1 FAUQUIER HIGH SCHOOL Mission Statement The mission of Fauquier High School is to provide instruction which will enable students to live productively in society. FROM THE PRINCIPAL S MAILBOX: Fauquier High School Community: Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our school. We want to communicate with every member of our school community as best we can. This newsletter is just one way that we try to do that. If you have a question or concern please feel free to contact us. We are here to help you. I thank all of you who have made the time to come to any of the events that we have had this year. Whether it be to learn more about our school at Back to School Night or to support one of our athletic teams, the turnout and enthusiasm for Fauquier High School has been overwhelming. As we look forward to fall, there are many events to come. The events include but are not limited to: Spirit Week and Homecoming, more athletic contest, band competitions, club activities and theatre presentations to name just a few. It will be an exciting time for all involved. Speaking of involvement, the more all of us are involved the better our school becomes. Students who are involved have better grades and attendance. Parents who participate feel more connected to the school and their community. There are so many opportunities as mentioned above and even more that are not. If you have any questions or concerns with your student s progress please contact your son or daughter s teacher. We can improve student performance by working together; students, teachers and parents. In closing, I am very thankful for the people who make up The Fauquier High School Community. Eligible Juniors and Seniors have already received information about membership criteria. Members are participating in A+ tutoring. For more information contact Dr. William Wilson. Members are providing one-on-one services including reading and crafts with the MD class during A+ time. Working with Youth Award The Town of Warrenton for the Student Postcard Project: Fauquier High School students participated in Warrenton s 25 Year Comprehensive Plan by creating a pair of postcards that show what they like about Warrenton and what they would like to see in Warrenton in 25 years. We participated in this postcard project last spring and were notified that we won an AWARD for participating, More about the program is as follows: Warrenton s Student Postcard Project was based on the simple principle that students of today are the community leaders of tomorrow. Through the project, the town meaningfully engaged children from kindergarten through high school in planning for its future as part of the public input process for its comprehensive plan. In civics, art and English classes, students were asked to identify their favorite places in town and what they hoped their town could be like in 25 years. More than 1,000 students contributed to a stunning display. The project succeeded in educating the next generation about their role in local government and gave them a voice in planning for its future. 2

3 FHS Library News: Link your Grocery Store Cards to FHS The FHS library sponsors two local grocery stores (Giant, and Harris Teeter) savings card programs to earn money for our school. Please link your savings cards to FHS so we can purchase new AV equipment. Simply go to the library webpage and open the link on the left called Helpful Links. The library webpage url is The first Virginia Readers Choice Brown Bag Book Club meeting will be held on Friday, September 30 during all lunch shifts. All are welcome to bring their lunch that day to the library conference room to join in our lively book discussions. Subsequent Brown Bag Book Club meetings are held the final Friday of each month. Desserts will be provided! See a library staff member to join. Open Mic Poetry is happening in the library! Join us the third Thursday of every month during Homeroom to read original poetry, or just come and join the audience. Free hot chocolate and donuts are served. Sign up in the library. Recycle your used Ink and Toner cartridges in the library. Make money for our library and help the environment! Win. Win. Need reliable resources for research? The library and FCPS subscribe to a variety databases for academic research. Access the databases through our website: fhslibrary. Follow us to hear all about the exciting activities in our TEXTBOOK INFORMATION: Students were issued one or more textbooks for the Fall term utilizing a computerized barcode system. All students were encouraged to write their names in those books. Student on occasion pick up the wrong textbook from a classroom or the cafeteria not the one issued to them. They use it and turn it in at the end of the term. THAT book that is not THEIR book the one issued to them. If the other student who then had the wrong book does not turn in the book, the first student will have to pay the replacement cost of the textbook. Textbooks are expensive and consume a large portion of the school budget. Do not allow a lost textbook replacement cost become a portion of YOUR budget. 3
