Summer Assignments Advanced Placement U.S. History (A.P.U.S.H.) Lemont High School: 2013/2014 school year Welcome to Advanced Placement United States History! For next school year you have chosen to pursue a challenging curriculum in United States History. The work is hard, the pay stinks; but the subject is awesome! This course will help prepare you to take the AP U.S. History Exam in May of 2014, as well as provide important pre-college scholarly experiences. By enrolling in this class it is assumed that you enjoy history, are prepared to invest time and effort into your schoolwork, and are willing to take on a rigorous program of studies. The time you spend inside and outside the classroom can be as boring or as interesting as you make it. But what is the Advanced Placement program? Advanced Placement (AP) is a program of college-level courses and exams that gives high school students the opportunity to receive advanced placement and/or credit in college. These courses meet a prescribed syllabus developed by the College Board. AP courses represent college level study and prepare students to take an examination in May. The AP examination is scored on a 1 to 5 basis. Scores of "3" or higher are considered "qualifying" scores by the College Board. Currently, more than 60 percent of the nation s high schools participate in AP. Most of the Nation s colleges and universities have an AP policy granting incoming students credit, placement, or both for qualifying AP exams. Colleges typically consider AP courses favorably when making admissions decisions. AP Examinations offer students the following benefits: The opportunity to sharpen academic skills, allowing them to enter college with the confidence that they can succeed Exemption by the college or university from introductory courses and permission to take higher-level courses, enabling students to move ahead in areas of interest An opportunity to demonstrate to colleges the ability to successfully pursue rigorous coursework Academic credit that can give them a head start in college Tuition savings a year or more of credit may be granted for a sufficient number of qualifying AP grades. Time to explore undergraduate subject areas that they wouldn t otherwise be able to study, and time to pursue internships or to study abroad. Eligibility for collegiate honors and other special programs open to students who have received AP recognition. What are the pros and cons of AP classes? PRO: Students have the opportunity to challenge themselves in a more demanding class. AP classes expose students to information that they might otherwise not encounter in high school.
Students who pass Advanced Placement exams may earn advanced standing or college credit when they enroll in a university. College and university admissions departments may look favorably on students who take more challenging programs. CON: AP classes have a significantly heavier work load and may increase student stress and minimize time for other activities. Taking multiple AP classes at the same time while engaging in extracurricular activities and/or employment in a part-time job is not recommended. What skills do I need to be successful in AP U.S. History? Good time management and organizational skills as well as a strong work ethic Willingness to ask questions and seek help when needed Strong reading, writing and analytical skill Ability to manage long-term projects rather than just short, daily assignments A strong interest in the subject matter Overall, 29% of all college students earn a bachelor's degree within four years. But 45% -- of students who take one AP Exam graduate on time from college 61% -- of students who take two or more AP Exams graduate on time from college Ultimately, this means that your teacher will work hard to prepare you for the AP exam that you will have to take in May. You will have to work hard and devote your energies in order to learn new ideas and skills, while hopefully having some fun along the way. Speaking of fun, this packet contains your AP U.S. History summer assignment. When school starts in August, we hit the ground running! It is important that everyone is on the same page and ready to work after the summer vacation. When you re tired of vacations to exotic locales, hanging out at the pool or beach, and going out with your friends, you can spend some quality time with United States History! All of the assignments listed in the packet must be completed over the summer and will be due on THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS. (Late work WILL NOT be accepted no excuses.) If you have any questions, ask a fellow classmate or your teacher. Our school addresses are: michaelp@lemont.k12.il.us danp@lemont.k12.il.us
As a first step in this AP class you will need to complete a summer assignment. The specifications are set forth below. GENERAL COMMENTS: 1) All work must be handwritten!!! (there is a reason for this) 2) Essays, outlines and document work will be turned in please write your responses on loose-leaf paper. 3) Suggested: a. Keep all vocabulary in its own spiral and have a second notebook for classroom notes. Hint there will be lots of handouts!! b. Have a binder for any/all handouts and returned homework. Divide the binder into: [1] Homework [2] Packets [3] Outlines and timelines Also -- keep the various handouts together in chronological order. 4) Whatever you do, DO NOT wait until the end of the summer to start this. There is a lot of work here and if you do a little every week/day, then this will be a much more manageable task. Assignment #1: Memorize the 15 total historical time periods including the name of the era/period and the dates that are linked to them. It would be a good idea to connect the presidents to the era they were executive in. Assignment #2: Know all 44 U.S. Presidents!! Yes, we want you to memorize all 44 U.S. Presidents in order. In addition, you must memorize the dates that they were in office, as well as under what political party they were elected. For example, George Washington (None) ; John Adams (Federalist) ; Thomas Jefferson (Democratic-Republican) , and so on. (Note: the start date for the Presidents is based on when they actually take position of office.) There, you have the first three so only 41 more to go!
On the first day of class you will have a quiz on the U.S. Presidents. You need to memorize the U.S. Presidents in chronological order. So, why do you have to memorize all of the U.S. Presidents? Because we are mean and evil? We think you have too much free time? No on both accounts. By knowing all of the Presidents and eras at the start of the school year, it will make it that much easier for you to focus on the issues that each of these leaders faced. The mental knowledge of knowing the presidents will provide a framework for additional concepts and topics. So in building our body of U.S. History, the presidents and eras are the initial skeleton, and events, issues and concepts like the Embargo Act (Jefferson), the Trail of Tears (Jackson), or the League of Nations (Wilson) are the sinew, organs and skin. In other words, you will be a little bit ahead of the game and will do that much better on the AP exam in May!!! The U.S. President handout will greatly help here... it is included in this packet. We will give you handouts to complete the summer assignments, but feel free to use the following Web site to help complete the work. Nice, short video clips on various historical topics. Look to the left side of the page and click on either AP U.S. History I or AP U.S. History II. Great site to explore. Has all things history. During the school year we will heavily use the hearts multiple choice page. Online dictionary. Very helpful for looking up unfamiliar words and terms. If you still can t seem to find an answer, we recommend using the following search engines: google.com dogpile.com yahoo.com Otherwise, have a great summer and we will see you in August! Mr. Pryor & Mr. Priestley Again our school addresses are michaelp@lemont.k12.il.us danp@lemont.k12.il.us

When that party broke apart after 1868, he returned to the Democratic Party. 7. Johnson was not a professed church member, but he admired the principles of Baptist church. 8.
