share your experience on the ladder and they will help you. Keep your parents up to date.
4 Page 4 of 5 STEP SIX Your Year Leader will continue to help you to beat the bully suggesting strategies and giving the bully a final warning but you must continue to tell about the bullying (use a bullying diary to record your thoughts). STEP SEVEN If the bullying ladder has not worked yet you must continue to climb the different steps. Now it is time to let a Senior Teacher know about the bullying. Remember keep climbing and keep talking. STEP EIGHT It is very important to return to see the teacher that you saw on Step 7 of the ladder for more help at this step of the ladder this will mean that the Head Teacher will take further action to stop the bullying. STEP NINE Even when you get to step nine and the bullying has stopped you must keep talking. Tell your family and your teachers how you feel and if you are ever bullied again, then tell someone and beat the bully. The duty is now to ensure that safeguarding permeates all activity and functions.
