7 Preface Purpose The Dell Compellent VMware Integration plugin provides management of Dell Compellent Storage Center storage via the VMware vsphere client. This guide describes how to install, configure, and use the Dell Compellent VMware Integration plugin. Audience Related Publications The intended audience of this guide is information technology professionals who have intermediate to expert knowledge of both the Compellent Storage Center and VMware Virtual Infrastructure 4.x. This guide assumes administrative working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server operating systems, VMware ESX servers, the VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client, the ESX service console, bash shell scripting, as well as knowledge of the Microsoft sysprep utility. 10 Introduction The Dell Compellent VMware Integration 1.1 for VMware vsphere application is a plugin that provides storage administrators the ability to seamlessly add and manage Dell Compellent storage via the VMware vsphere client. Note Unless stated otherwise, all procedures in this guide are executed in the vsphere client. Key Features The Dell Compellent vsphere plugin provides these functions: Adding and removing storage (datastores and Raw Device Mappings) on the Storage Center. Provisioning virtual machines on the Storage Center. Configuring VMware ESX hosts on the Storage Center. Creating and Managing Storage Center Replays. Replicating datastores between Storage Centers. Replication Requirements To replicate data from one Storage Center to another, make sure the following requirements are met. Requirement Storage Centers iscsi Remote Systems Description Both the source and destination Storage Centers must be configured in the VMware vsphere client. see Disabling and Enabling the Dell Compellent Plugin on page 7. If you are using iscsi connections for replications: On the source Storage Center, the destination Storage Center must be defined as an iscsi Remote System. On the destination Storage Center, the source Storage Center must be defined as an iscsi Remote Connection. See the Enterprise Manager User Guide for instructions on configuring iscsi connections between Storage Centers. QoS Definition A quality of service (QoS) definition must be set up for the replication. See the Enterprise Manager User Guide for instructions on creating QoS definitions. 3

14 Installing Dell Compellent VMware Integration Prerequisites VMware vsphere client is properly installed and able to connect to the vcenter server. VMware PowerCLI is installed on the same host as the vsphere client. When installing VMware PowerCLI, accept all the defaults presented during the installation process. VMware vsphere client is closed while installing the Compellent VMware Integration. Procedure 1 Download the Dell Compellent vsphere plugin installation file from the Dell Compellent customer portal. ( 2 Unzip the Dell Compellent vsphere plugin file onto the vsphere client host. 3 Launch the.msi file and follow the instructions in the wizard. 4 When installation is complete, log on to the vsphere client to verify that the plugin installed successfully. If the plugin is installed, the Compellent logo is displayed in the Solutions and Applications group. Note To verify that the Dell Compellent plugin is enabled, see Disabling and Enabling the Dell Compellent Plugin on page 7. 6 Dell Compellent VMware Integration

15 Disabling and Enabling the Dell Compellent Plugin Disabling and Enabling the Dell Compellent Plugin After installation, the Dell Compellent vsphere plugin is automatically enabled. To disable the plugin 1 In the vsphere Client, select Manage Plug-ins from the Plug-ins menu. 2 Right-click on the Compellent vsphere Plugin, and select Disable. 3 Click Close to close the Plug-ins Manager. To enable the plugin 1 In the vsphere Client, select Manage Plug-ins from the Plug-in menu. 2 Right-click on the Compellent vsphere Plugin, and select Enable. 3 Click Close to close the Plug-ins Manager. 7

16 Adding and Removing Storage Centers Once you ve installed the Dell Compellent vsphere plugin, configure the Dell Compellent Storage Centers you want to manage via the vsphere client. To add a Storage Center 1 Log on to the vsphere client, and click Home in the main toolbar. 2 In the Solutions and Applications group, click on the Storage Center logo. 3 In the left column under Storage Systems, select [Add New System]. 4 In the Storage Center Settings box, provide identification for the Storage Center you want to add: Host: Enter the host name or management IP address for the Storage Center. User Name/Password: Enter the username and password for accessing the Storage Center. Note The Storage Center logon user must be a Storage Center administrator. 5 Click Add. To update access information for a Storage Center 1 Log on to the vsphere client, and click Home in the main toolbar. 2 In the Solutions and Applications group, click on the Compellent Storage Center logo. 3 In the left column under Storage Systems, select the Storage Center you want to update. 4 In the Storage Center Settings box, provide new access information for the Storage Center: Host: Enter the host name or management IP address for the Storage Center. User Name/Password: Enter the username and password for accessing the Storage Center. 5 Click Update. To remove a Storage Center 1 Log on to the vsphere client, and click Home in the main toolbar. 2 In the Solutions and Applications group, click on the Compellent Storage Center logo. 3 In the left column under Storage Systems, select the Storage Center you want to remove. 4 Click Remove. 8 Dell Compellent VMware Integration

20 Introduction to Dell Compellent Storage Dell Compellent VMware Integration for VMware vsphere allows an administrator to manage Dell Compellent storage via the vcenter vsphere client. A Dell Compellent Storage Center configures and uses storage based on the following: Dell Compellent Storage Term Storage Tier physical media classes Description Storage Tiers represent the classification of all physical storage media in the Storage Center. Storage Center automatically populates storage tiers with the available media in the Assigned disk folder: Tier 1: Contains the fastest media appropriate for often used, mission-critical data. Tier 1 media is typically the most expensive media. Tier 2: Contains medium-quality media appropriate for medium priority data. Tier 3: Contains slower, inexpensive media appropriate for backup copies, Replays, and low-priority, rarely used data. Storage Type RAID level and page size Volume a logical unit of storage Data Type writeable or Replay Within each tier, data can be stored as: non-redundant RAID 0 with 2 MB page size redundant RAID 10, RAID 5-5, RAID 5-9 with 2 MB, 512 MB, or 4 MB page size. dual redundant RAID 10 with 2 MB page size The default (and recommended) setting for storage type is redundant using both RAID 10 and RAID 5-9 with a 2 MB page size. On the Storage Center, a volume is a logical unit of storage. When you add a datastore within the VMware vsphere client, you create and map a new Compellent volume as a datastore or map an existing Compellent volume as a datastore. Volume data can be either of the following: Writeable: Data dynamically written to storage. Replay: Point-in-time copy data. 12 Dell Compellent VMware Integration

21 Introduction to Dell Compellent Storage Dell Compellent Storage Term Storage Profiles applied to a volume to determine how data is migrated on the Storage Center Description Storage Profiles determine how volume data is stored and migrated on the Storage Center. System-defined Storage Profiles include: Recommended: Available only on Storage Centers with Licensed Data Progression. Use the Recommended profile for most volumes to optimize Data Progression and performance on the Storage Center. The Recommended profile allows the system to automatically progress data between storage types and across all storage tiers based on data type and usage. High Priority: Use the High Priority profile only for volumes that contain data you want to keep in tier 1 storage. That is, applying the High Priority profile to a volume prevents the volume data from migrating to another tier. Medium Priority: Use the Medium Priority profile only for volumes that contain data you want to keep in tier 2 storage. That is, applying the Medium Priority profile to a volume prevents the volume data from migrating to another tier. Low Priority: Use the Low Priority profile only for volumes that contain data you want to keep in tier 3 storage. That is, applying the Low Priority profile to a volume prevents the volume data from migrating to another tier. Note You can create and modify Storage Profiles within Storage Center, if you also have licensed Data Progression software. Replays and Replay Profiles applied to a volume to determine how often Replays will be taken A Storage Center Replay is a point-in-time copy of data. As such, a Replay can be exposed and mapped to allow recovery of a datastore or virtual machine. Replay Profiles determine a schedule for volume Replays. Systemdefined Replay Profiles include commonly used schedules for daily and weekly Replays. Custom Replay profiles can be created to schedule Replays appropriate to the data you want to back up. View Volume an Exposed (mapped) Replay Data Progression automatically migrating volume data based on the Storage Profile settings An exposed (mapped) Replay used to recover data from a point-intime copy of data (Replay). Based on the Storage Profile applied to the volume and the Data Progression licensing, volume data automatically progresses on the Storage Center: On Storage Centers with licensed Data Progression, data can automatically migrate to different Storage Types within a Storage Tier, and also across Storage Tiers. On Storage Centers without licensed Data Progression, data can migrate only within a designated Storage Tier. 13

22 Adding a Datastore Use the Add Compellent Storage wizard to add Dell Compellent storage as a datastore. When you add Dell Compellent storage, you create and/or map a Dell Compellent volume on the Dell Compellent Storage Center. See Introduction to Dell Compellent Storage on page 12 for details on Storage Center volumes. There are two options for adding Dell Compellent storage: Create a new Storage Center volume to use as a datastore. For this option, you must specify all required volume attributes. Map an existing Storage Center volume to use as a datastore. For this option, select an existing Storage Center volume to map up to an ESX host. Note that the existing volume must be a formatted VMFS datastore. 14 Dell Compellent VMware Integration

23 Adding a Datastore To add a datastore using a new Dell Compellent volume 1 Right-click on an object in the Inventory that can be a parent of a datastore: Data Center Cluster Host 2 Select Manage Compellent Storage > Add Datastore. The Add Compellent Storage Wizard is displayed. 3 Under Host name, select the Storage Center on which to add the datastore, and click Next. 4 In the Select Action Type section, select Create New Compellent Volume, and click Next. 5 On the Volume page, provide the name, size, and folder for the new Compellent volume, and click Next. 6 Select a Storage Profile for the volume, and click Next. Note Compellent recommends using the Recommended profile for most volumes. 7 Select a Replay profile for the volume, and click Next. 8 Specify the LUN for mapping the volume, and click Next. 9 Select the protocol for mapping, and click Next. 10 Specify the name, maximum file size and location for the datastore, and click Next. 11 Review the settings for the datastore, and click Finish. 15

24 To add a datastore using an existing Compellent volume 1 Right-click on an object in the Inventory that can be a parent of a datastore: Data Center Cluster Host 2 Select Manage Compellent Storage > Add Datastore. The Add Compellent Storage Wizard is displayed. 3 Select the Storage Center on which to add the datastore, and click Next. 4 Select Map Existing Compellent Volume, and click Next. 5 Locate and select an existing Compellent volume to map as a datastore, and click Next. Note The Compellent volume must be a VMFS. 6 Specify the LUN for mapping the volume, and click Next. 7 Select the protocol for mapping, and click Next. 8 Specify the name and location for the datastore, and click Next. 9 Review the settings for the datastore, and click Finish. 16 Dell Compellent VMware Integration

25 Expanding a Datastore Expanding a Datastore Use the Expand Datastore Wizard to increase the size of a datastore. To expand a datastore 1 Right-click on an existing datastore. 2 Select Manage Compellent Storage > Expand Datastore. The Expand Datastore Wizard is displayed. 3 Specify a new size for the volume, and click Next. 4 Review the new volume size setting, and click Finish. 17

26 Adding a Raw Device Use the Add Raw Device Wizard to add a Raw Device Mapping (RDM) to a host or cluster. The wizard allows you to: Create a new raw device based on a new Compellent volume. Create a new raw device based on an existing Compellent volume. Map an existing raw device to additional hosts or clusters. To add a new raw device using a new Compellent volume 1 Display either the Hosts and Clusters or Virtual Machines and Templates view. 2 Right-click on the virtual machine for which you want to add a raw device, and select Manage Compellent Storage > Add Raw Device. The Add Raw Device Wizard is displayed. 3 Select Add New Raw Device Mapping to Virtual Machine, specify a node for the virtual device, and click Next. 4 Select one or more hosts to which to map the device, and click Next. 5 Select Create New Compellent Volume, and click Next. 6 Provide the name, size, and folder for the new Compellent volume, and click Next. 7 Select a Storage Profile for the volume, and click Next. Note Compellent recommends using the Recommended profile for most volumes. 8 Select a Replay profile for the volume, and click Next. 9 Specify the LUN for mapping the volume, and click Next. 10 Select the protocol for mapping, and click Next. 11 Select the compatibility mode for the raw device, and click Next. 12 Review the settings for the raw device, and click Finish. 18 Dell Compellent VMware Integration

27 Adding a Raw Device To add a new raw device using an existing Compellent volume 1 Go to Hosts and Clusters or Virtual Machines and Templates in the Inventory. 2 Right-click on the virtual machine for which you want to add a raw device, and select Manage Compellent Storage > Add Raw Device. The Add Raw Device Wizard is displayed. 3 Select Add New Raw Device Mapping to Virtual Machine, specify a node for the virtual device, and click Next. 4 Select one or more hosts to which to map the device, and click Next. 5 Select Map Existing Compellent Volume, and click Next. 6 Find and select the volume you want to map as a raw device, and click Next. 7 Specify the LUN for mapping the volume, and click Next. 8 Select the protocol for mapping, and click Next. 9 Select the compatibility mode for the raw device, and click Next. 10 Review the settings for the raw device, and click Finish. 19

28 To map an existing raw device to additional hosts or clusters 1 Go to Hosts and Clusters or Virtual Machines and Templates in the Inventory. 2 Right-click on the virtual machine that has a raw device you want to map to another host or cluster, and select Manage Compellent Storage > Add Raw Device. The Add Raw Device Wizard is displayed. 3 Select Map Existing Raw Device Mapping to Hosts or Clusters, and click Next. 4 Select one or more hosts to which to map the device, and click Next. 5 Select Map Existing Compellent Volume, and click Next. 6 Find and select the volume you want to map as a raw device, and click Next. 7 Specify the LUN for mapping the volume, and click Next. Note If the volume is already mapped to other hosts, the new mapping attempts to use the same LUN if available. 8 Select the protocol for mapping, and click Next. 9 Select the compatibility mode for the raw device, and click Next. 10 Review the settings for the raw device, and click Finish. 20 Dell Compellent VMware Integration

29 Removing a Datastore or a Raw Device Removing a Datastore or a Raw Device Use the Remove Storage Wizard to remove a datastore or a raw device mapping. To remove a datastore 1 Right-click on a datastore and select Manage Compellent Storage > Remove Datastore. The Remove Storage Wizard is displayed. 2 Select the datastore to remove. 3 Select a retention option for the removed datastore, and click Next. 4 Review the settings for removing the datastore, and click Finish. To remove a raw device 1 Right-click on a virtual machine and select Manage Compellent Storage > Remove Raw Device. The Remove Storage Wizard is displayed. 2 Select one or more raw devices to remove, and click Next. 3 Select a retention option for the removed devices, and click Next. 4 Review the settings for removing the raw device(s), and click Finish. 21

30 Configuring Data Instant Replays Configuring Data Instant Replay means assigning a Replay profile to a datastore (Compellent volume) or all volumes associated with a virtual machine to establish a schedule for automatically taking Replays. Only Replay profiles already on the Storage Center are available for selection. For instructions on creating or modifying Replay profiles, see either the Storage Center System Manager User Guide or the Enterprise Manager User Guide. To configure Data Instant Replay for a datastore 1 Right-click on a datastore, and select Manage Compellent Storage > Configure Data Instant Replay. 2 Select one or more Replay profiles to apply to the datastore, and click Next. 3 Review the Replay profile settings, and click Finish. To configure Data Instant Replay for all volumes on a virtual machine 1 Right-click on an a virtual machine, and select Manage Compellent Storage > Configure Data Instant Replay. 2 For each virtual machine volume, select one or more Replay profiles to apply to the volume and click Next. 3 Review the Replay profile settings for all volumes, and click Finish. 22 Dell Compellent VMware Integration

31 Creating a Replay Creating a Replay In addition to scheduled Replays taken automatically based on a Replay profile, you can also take an immediate (unscheduled) Replay. During Replay creation, you can specify an expiration time for the Replay(s). Note that if you create a Replay with the Never Expire option, the Replay remains on the Storage Center until it is manually expired. To take a Replay of a datastore 1 Right-click on a datastore, and select Manage Compellent Storage > Create Replay. 2 Specify the expiration time for the Replay, as well as an optional description, and click Next. 3 Review the Replay settings, and click Finish. To take a Replay of volumes associated with a virtual machine 1 Right-click on an a virtual machine, and select Manage Compellent Storage > Create Replay. 2 Specify the expiration time for the Replay(s), as well as an optional description, and click Next. 3 Optionally, create a temporary VMware snapshot of the virtual machine and specify whether to include the machine memory and/or quiesce the file system. 4 Review the Replay settings, and click Finish. 23

32 Expiring a Replay When a Replay is created, an expiration time is assigned to the Replay. However, you can override the expiration time by explicitly expiring a Replay. Expiring a Replay removes the Replay from the Storage Center. To expire Replays for a datastore 1 Right-click on a datastore, and select Manage Compellent Storage > Expire Replays. 2 Select the Replays you want to expire, and click Next. 3 Review the list of Replays to expire, and click Finish. Make sure there is at least one Quality of Service (QoS) definition to control the replication. See the Enterprise Manager User Guide for instructions on creating and modifying QoS definitions. Note The Compellent Integration for VMware vsphere provides the ability to start a replication. To manage replications, use the Compellent Enterprise Manager client. 38 Introduction Use the Provision Virtual Machines wizard to create one or more virtual machines on the Compellent Storage Center. The wizard offers three options for creating virtual machines on the Storage Center: Expose VMFS gold image This options assumes you have already 1) Created a VMFS datastore and deployed VMs on the datastore; 2) Taken a Replay of the VMFS datastore. See To create a virtual machine by exposing a VMFS gold image on page 31 for step-by-step instructions. Create virtual machines using raw device gold image This option assumes you have already 1) Created a raw device and deployed VMs on the raw device; 2) Taken a Replay of the raw device. Deduplication: Enable this option to copy only the changed portions of the Replay history on the source volume, rather than all data captured in each Replay. Quiesce file system (if available): Select this option to pause running processes in the guest operating system before taking the snapshot. This ensures that the file system is in a known, consistent state when the snapshot is taken. (Note that this option requires that VMware Tools are installed.)
