By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion. On the willows there we hung up our lyres. For there our captors required of us songs, And our tormentors, mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion! --Psalm 137:1-3
The prophets of the Exile Israel s united kingdom lasted over 100 years, through the reigns of Saul, David & Solomon. The kingdom then divided; Israel (N) lasted from 931 BC to 722 BC; while Judah (S) finally fell to Babylon over a 20 year period ending in 586 BC.
The prophets of the Exile Superpower Assyria had fallen, its capital Nineveh destroyed by Babylon in 612 BC (see Nahum). Babylon crushed Carchemish in Egypt in 605 leaving no survivors. Next to fall to the might of Babylon would be Judah.
The prophets of the Exile Babylon, under Nebuchadnezzar, began the conquest in 605 BC, deporting thousands of captives (including Daniel). In December of 598 Jerusalem was again besieged, and in March of 597 Nebuchadnezzar took possession of Jerusalem. The King was taken captive with thousands of citizens, including Ezekiel (2 Kings 24:11-18).
The prophets of the Exile The final destruction of Jerusalem and final deportation took place in 586. Israel was forced from its home, having broken faith with God. Jerusalem was reduced to rubble.
Ezekiel: I will vindicate My holiness Ezekiel ministered from approx ; Jeremiah, Daniel, and Obadiah overlapped portions of Ezekiel s ministry Note 14:14, 20 Daniel was well known by the time Ezekiel wrote. 1:1-3 Ezekiel was both prophet and priest. He was called while in Babylon.
Ezekiel: I will vindicate My holiness Ezekiel is written in the first person the most intensely personal of the prophets. God never calls Ezekiel by name, but son of man (ben adam) nearly 100 times. Judah s sin continues: 16: Remember Ezekiel s audience: he prophesied, not in Judah, but in Babylon to captives who thought that Jerusalem would not fall, and they would return home soon.
Ezekiel: I will vindicate My holiness Ezekiel is one of the easiest of the prophetical books to outline: Chs Oracles of judgment against Judah. Chs Oracles of judgment against surrounding nations. Chs Oracles of Israel s restoration.
Ezekiel: I will vindicate My holiness Ezekiel s call: 2:1-10 Ezekiel as object lesson: 3:1-11, 25-27; 4:1-17; 5:1-6; 12:1-20; 21:6-7, And the hardest object lesson of all: 24: An end has come 7:1-13. See 33:21 an escapee from Jerusalem evaded Babylonian forces and brought word of Jerusalem s fall to Ezekiel. There were no more false hopes.
Ezekiel: I will vindicate My holiness Of the roughly 65 direct or indirect quotations of Ezekiel in the NT, 48 are in Revelation. Which tells you what? John saw in Ezekiel s prophecies the same reasons that led to the destruction of Jerusalem again in 70 AD. Ezekiel s vision of the restoration informed John s theology & portrayal of the new heavens & new earth.
Key themes in Ezekiel: The failure of leadership 11:1-13; 13:1-10; ch. 19; 34:1-10. The glory of God 1:28; 3:12, 23; 10:4, 18-19; 11:22-23; 43:4-5; 44:4. The vindication of God s holiness 20:39-41; 36:20-23; 38:23; 39:7, 27 (cf. Matt. 6:9).
Key themes in Ezekiel: The purpose of the Exile: A purified people 6:8-10; 11:13-20; 12:13-16; 14: Personal accountability to God 18:1-4, 23, 30:32; 33:1-20. Covenants remembered and established 16:59-63; 36:22-28; 37:24-28.
Daniel: His dominion is an everlasting dominion Ok Daniel chs. 1-6 is nice Sunday School stories, and chs is difficult prophecy. The prophecy I get Daniel is a prophet, so he s supposed to prophesy. But what s the purpose for chs. 1-6? Why did Daniel write that and include it in his book?
Daniel: His dominion is an everlasting dominion Think context what is the historical context? Daniel is writing to exiles in Babylon: Uprooted from their land, many have died, a foreign power has taken what they thought was the Promised Land, the Temple is destroyed, and God has forsaken them. What would the exiles think when they read Daniel chs. 1-6? (Hold that thought )
Daniel: His dominion is an everlasting dominion Daniel was probably 15 or so when he was taken into exile; he lived the rest of his days away from Israel (to at least 85). Daniel exalted God and rose quickly to a prominent role by royal appointment. After the fall of the Babylonian empire he served the Medo-Persian empire that succeeded it, until at least the 3 rd year of King Cyrus of Persia in 536 BC (10:1).
Daniel: His dominion is an everlasting dominion The core theological message of Daniel: God is sovereign. He overrules, and eventually will eradicate, human evil. Why chs. 1-6? He is presented as a model of faithfulness in exile and opposition. Why chs. 7-12? The visions are not to prompt repentance but to encourage faithfulness in a time of distress.
The three great themes of Daniel: 1. The sovereignty of God: All evil arrayed against God s people shall ultimately fail. See 7:23-27; 10:12-14; 11: God will provide for His people even when they feel forsaken. Persevere in faith He will never fully forsake His people. Can t get much worse than being thrown in a lion s den and God was even there to protect His people.
The three great themes of Daniel: 3. Obedience is the right response even if it looks like God has abandoned you. See 3:16-18 Though the influence of pagan culture may be all around, resolve to continue in obedience 1:8. Don t be fatalistic or discouraged, but this world is going to get worse. Be steadfastly obedient 2:31-45; 7:15, 28.
Prophecy in Daniel: The prophecy in Daniel chs is complex, full of symbolism, and not easy to interpret But don t forget the central theme: The sovereign rule and future triumph of God over all earthly power. Faith in this perspective enabled Daniel to live a godly life in exile, and its intent is to do the same today (Phil. 3:17-21).
Prophecy in Daniel: The Reader s Digest version The dominant use of symbolism in Daniel is to portray the succession of world kingdoms from the time of Daniel to the distant future, when the coming of the Kingdom of God will destroy Gentile world powers, end the distress of Israel, resurrect the dead, judge mankind, and reward the godly with everlasting life. David Turner
Prophecy in Daniel: In a time of captivity, exile, oppression and fear, Daniel s prophecy answers the question: Is God still on His throne? Daniel s prophecy is known as apocalyptic literature, along with Revelation and parts of Zechariah & Isaiah. Desperate circumstances called for the desperate and shocking apocalyptic literature, in which God must directly and violently intervene. We ll explain how to read and interpret apocalyptic when we introduce Revelation.
Question: When Jesus calls Himself Son of Man, what is He saying? It was His favorite title for Himself His Jewish audience would have understood it immediately. In Ezekiel, son of man simply distinguishes Ezekiel as a human, setting him apart from God. See Dan. 7: This son of man is quite different from son of man in Ezekiel.
Characteristics of the son of man in Daniel: He is a heavenly, superhuman figure He is a ruler with eternal dominion and authority He has the dominion, glory & authority of the Most High (cf. 4:34) All peoples, nations & kingdoms will serve Him
So when Jesus says Son of Man Mark 14:61-62 it is the picture of the son of man from Daniel, not Ezekiel. When Jesus says Son of Man, He is saying that He is God that is why in Mark 14:63-65 He is charged with blasphemy and the high priest tore his clothes. For Jesus to call Himself Son of Man was an offense worthy of death. See Rev. 1:12-17 When John saw one like a son of man, he fell at His feet as though dead. See also John 1:51, 5:27, 9:35-39
