5 Audio Settings on Your Computer Clips Stored in SharePoint Audacity Software and Saving Your Audio File AUDIO SETTINGS ON YOUR COMPUTER: Check audio settings on computer 1. Double-click the Master Volume icon (looks like a speaker) on the Windows taskbar at the bottom-right of the desktop 2. When the Master Volume window opens, you will do two things: First, make sure that the MUTE ALL box does NOT have a checkmark in it Next, click OPTIONS on the menu bar and choose Properties. In the Properties window, click the RECORDING radial button to open the recording settings. If Microphone is not checked in those settings, check it so the microphone volume control will be on. Click OK. 3. Close the Master Volume window

Record by clicking on the RED record button and say, Hello, my name is. Then immediately click the GOLD stop button to stop the recording. 2. Listen to your recording by clicking the GREEN play button. Assess whether you need to speak louder or not and whether your diction needs to be clearer or not. 3. Delete the practice recording by clicking the x next to the Audio Track. 4. Leave Audacity open but minimize it.

7 Audacity Software and Saving Your Audio File FREE MUSIC CLIPS USING CLIPS STORED IN SHAREPOINT: To get your free music clips: 1. Open Internet Explorer browser and navigate to the TEACH 475 site 2. Click View All Site Content 3. Click the MUSIC FILES document library link to open it. 4. Hover over one of the files and click the downarrow that appears. Click on SEND TO and choose Download A Copy. Click the SAVE button and save it to your My Documents folder (you may wish to save it into My Music folder). 5. Repeat Step 4 for the second music clip 6. When finished downloading your music clips, browse to your own SharePoint site and then minimize the window.

Using the Wordle you created about a particular subject and using your knowledge of the writing process, create a 2-3 sentence script that highlights your topic. 2. Restore your Audacity window to record your script: Record yourself reading your script. Listen and assess voice (clarity, inflection, volume, etc). If need be, delete the track and re-record. Once you are satisfied with the recording, save the Project to your My Documents folder. To do this, click File on the Menu Bar and choose Save Project ; navigate to My Documents and click Save. (As you continue, click Save Project a few times to ensure that your work is saved.)

Now that you have your script recorded and your project saved, Add a music opening to your project. To do this, you will import the 10-second music clip that we downloaded earlier: On the Audacity menu bar, click Project and choose Import Audio. Navigate to My Documents and choose the music clip entitled Bladescape 10 that we downloaded earlier. Click the Open button. That sound track will immediately be added below your voice track in Audacity.

Since the audio files are stacked on top of each other, you need to move your voice recording track to follow the music track: You can manipulate the placement of the tracks by using the Time Shift Tool. To activate the Time Shift Tool, click the icon just below the Menu bar. Then move your voice track to the right so it will sound after the music track. When finished moving the track to where you want, click the Selection Tool icon to return to normal editing mode. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 again to create a musical ending to your podcast - except this time, you will move the imported music clip so it is after the voice track. In this way, you have music to begin and end your Podcast.

11 Audacity Software and Saving Your Audio File AUDACITY SOFTWARE RECORDING AND SAVING YOUR AUDIO FILE: 7. Use the Fade In and/or Fade Out Effects on your music tracks as needed. To use the effects, Click the Selection Tool and drag across the part of the track you want to fade. Then click Effect on the Menu Bar and choose either FADE IN or FADE OUT. 8. Listen and assess your entire audio file. (In the regular classroom, you could use peerediting.)

Once you are satisfied with your audio file, save the project again but keep Audacity open because your next step is to RENDER the file as an MP3 file so it can be used as a Podcast. To do this, go to File again on the Menu bar this time choose Export as MP3 and browse to where you wish to save it. NOTE: At this point, you MAY be prompted that you need the Lame_enc file to do this. If so, navigate to your c:\temp folder and choose the Lame-enc.dll file. Once it is loaded, you will be able to export as MP3.) Remember what you name the file and where you save it.

13 Audacity Software and Saving Your Audio File Making Your Audio File a Podcast MAKING YOUR AUDIO FILE A PODCAST USING SHAREPOINT: To make this audio file a Podcast, you must get it onto the Web and have it syndicated. To do this, you will upload it to your SharePoint classroom Site where it is automatically syndicated with RSS: 1. Restore your SharePoint site that you opened earlier. 2. Create a Document Library titled Podcasts. (Site Actions > Create > Document Library). 3. Change permissions as you wish on your new Podcasts Document Library. 4. Upload your audio file by clicking UPLOAD on the document library s task bar and browse to where you saved your mp3 audio file from Audacity.

14 Audacity Software and Saving Your Audio File Making Your Audio File a Podcast MAKING YOUR AUDIO FILE A PODCAST USING SHAREPOINT: Advertise your Podcasts and tell people how to RSS them: 1. On your classroom home page, add a hyperlink to your Podcasts document library. 2. your audience the URL of your Podcasts document library *NOTE: Be sure to inform your audience how to RSS your library--if they wish. (RSS = automatic notification when you add new podcasts to the library.) The little RSS chicklet should appear highlighted in the browser s top bar. If they click the chicklet and click SUBSCRIBE TO THIS FEED, they will be subscribed to your Podcasts RSS feed. IF the browser they are using does NOT have the RSS chicklet on the browser s top bar, people can open your Podcasts Document Library and click Actions on the tool bar. They can choose View RSS Feed and then click SUBSCRIBE TO THIS FEED.
