Weekly Weather Flash December US THIS WEEK: Cold Temperatures Support Seasonal Purchasing Across North America; Rain and Snow Limit Holiday Shopping Traffic A LOOK AHEAD: The Run-Up to Christmas Will Be than Last Year; Stormy Conditions May Disrupt Holiday Travel Europe THIS WEEK: Cold Conditions for All Areas; Rain and Snow Across Eastern Europe A LOOK AHEAD: Temperatures Start Out Mild; Temperatures Move in from the East Late in the Week
US Week of December Retail implications: Demand for cold weather categories will increase, as most of the US will be colder than normal and last year. Last year this week, the weather was warm: The US had its warmest third week of December since It was the wettest week since % Snow Throwers Winter settles in: Most of the US, predominantly the Northern Tier, will be colder than normal and last year throughout the week. Many markets will continue to see below-freezing conditions, and subzero temperatures are expected in the Midwest. The Southern Tier is the only area that will see warmer temperatures than normal and last year, with readings in the 60s and 70s. The snow is piling up: Snow and ice are expected across parts of the Northeast late in the week, with a change to rain in Mid-Atlantic locations as the weekend progresses. A new system will move from the Rockies into the Northern Plains late in the week, bringing the potential for heavy snow and strong winds. Rain for the South and West: Two fronts will move across the Deep South early and late week, bringing more rain and severe weather to the region. California will see rain late in the week. 2
US Week of December Retail implications: Cold weather from the Central Plains to the East Coast will support last-minute shopping demand for winter categories. Last year this week, the weather was warm and wet: The US had its warmest and wettest fourth week of December in more than 55 years, although snowfall was below normal. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were also the warmest in more than 55 years, driven by record warmth in the East. 7% Fleece Cold weather leading up to Christmas: Temperatures will be colder than last year across most of the country leading up to Christmas. The coldest anomalies will stretch from the Central Plains to the East Coast, supporting last-minute shopping demand for winter categories. Temperatures in the Southwest will trend similar to last year. White Christmas for northern locations: A western system will move into the Plains by midweek and then head for the East Coast by late week. The system may produce snow for northern locations, particularly in the Great Lakes and Northern Plains regions. Rain and thunder will be focused in the South. 3
Europe Week of December Bottled Water Hun Tea France UK Retail implications: Consumers in Western Europe will not feel the winter cold while they do their Christmas shopping, but temperatures will still be cooler than last year, resulting in strong yearover-year demand for seasonal products. Cooling late in the week: Mild temperatures will cover Europe early in the week, but another push of cold air will come in from the East. Much of Western Europe will stay warmer than normal, while the East will be colder. All areas are expected to be cooler than last year. A mix of precipitation: Snow and rain will fall over the Northeast early in the week, and then rainfall will shift to the Southeast. A low-pressure system will bring rain to the West by the end of the week. 4
Europe Week of December Ice Cream Coffee Netherlands Greece Retail implications: Rain and snow moving from the Northwest to the Southeast may impact retail traffic, but cold conditions in the run-up to Christmas will increase demand for winter categories. Christmas cooling: Temperatures will start out mild, but more cold air will surge in from the East in time for Christmas Eve. Temperatures in the West will remain cooler than last year even on the warmest days of the week. Rain tracks southeast: A low-pressure system will move from the Northwest to the Southeast over the first half of the week, bringing rain and some higher-elevation snow with it. The run-up to Christmas will largely be dry, with light precipitation expected only in the Mediterranean and portions of Scandinavia. 5
