1 Family History Library 35 North West Temple Street Salt Lake City, UT USA United States, List of Colonial and Territorial Censuses Censuses for some towns and counties exist for the early American colonies and for areas colonized by France, Spain, and Mexico. Lists of early residents, sometimes referred to as "censuses," have usually been reconstructed from other records, such as tax and land records. Following are censuses and lists of residents taken during the colonial and territorial periods for areas that are now the fifty states: Alabama There are colonial censuses for Alabama between 1706 and Territorial censuses exist for 1801, 1803, 1805, 1816, 1818, and Alaska Some district and territorial censuses were taken in Alaska from 1870 through (For more information, see the census section of the Alaska Research Outline.) Arizona The Arizona area is included in the following censuses: 1860: New Mexico territorial census : Arizona territorial censuses. Territorial censuses were taken in 1864, 1866, 1867, 1869, 1871, 1872, and Arkansas The Arkansas area was under French and Spanish rule from 1686 through For lists of residents, see Morris S. Arnold's book, Arkansas Colonials: A Collection of French and Spanish Records Listing Early Europeans in Arkansas, Arkansas took territorial censuses for 1823, 1829, and California Some Spanish and Mexican colonial censuses exist for California for the 1790s, 1836, and Colorado The Colorado area was included in the following censuses: 1860: Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Utah territories. 1870: Colorado Territory. Connecticut For the colonial period, there is a 1670 colonial census substitute, the Connecticut 1670 Census.
2 Delaware The following colonial censuses of Delaware are available: Early Delaware Census Records, The 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware. Delaware 1782 Tax Assessment and Census. District of Columbia In the colonial period, before 1775, the Georgetown area was in Montgomery County, Maryland, and the Alexandria region was in Fairfax County. See the Maryland and Virginia lists in this guide for colonial censuses. Florida Colonial censuses of Florida were taken in 1783, 1786, and Territorial censuses were taken in 1814, 1825, and Georgia There do not appear to be any colonial censuses for Georgia; however, the book A List of the Early Settlers of Georgia lists settlers who were in Georgia from 1733 through Hawaii Colonial censuses of Hawaii were taken in 1866, 1878, 1890, and Hawaii was annexed by the United States in 1898 and became a state in No state censuses of Hawaii have been taken. The Family History Library has the U. S. federal censuses of Hawaii for 1900, 1910, and Idaho The Idaho area was included in the following territorial censuses: 1850: Oregon Territory. 1860: Washington Territory and Utah Territory. 1870: Idaho Territory. Illinois Illinois territorial censuses were taken between 1807 and Indiana An 1807 territorial census is available for Indiana. The 1810 census exists for parts of Harrison County. Iowa Residents of the Iowa area were included in the following territorial censuses: 1836, 1838: Wisconsin Territory : Iowa Territory. 2
3 The territorial censuses were taken in 1836, 1838, 1840, 1841, 1842, 1843, 1844, and Kansas There are territorial censuses for Kansas for 1855 and Kentucky The Territory of Kentucky was established July 26, Kentucky was admitted as a state on June 1, A 1790 census was taken but was burned in a fire in There is a substitute 1790 census, First Census of Kentucky 1790, constructed from tax lists for Before 1790, see the following census substitutes: Master Index Virginia Surveys and Grants, These land grants were in the area that is now Kentucky. The 1787 Census of Virginia: An Accounting of the Names of Every White Male Tithable Over 21 Years, the Number of White Males Between 16 & 21 Years, the Number of Slaves Over 16 & Those Under 16 Years, Together with a Listing of Their Horses, Cattle, and Carriages... This includes names from several counties which were in what is now Kentucky Residents of Nelson County Virginia (Now Kentucky) Recorded in Tithable and Tax Lists. Louisiana Colonial censuses of Louisiana were taken by the French from 1699 through 1732, and by the Spanish from 1770 through For a detailed list of these colonial censuses, see the Louisiana chapter in Ancestry's Redbook: American State, County & Town Sources. Territorial censuses were taken of New Orleans in 1804 and for much of the Louisiana Territory in Maine There are no colonial censuses for Maine; however, a helpful substitute is The Massachusetts Tax Valuation List of 1771, which includes Maine towns. Maryland Colonial censuses for 1776 and 1778 are available for Maryland. See the census section of the Maryland Research Outline for more information about these censuses. Massachusetts No colonial censuses were taken for Massachusetts; however, The Massachusetts Tax Valuation List of 1771 is a helpful census substitute. 3
4 Michigan In the colonial period, the Michigan area was under French and then British control. Several censuses were taken. These censuses are listed in the book, Michigan Censuses, Under the French, British and Americans. The Michigan Territory was formed in Michigan territorial censuses were taken in 1827, 1834, and Minnesota The Minnesota area was included in the following territorial censuses: 1820: Michigan Territory. 1836: Wisconsin Territory. 1840: Wisconsin Territory and Iowa Territory. 1850: Minnesota Territory. 5 New Hampshire There are published colonial censuses for New Hampshire: New Hampshire 1732 Census. New Hampshire 1776 Census. A census substitute is available for the earlier period: New Hampshire Residents New Jersey No colonial censuses of New Jersey remain; however, there are several census substitutes. The earliest is the 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware... There is the Revolutionary Census of New Jersey: An Index, Based on Ratables..., compiled from tax lists for 1773 to 1774, 1778 to 1780, and 1784 to New Jersey Tax Lists, , which is alphabetical in four volumes, has names that are also included in search number 1 of the Accelerated Indexing Systems microfiche, available at most Family History Centers. New Mexico Spanish and Mexican censuses were taken in 1750, 1790, 1802, 1816, 1822, 1823, 1826, 1827, 1830, and Most have been published. North Dakota The North Dakota area was included in the following territorial censuses: 1836: Wisconsin Territory. 1840: Iowa Territory. 1850: Minnesota Territory. 1860, 1870, and 1885: Dakota Territory. Ohio There are no colonial censuses for Ohio. A territorial census was taken of Washington County (then part of the Northwest Territory), in Some territorial censuses exist for
6 Oklahoma The Oklahoma area was included in the 1860 Arkansas state census. It does not list Native Americans but lists other inhabitants. A special 1890 territorial census was also taken. Oregon The Oregon Territory was created in In 1850, an Oregon Territory census was taken. Territorial censuses were taken for some counties in 1842, 1843, 1845, 1849, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, and Pennsylvania No colonial censuses were taken. However, there is a 1780 census substitute, by John D. and Diane Stemmons, Pennsylvania in 1780: A Statewide Index of Circa 1780 Taxlists, with names from tax lists of eleven counties. Rhode Island There are Rhode Island colonial censuses for 1730, 1747 through 1755, 1774, 1776, 1777, and 1782 For 1730, see Rhode Island Roots, volume 7 (1981), pages and volume 10 (1984), page 8. This census exists only for Portsmouth and part of South Kingston. Other early censuses are: A Census of the Freemen of 1747 as Found in the Supplement to the Rhode Island Colonial Records. Census of the Inhabitants of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation, Rhode Island 1776 Military Census. The Rhode Island 1777 Military Census. Rhode Island 1782 Census. South Carolina No South Carolina colonial censuses have been preserved. However, many sources can be used as census substitutes, such as Citizens and Immigrants: South Carolina, South Dakota The South Dakota area was included in the following territorial censuses: 1836: Wisconsin Territory. 1840: Iowa Territory. 1850: Minnesota Territory to 1885: Dakota Territory. Tennessee There were no colonial censuses for Tennessee. However, there are some census substitutes such as the book Census of the Cumberland Settlements: Davidson, Sumner, Tennessee Counties (In What Is Now Tennessee). The names in this book were taken from tax lists. 6
7 Texas The Texas area is included in some Spanish censuses and mission rolls taken from 1782 to Several books contain names found in these censuses. Utah Utah took territorial censuses in 1850 (taken in 1851), 1852, 1856, 1860, 1870, and Vermont No colonial censuses were taken in Vermont. However, there are census substitutes, such as the book Vermont 1771 Census, which has names taken from several different sources.
