1 Environmental Issues Facing Frederick County Walkersville High School Environmental Club
2 Growth Frederick county had a 13% population increase from 2000 to 2005, 7.3% higher than Maryland s population increase. (U.S. Census Bureau) As of 2000, the population density of Frederick County is persons per square mile, Maryland s is persons per square mile. Urban sprawl is the rapid and expansive growth of a greater metropolitan area, traditionally suburbs over a large area. (Wikipedia.org) Sprawl destroys more than two million acres of parks, farms and open space each year. (Sierra Club) Smart growth advocates land use patterns that are compact, transit-oriented, walkable, bicycle-friendly and include mixed use development with a range of housing choices. (Wikipedia.org) Frederick County Public Schools have increased their enrollment by 6,843 students since 1995
3 In 1999, the U.S. generated million tons of municipal solid waste. This is more than double the rate in 1960 (88.1 million tons) (Frederick County Solid Waste Management Plan) Per capita generation in the U.S. has grown from 2.6 pounds per person per day in 1960 to 4.6 pounds per person per day in (Frederick County Solid Waste Management Plan) Frederick County recycles aluminum/steel, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, paper and cardboard. Additional items accepted for recycling at the Reich s Ford Road drop-off center include: motor oil, antifreeze, car batteries, scrap metal, yard trimmings and flexible foam. (Frederick County Recycling Office) Waste It is estimated that by 2012, Frederick County residents will be discarding 900 tons of trash a day. (Frederick News Post) Possible solutions for trash accumulation include incineration, increased recycling and composting, and expansion of landfill. Proponents of incineration say that it would reduce strain on the landfill and produce renewable energy. Opponents argue that it would be extremely expensive, discourage recycling and would release harmful dioxins to the air. (Frederick News Post, Greenpeace.org)
4 Global Warming Carbon Dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. By burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth s atmosphere and temperatures are rising.(climatecrisis.net) Signs of global warming: The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years. (Nature) Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level (World Health Organization) The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade. (Geophysical Research Letters) At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, moving closer to the poles. (Nature)
5 Global Warming Our future if trends continue: Deaths from global warming will double in just 25 years -- to 300,000 people a year. (World Health Organization) Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica, devastating coastal areas worldwide (Washington Post) Heat waves, drought and wildfires will be more frequent and intense. (Climatecrisis.net) The Arctic Ocean could be ice free in summer by 2050 (Arctic Climate Impact Assessment) More than a million species worldwide could be driven to extinction by (Time Magazine)
6 Natural Resources Agriculture Frederick County s agricultural base covers more than 195,000 acres of farmland. (Frederick County Office of Economic Development) Frederick County is the largest agricultural county in Maryland, accounting for 10% of Maryland s total farmland (Frederick County Office of Economic Development) As of July 2006, 41,635 acres of land are preserved in Frederick County Land Preservation Program ( facts.htm)
7 Water Wildlife Natural Resources There are 1,434 miles of stream in Frederick County ( Frederick County has been able to walk and assess physical conditions of 476 miles (33%) through the Stream Corridor Assessment ( The Monocacy River is the largest tributary to the Potomac River. 75% of the land included in the watershed is located within Maryland and 56% of this land is located within Frederick County. ( Catoctin Mountain Park is 5,810 acres and home to over 280 species of animals including: squirrels, chipmunks, white-tailed deer, woodpeckers, wild turkey, box turtles, black bears and native brook trout. (National Park Service) Also in Frederick County are Cunningham Falls State Park and Gambrill State Park Greenways are protected natural corridors to connect open spaces (wildlife should not be constricted to certain designated areas) (
