1 Using the GLIFOS Modules GLIFOS Social Media runs on a wiki platform (like Wikipedia) and is useful for attaching textual records, photographic images, and artifacts to an audio or video component. Labeled below are common terms that will be used throughout the instructions. The instructions have been laid out in a format to answer questions that are commonly asked. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Library s education specialist at Bush43Education@nara.gov. Category Link itexts Video Marker Metadata Context Paragraph Can I share part of a video? Yes! If you use the controls in the Video Marker, you can select specific begin and end points within the video that you would like to share. In the example below, 56 seconds to 2 minutes and 10 seconds was marked (indicated by an orange bar). Once the selection has been marked, you can also use the Mail Video Segment function to a link to that portion of the video. The best part about ing a link is that if the person you are sharing the clip with WANTS to watch the entire video, they can it simply allows you to mark a section you found interesting. When you share a link, the module still has full functionality. This means all of the itexts, metadata, and context paragraphs will be there, allowing those who want to learn more to do so. George W. 2 What context is provided for the records included in the modules? There are three sections in the modules that provide context for the modules and records: the Context Paragraph, the Metadata, and the Category Link. The Context Paragraph: Each module includes short context paragraphs to provide background for understanding the records in the module. The paragraphs are intended to provide information and interesting details about the main audiovisual record while giving context to understand Mrs. Bush s work within the theme of the module. They are not meant to be a full account of her work within that area, rather they provide a brief introduction to encourage visitors to continue their own research into the topic. Below is an image of the context paragraph from the Afghanistan module: The Metadata: In archival terms, metadata means data about the data. It is a term used by archivists to note information about the records in our collection. In the metadata section of the modules you will find most of the following information: title, creator, location, date, description, and caption. For records that are in the National Archives online database, you will also find an Archival Record Catalog (or ARC) Identifier. The Local Identifier is the number used by the Library. Metadata for the audio or video clip can be found on the main module page. To find metadata about individual records, you will need to visit the Category Link page. 3 Each module has a different Category title. The seven category titles are: 1. Laura Bush Afghan Women and Children 2. Laura Bush Global Breast Cancer Awareness 3. Laura Bush Conservation and Preservation 4. Laura Bush Helping Americas Youth 5. Laura Bush Heart Truth 6. Laura Bush Malaria Initiative 7. Laura Bush Work with PEPFAR When you click on a Category link, you will be directed to a page that looks like this: It contains the same context paragraph as the front page and provides links to each of the individual records included in the module. Some Category link pages also have additional records that were not included in the module. To find metadata for each individual record, click on the blue name next to the image. 4 Metadata for documents will look like this: Metadata for photographs will look like this: Is there a way to download individual records for personal use? Yes! When you are looking at the images of individual records (artifacts and photographs), click on the blue Full Resolution hyperlink. This will open a full scale image in a new window. If you right click on the image and select Save Image As you will be able to save it to your computer. If a document is saved in a.jpg form, you will follow the same steps. If a document is saved in a.pdf form, you will see something that looks like this: When you click on the hyperlinked blue name title, the document will open in a new browser and you can click on the image of the disk in the top left hand corner to save it to your hard drive. The only record that you cannot download is the original audio or video clip that the module is tied to, however, as mentioned before, there are options for selecting the specific clips you may want to use. 5 What records and information are included in the itexts? A record will also be identified in the itexts as one of the following: Artifact Document Photograph If more than one record is included in the itext, it will be labeled with a plural, for instance Artifacts. Documents that have multiple images, but are still only one complete document, are still labeled in the singular, Document. Every record that is included has a short description so you will know what you are viewing; for longer descriptions and additional context, see the Category link pages. To view an individual itext, you will need to pop it out and increase the size. You are only able to pop one out at a time. To pop an itext out, click on the gray box in the upper right hand corner. This is what you will see: To increase the size of the popped out box, grab the bottom right corner and drag it out. George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum,

6 When you pop out artifacts, images, or documents, you have two other options. You can choose to view multiple images in a single or scrolling format and you can select how far to zoom in to each record. Below is a document that has been popped out. To zoom out so you can see the entire document, use the zoom button. By zooming out you are able to see more of the document. Since there are multiple documents in this itext, you will want to make sure the scroll button is highlighted gray (as opposed to the single button). By having the scroll button highlighted, you will be able to use the scroll bar on the side to see all three documents. If the single button is highlighted, you will only see the first document. 7 If the single button is selected, there is not an option to scroll to later documents. As an example, there are three documents in the itext below, with the single button selected, you can only see one of them. To pop an itext back in and select another one, click on the X in the upper right hand corner. George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum,

8 All modules come with Table of Contents and Transcript itexts and include a Search function, seen below. Table of Contents (TOC): The TOC allows you to access specific locations in the audio or video clip. When you click on an entry in the TOC, it will jump to that location in the video. It will also highlight in orange the entire length of that section. Transcript: The transcript is synchronized to follow the audio or video clip exactly. As the clip progresses, the blue highlight bar in the transcript will indicate where you are in the clip. To jump to a different section, click on the play button next to it. Search Function: If you would like to search either the TOC or the Transcript, use the Search itext and type in your search term, in this instance Afghanistan. Notice it will highlight the word in parts of the transcript or TOC that include it. If you click on one of these, it will take you to that location in the video. George W. 9 What is the map function on the modules? The map function uses files created by Google Maps to show locations that are referenced in the records. This is another way to provide context for the records. Using the Maps: Each of these features discussed below has an arrow pointing to it on the map. To zoom in or out on the maps, click the +/- signs in the top left corner. To change the map from a map interface to a satellite image, use the buttons in the top right hand corner of the map. To see the name of a location of importance denoted by a blue pin, hover over the pin with the mouse. IF the location is mentioned in the video and you hover over it, it will turn orange. By clicking on the pin, you will be taken to the portion of the video that mentions it. (This feature was largely used in longer videos). If you zoom in to a street level by one of the blue pins and click on the orange man to drag him onto the map, it will show you any street views that are available. To move the map, simply use the mouse, click on a point on the map and drag it the way you want to turn the map. George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum,

10 Where can I find further information on the topics in the modules? The Links to Additional Information itext was used to provide links to relevant, outside information. Many of these itexts contain links to articles and records located in the frozen White House Web site from the Bush Administration. As you can see on the image of the Malaria Links for Additional Information below, the top six links are from the frozen White House Web site. Other links to government sites are provided in most modules to give you the most recent context; these may include Web sites from the National Institutes of Health, those describing current government initiatives, etc. In addition to government and informational Web sites, we also included links to outside resources that include lesson plans and learning projects. Malaria No More, Teach UNICEF, Nothing But Nets, and Spread the Net are examples of these. Finally, if we were able to locate an entity that was mentioned in the records and their Web site proved informational, we included them. The Global Fund is an example of this. All of these links will take you out of the modules and into another Web site; to return to the modules, simply click your back browser button. I m a teacher are there lesson plans available related to the modules? At this point there are external links with lesson plans that relate to the content of the modules, however, no lesson plans have been created specifically for the modules. Over time, the Library hopes to add lesson plans that are created by the Library or submitted by teachers. That s where you come in! If you do something with the modules that works really well and do not mind the Library sharing it, please let us know by ing our education specialist at Bush43Education@nara.gov. We would like the modules to be a constantly evolving resource for student and educator use. Additionally, as more records become available or new activities are created, they will be added; so be sure to check back often.
