1 3PK July 13-14, 2013 Jacob and Esau Genesis 25 and 27 God loves us (even when we mess up). SCHEDULE for all sites: First 10 minutes of the service hour: Relationship-building time (kids get to know each other and the volunteers) Next 25 minutes: Large group teaching and worship Keep in mind, kids might not be perfectly engaged during small group. Do your best to engage every kid, but don t let redirecting take the place of reviewing the story. You may be surprised at what they pick up even if they appear to be disengaged! Last 30 minutes: Story review, snack and small groups, activities/crafts If you finish early, have kids engage group games as parents arrive. Check out the end of the activities section to find an idea for this week. As kids leave with mirrors, remind them to tell their parents about today s story. The story of Jacob and Esau reminds us that God s love isn t fair, and he gives blessings to those who don t deserve it. As frustrating as that is sometimes, it s actually great news for us! Today, try to help kids understand that God loves them.

2 Goal: to review the story and then emphasize what this story reveals about God Tip: Help show kids where to put stickers so they don t cover the whole mirror! Why? This story is tough because it doesn t seem fair that Jacob gets the blessing. And it isn t fair. But neither is the fact that God loves us! *As kids eat a snack, review the story. REVIEW 1. Show picture of Jacob and Esau a. One son was really hairy and liked to hunt. What was his name? (Esau) b. One son had smooth skin and liked to stay home and cook. What was his name? (Jacob) 2. Show picture of Esau and stew / stew and money a. When Esau was really hungry, what did he ask Jacob for? (a bowl of soup) b. Jacob gave Esau a bowl of soup. What did he ask Esau to give HIM? (his birthright; money; his blessing as the oldest son) 3. Show picture of Jacob and Rebekah scheming a. When Isaac was really old, what did Jacob and Rebekah do while Esau was hunting? (they made some food for Isaac, Jacob put on Esau s clothes; they tricked Isaac) 4. Show picture of Jacob getting blessing a. What did Isaac do when Jacob took the food to him? (He blessed Jacob!) b. Even though Jacob made a bad choice, did he get to be part of God s Story? (yes) 5. Show mirror board let each kid look into it a. Who ELSE does God want to be part of his story? (Let kids say: ME!) ACTIVITY Remember, God loves all of us even if people are mean to us or we mess up. We can all follow God and be part of his story, just like Jacob! (Continued on the following page)

3 Hand out the mirror board to every kid. Ask every kid to look in the mirror. Remind them that God loves them, no matter what. Have some fun: Ask them to make a silly face. God still loves you! Make a sad face. God still loves you! Make a confused face. God still loves you! Stick out their tongue. God still loves you! Close one eye. God still loves you! Then, use stickers to make a fun frame for the mirror. Give each kid 4-8. Remind them to look in it and say, God loves me! Then practice together. *Pray with the kids and thank God that he always loves us no matter what! Extra time? Try this: I Spy: You can play this from your seats or walk around the room. Lead first, to show the kids how to play. Say, I spy something with the color and let the kids guess. Or say, I spy something shaped like a and let the kids guess. Let the kids come up with their own objects, too. To mix things up, ask the kids to find something in the room with a certain color or shape and bring it to you. (Don t make it a contest to find an object first just have fun seeing many examples of colors and shapes!)

4 1 While we want kids to be able to relate to the fact that Jacob made a bad choice, put the emphasis on how much God loves each of us. Make sure you smile--and smile a lot! Seriously, have fun and the kids will have fun. Be friendly and engage them with lots of smiles. Did we forget to mention to smile?? Presenter: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kid s Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend, HOPS. She s going to remind us of the kind of choices we can make today in Kids Club. Video: HOPS 3 Put On Your Listening Ears (about 1 minute) REVIEW Presenter: (Holding up the Bible for kids to see.) This is God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. It s God s Rescue plan. Remember how God made the whole world and everything was good? The world was perfect! Give me a smile and a thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone): But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and sadness and death came into the world Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond) This was really sad. But even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God God loved them anyway! And he planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve and you and me can be close to God again. INTRO: GOD S FAMILY Well, God planned to send the Rescuer, Jesus, through a family! Remember, he chose a man named Abraham and Sarah and promised them a son named Isaac. They had to wait and wait and wait but they finally had a son just like God promised! And later, Isaac had two sons of his own. (Show picture of Jacob and Esau.) Their names were Jacob and Esau. Can you guys say Esau? (Let kids say: Esau!) Great job! Esau liked to hunt and was red and hairy! His dad, Isaac, liked him the best.

5 Jacob had smooth skin and he liked to cook. His mom, Rebekah, liked Jacob the best. And Jacob (point to Jacob on the screen he s the less hairy one) was going to be a HUGE part of God s story. He would have kids who would have kids who would have kids who would have kids and on and on until, one day, Jesus the Rescuer would be born into Jacob s family. JACOB WAS A PART OF GOD S STORY But in today s story, we re going to see that Jacob wasn t very nice to his brother Esau. They were always fighting and one day, Jacob played a mean trick on Esau! Can I see your mean face? (Let kids show their mean face.) Let me hear a mean arrrrgggggh! (Let kids make a mean sound.) Ooooh, those sound pretty mean! Is it a good choice (thumbs up) or a bad choice (thumbs down) to be mean? (Model and let kids put their thumbs down.) Now we re going to watch a video about Jacob and Esau and the mean trick Jacob played on Esau. As you watch, see if Jacob got to be a part of God s story, even though he was mean! Video: God s Story / Jacob and Esau Wow, so Jacob tricked his brother Esau. But even though Jacob made a bad choice did God love him anyway? (Let kids say: yes!) Yep, he sure did! WE CAN BE A PART OF GOD S STORY And even though we are sometimes mean (make your mean face), God loves US anyway, too! He even sent Jesus to rescue us from all the wrong choices we ve made. That s great news because it means everyone can be a part of God s Story! Now let s pray together and thank God that he loves us even when we mess up! Let s thank him that we can be a part of his story. Pray: Hi God! Thanks that you love all of us! Thank you that you sent Jesus to rescue us from all the wrong choices we ve made. We love you! Aaaaaaa-MEN. WORSHIP Let s worship God by singing some songs to Jesus! Song: Round and Round Song: Jesus Loves Me Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five first, or maybe tiptoe or hop to their groups.)

Jacob tricked his dad to get Esau s blessing, but he still got to be part of God s Story! That s good news for us, because we mess up, too. So we decorated mirrors to remind us that God loves each of us and wants us to be part of his story.
