1 Dear Applicant September 2016 ICT/Computer Science Teacher - MPS (including London Fringe) Thank you for showing an interest in this position. Birchwood is a successful mixed Converter Academy with over 1450 students accommodated in excellent facilities. Our students not only leave with strong academic qualifications but also as well rounded individuals with a sense of responsibility and a willingness to contribute to both the economy and society in general. We are rightly proud of our comprehensive ethos and inclusive philosophy which enables us to balance support of academically gifted students who go on to achieve top grades at A-Level and GCSE, with students who need more help and guidance in a caring and supportive learning environment. As a result, all students who leave us go on to further education - with record numbers to Russell Group Universities, to apprenticeships or a chosen career with no one contributing to the government s 'not in education or employment' statistics. At GCSE, our examination results are consistently well above the national average for the 5+ A*-C including English and Maths at GCSE and nearly 80% made expected progress in English and Maths. As a truly comprehensive school, taking children of all ability from the local area, our intake reflects the national average so to achieve above the national average at GCSE is something we are pleased with and intend to build upon for the future. Beyond GCSEs, many of our Year 11 students stay on into our Sixth Form where they study predominantly A- Level subjects with the intention to apply for a place at university. We have approximately 300 students in our Sixth Form allowing us to offer more than 35 different subjects at Advanced Level. In 2016, all our students passed their A-Levels, with a tremendously high 61% achieving A*-B grades (well above the national average of 48%). All our students got into their first choice University. On the back of record numbers of applications for places at Birchwood High School, along with our good GCSE and A-level results this summer, our most recent Ofsted report (July 2015) picks out the following strengths: Parents, students and staff all display very high confidence in the behaviour of students. They are polite, welcoming and supportive of each other. Students take care around the site and wear their uniform with pride. Students feel safe; bullying is rare and is dealt with effectively. Sixth form students set an example to the school with their outstanding behaviour and attendance. The sixth form is good and improving rapidly. The Headteacher leads the school with energy, ambition and vision. Under his leadership Birchwood High School has improved substantially and is now heavily over-subscribed and growing. The overwhelming majority of parents who responded to the Parent View survey felt that the school was well led and managed and that they would recommend the school to others. The excellent facilities are well maintained and resources are managed effectively. Regarding admissions, in September 2016 we had 240 students enrol into Year 7 and are over-subscribed. Our admission criteria is simple and transparent priority is given to siblings and families living in and around the Bishop's Stortford area. As an employer, we have a fantastic team of almost 200 staff. Each person is a valued professional contributing to practice and improvements at our school. There is an atmosphere of professionalism and a sense of team with great attention given to personalised CPD and Performance Management. In addition staff have access to a wide range of benefits, which are listed on the recruitment area of our website. Staff turnover sits below the national average and the school is fully staffed at present. The most frequent reason for teachers to move on is for promotion.

3 Job Description Classroom Teacher The Classroom Teacher will be primarily responsible for establishing and supporting learning within their classroom across the age range. Major responsibilities: Quality of Learning To check that their lessons are planned in accordance with the schemes of work for each course. To be aware of the prior learning and special needs of their students. Set high expectations for the achievement of their students. Implement the school s policies for marking, assessment, setting, target setting, recording and reporting. To aim that progression and continuity are achieved across the key stage and between the key stages, as set out by the schemes of work they are supplied with. Ethos and Environment To deal in the first instance, with behavioural issues in the classroom, seeking support where necessary in line with the school s behaviour management policy. To adopt a consistent ethos in line with Birchwood High School s Code of Practice. To monitor that the quality of appearance and order of their teaching area is of a high standard. To adhere to health and safety procedures. Staff Development To participate in staff development activities To take opportunities to develop their own skills and understanding in relation to their role Whole School (on a voluntary basis) To participate in discussions regarding wider school issues, and involvement in working groups where appropriate. Other Activities To promote the general progress and well-being of individual students and of any class assigned. To communicate and consult with parents of students. To participate in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above. To undertake any other duties as negotiated with the Headteacher.

5 Birchwood High School Technology Faculty The Technology Faculty The Technology faculty is a strong, friendly and supportive team of 13 teachers and three support staff, who work closely together. Within the faculty, there are twelve specialist rooms, a fully fitted large workshop with room for two classes in the practical area. Many of the technology rooms also have fully networked computers. Technology is structured to include the subject areas of Business, and Information & Creative Technologies (ICT). The Technology Curriculum At KS3, Technology is taught through a carousel system. Students receive six lessons a fortnight, taught in mixed ability groups. The subjects taught include Food Technology, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Textiles, ICT and Product Design. Students start their KS4 courses in year 9. Technology and all its subjects are optional but such are their popularity that large numbers of students usually choose at least one of the many subjects that are available. Subjects offered at GCSE are Food Preparation and Nutrition, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Textiles. In addition three BTEC courses are offered in Business, Construction and ICT. Business and ICT have recently changed to BTEC courses with its emphasis on discrete units of study, as we believe this offers scope for creative teaching and achievement at all levels. At KS5 we offer successful courses both at AS/A2 and in BTEC s. In the AS/A2 courses in Graphics and Resistant Materials, students receive eight hours of A-level delivery per fortnight. In addition Level 3 BTECs in Business, Health and Social Care, and also ICT are offered in the Sixth Form. The Technology Faculty is pro-active in its use of ICT as this is a major part of the Technology curriculum. ProDesktop, 2D design and a Nutritional Analysis programme are used extensively. The faculty is strongly supported by the Senior Leadership Team and have two laser cutters for the faculty, which has helped students introduce more CAD/CAM into their designs. Extra-Curricular Clubs We run a number of popular activities and weekly after-school clubs including Young Chambers. We encourage our students to take part in a number of competitions; Birchwood collaborates closely with the Bishop s Stortford Rotary club to host and enter teams in the annual Young Technicians competition and the Young Chef of the Year competition, where our students have been winners on many occasions. Technology also provides support and training to Primary schools primary schools use our facilities and our staff have reciprocated by visiting primary schools to train and support their staff with teaching Technology at their own school.
