2 English Language The Changes Ofqual feel that GCSE English has, historically, been more generously graded than other subjects: Greater use of modular exam choices Impact of coursework and controlled assessment conditions Speaking and Listening with sufficient checks on validity of assessments.

3 Changes to English Language Speaking and Listening does not count towards the final grade A separate mark will be awarded for Speaking and Listening No more internal assessments No coursework or Controlled Assessments Increase in difficulty and expectation especially at the C grade Examined at the end of the course only two terminal examinations

4 Two Qualifications English Language and English Literature Assessed by untiered, external exam only General increase in demand Content Examinations Assessments

5 English Language There are no set texts. To prepare students are expected to read a wide range of texts from 19 th -21 st century There are two papers. The texts are unseen. This is an entirely SKILLS based examination.

6 English Language Component 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing (Edexcel 1EN0/01) Exam Length: 1 hour and 45 minutes. 40% of the total GCSE Overview of assessment Section A Reading: questions on an unseen 19th-century fiction extract. Section B Writing: a choice of two writing tasks. The tasks are linked by a theme to the reading extract. Overview of skills for this paper Develop skills to analyse and evaluate 19th-century fiction extracts. Develop imaginative writing skills to engage the reader. Use spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately.

7 English Language Component 2: Non-fiction and Transactional Writing (Edexcel 1EN0/02) Exam Length: 2 hours. 60% of the total GCSE Overview of assessment Section A Reading: questions on two thematically linked, unseen non-fiction extracts. Section B Writing: a choice of two writing tasks. The tasks are linked by a theme to the reading extracts. Overview of skills for this paper Develop skills to analyse, evaluate and compare non-fiction extracts. Develop transactional writing skills for a variety of forms, purposes and audiences. Use spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately. Speaking and Listening No longer counted towards a student s final grade. However, it is a compulsory part of their course. An assessment of spoken language will appear on all students certificates as a separately reported grade, alongside the overall grade.

9 Skills for a Level 5 Work with demanding content Read a wide range of texts fluently and with a good understanding Read critically and use this knowledge in different contexts Express ideas effectively and coherently, using Standard English appropriately Use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately Acquire and apply a wide range of vocabulary

10 English Literature Emphasis on classic literature and substantial whole texts in detail. Expectation that students cover a greater range of English Literary Heritage, Romantic poetry, 19th century novel, no short stories. Students are required to know a Shakespeare play, 2 novels and a poetry anthology. There are two papers.

11 English Literature Emphasis on classic literature and substantial whole texts in detail. Component 1: Shakespeare and Post-1914 Literature Exam Length: 1 hour and 45 minutes 50% of the total GCSE Overview of assessment Section A Shakespeare: a two-part question, with the first task focused on an extract of approximately 30 lines. The second task is focused on how a theme reflected in the extract is explored elsewhere in the play. Section B Post-1914 British play or novel: ONE essay question. Overview of skills for this paper Develop skills to analyse how the language, form, structure and context of texts can create meanings and effects. Develop skills to maintain a critical style and informed personal response.

12 English Literature Component 2: 19th-century Novel and Poetry since 1789 (Edexcel 1ET0/02) Exam Length: 2 hours and 15 minutes. 50% of the total GCSE Overview of assessment Section A 19th-century novel: a two part question, with the first part focussed on an extract of approximately 400 words. The second part is an essay question exploring the whole text. Section B Part 1: ONE question comparing a named poem from the Pearson Poetry Anthology collection to another poem from that collection. The named poem will be shown in the question paper. Part 2: ONE question comparing two unseen contemporary poems. Overview of content and skills Develop skills to analyse how the language, form, structure and context of texts can create meanings and effects. Develop skills to maintain a critical style and informed personal response. Develop comparison skills.

13 Skills for a Level 5 Reading challenging texts fluently and their ability to make connections across texts Read in depth, critically and evaluatively Discuss and explain their understanding and ideas coherently and clearly Write accurately, effectively and analytically about their reading, using Standard English Acquire and use a wide vocabulary

14 What can you do to help? Encourage your child to read at home this needs to be a wide range of texts, from non-fiction articles to whole novels Discuss the news and current affairs with your child so that they get used to developing a viewpoint Practise summarising a text once it has been read Look at how a text has been put together why it has been written? The purpose of the author? Look closely at unusual vocabulary and learn new words and spellings record these separately in a book at home
