TWO TYPES OF ELECTRIC CAR BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) A BEV is a fully electric car that never uses gas. BMW i3* Ford Focus Electric Kia Soul EV Mitsubishi i-miev Nissan LEAF smart fortwo Electric Tesla Model S PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) A PHEV uses both electricity and gas. It has a small battery pack for short all-electric driving distances. When the battery is empty, the gas engine turns on for longer driving distances. Models available in Canada include: BMW i3* BMW i8 Cadillac ELR Chevrolet VOLT Ford C-Max Energi Ford Fusion Energi Porsche Panamera S E Hybrid Toyota Prius Plug-in * The BMW i3 can be purchased with a range-extending gasoline engine. 4 PAGE plugndrive.ca
SAVE BIG ON FUEL COSTS The cost of buying a new car isn t just in the price tag, you also need to factor-in the cost of ownership. Because electric cars use electricity instead of gas, you can save thousands of dollars per year on fuel costs. Average Cost to Drive 100km* BEV $2.75 PHEV $4.68 Compact/Station Wagon $12.90 Subcompact/Mid-Size $13.91 Full-Size $15.88 Mini Van/SUV $16.45 Pickup Truck $18.10 *Numbers calculated using NRCan s 2014 fuel efficiency figures, $1.00 per litre of gasoline and off-peak electricity pricing in Ontario as of February 17, 2015.
REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT Ontario s cars and trucks burn more than 16 billion litres of gasoline each year and emit more than 37 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into the atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels reduces air quality and produces greenhouse gas emissions. Released into our atmosphere, these GHGs are contributing to climate change, extreme weather events and health problems. Most of the CO 2 emissions associated with your electric car are from the generation of electricity. By switching to an electric car you can reduce your CO 2 emissions by as much as 5,000 kg per year, or, about 90%. This is especially true when the electricity used to charge your car s battery comes from low-emitting energy sources, such as nuclear and hydro, as is the case in Ontario. 6 PAGE plugndrive.ca
AVERAGE EMISSIONS (KG) OF CO 2 /100KM TRIP* BEV 1.2 kg PHEV 8.1 kg Compact/Station Wagon 30.4 kg Subcompact & Midsize 32.7 kg Full Size 37.3 kg Mini Van & SUV 38.7 kg Pickup Truck 42.5 kg *All figures are based on NRCan Fuel Efficiency figures for 2014, assuming 100 km of driving and charging during off-peak hours at night or on weekends. BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle)
S A V E WIT H P R O VINC IAL INCENTIVE S ON YOUR NEXT ELECTRIC CAR PURCHASE The Government of Ontario offers an incentive of up to $8,500 off the cost of a new electric vehicle (EV) and up to $1,000 off the cost of buying and installing a charging station. - Drivers are also eligible for a green license plate which allows them to use high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes even with one person in the car until June PAGE plugndrive.ca
VEHICLE I N CENTIVE PROGRA M The EV Incentive Program applies to new highway capable plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) or full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) purchased on or after July 1, The value of the incentive is based on the vehicle s battery capacity and ranges from $5,000 to $8,500. The value of the incentive for leased vehicles is scaled to the term of the lease (a minimum term of 36 months is required for the full incentive). CHARGER I N CENTIVE PROGRA M Any individual, business, municipality or non-profit organization that has purchased an EV and received an incentive under the Electric Vehicle Incentive Program can also apply for the charging station incentive. The incentive covers 50% of the purchase and 50% of the installation costs for a Level 2 (208V or 240V) charging station, up to a maximum of $1,000. 46 KNOW THE FACTS Q. HOW DO I CHARGE MY ELECTRIC CAR? A. Electric cars charge their batteries by plugging into the electricity grid. Most people charge at home overnight when it s most convenient and the cost of electricity is lowest. All electric cars come with a cordset in the trunk that can be used to plug into a regular wall outlet (Level 1). However, most electric car drivers choose to install a 240V (Level 2) charging station that can fully charge their car s battery in 4-6 hours. Remember that you won t usually come home empty, so less time is usually needed. Q. HOW DO I GET A CHARGING STATION FOR MY HOUSE? A. There are many charging stations from leading manufacturers available through Plug n Drive s online store Charge My Car. Plug n Drive can also help arrange to have a licensed electrical contractor provide you with a quote and install the station in your garage or driveway. Visit chargemycar.ca to choose, buy and install your charger. Q. HOW DO I GET A CHARGING STATION FOR MY CONDO OR APARTMENT BUILDING? A. At this point in time, the best thing to do is contact your condo board or property management office to express your interest in installing a charging station and go from there. Plug n Drive is happy to assist in any we can throughout the process. For more information, visit plugndrive.ca/condo. 44 PAGE plugndrive.ca
FOR MORE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS VISIT PLUGNDRIVE.CA/FAQS Q. HOW DO ELECTRIC CARS BENEFIT THE ECONOMY? A. Most electricity is made inside the Province where you re using it. Gasoline, on the other hand, is usually imported from elsewhere. By switching to an electric car your money is helping to support local infrastructure and create local jobs. Q. HOW FAR CAN I DRIVE? A. That depends on the model. Full electric cars can travel anywhere between 100 km and 450 km on a full charge. Plug-in hybrid electric cars have an all electric driving range between 20 km and 60 km with range-extended gas engines that can travel between 500 km and 900 km. Q. HOW LONG DO THE BATTERIES LAST? A. The auto makers provide an 8 to 10 year warranty on the battery, although current predictions are that the batteries will last longer than that. At the end of the car s life the battery still has value. A number of emerging companies are looking at used electric car batteries for energy storage and emergency back-up power. Q. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO DRIVE AN ELECTRIC CAR? A. The cost to drive an electric car depends on the size of the battery pack, what time of day you charge and how far you are driving. Typically, a pure electric car is less expensive to drive than a plug-in hybrid because pure electric cars don t use gasoline. You can save more than $2,000 per year if you replace your gas car with a pure electric car.
