2 Some tips for setting goals with a Growth Mindset in mind Express the goals positively. Be specific and concise. Keep the goals small and achievable. Adjust a goal if it is not working or failing. Focus on effort, struggle, persistence - commit to working hard. Choose some difficult tasks as well - challenge yourself. Focus on the strategies needed to help you achieve your goal. Remember to reflect on what strategies do and don t work for you. The focus of your goals should be learning and improvement! Before your interview Review your last report and reflect on your results. Review your previous goals from Goal Setting Day (Year 8-11 students) - you can find these in your portal in Sentral. Bring your a hard copy of your report along to your interview. Think of some achievable academic goals you can set yourself this year - aim for three. Think of at least one goal to help you contribute to the community of Marist North Shore. Know Your Present Position Before you can set a goal, you need to know where you are at the moment. It s like setting out on a journey. You need to know where you are starting from before you can plan your route. If you re setting yourself a goal in Chemistry, it is important to know what your present understanding of Chemistry is, and what your previous efforts have been in the subject. Knowing your present position gives you a base from which to start. Student Action Plan 1. Identify Each Goal Write It Down What do you want to achieve? Write each goal down as a positive, specific statement. Goal: To achieve higher results in my upcoming History test. Not: To try to get a good result in my history test. 2

3 2. List the Benefits of Achieving Each Goal If you can t see the benefits, you won t succeed. Benefits: A real sense of satisfaction. Proving that I can achieve as well as my sister. 3. List the Skills, Knowledge and Help You Will Need Skills: Essay-writing skills; knowledge of the topics; advice from Mrs. B. on using my time better in the exam. 4. List Any Obstacles to Achieving Each Goal Obstacles: Have I enough time to revise thoroughly? I ve got to fit in three school and rep. soccer practices next week, and two weekend games. 5. Work Out Solutions to the Obstacles Solutions: Prioritise work out a special study plan for the next two weeks. Use Friday night instead of going to the movies, and Saturday morning instead of sleeping in late! 6. Set a Specific Completion Date for Each Goal Completion: Finish basic revision by Sunday 8.00 pm. Exam Tuesday am. 7. Begin Do It NOW! Examples of strategies to help you achieve your goals: Homework - Attend Study in the Academic Resource Centre Monday to Wednesday afternoons OR go to Open Classroom during lunchtimes. Organise a study/homework grid for home to help manage assessment tasks and exam preparation Prioritise - What needs to be done first? Set apart a place for study -This should be private, free from noise (unless collaborating/group study) and other distractions. Use the library or stay at school regularly. Study group Work collaboratively with other students. Set apart some time - Perhaps six days a week - for study. Make a weekly study plan - Revise your work constantly and plan for submission of reports and assignments that may involve several days of work. Research shows that studying in minute blocks is more effective than trying to study for hours without a break. If studying a language which requires high levels of focus, you may study for even shorter blocks. See the examples of real MCNS study plans below. If focusing is hard for you, start with ten minutes of revision of what you learnt that day and slowly build up to minute blocks. 3

4 Draw up a daily schedule. Use your diary and stick to it Calendar: Use Google Calendar to set assessment reminders on your laptop and mobile phone (if you have one). Keep up to date with your studies - Revise your notes constantly as new topics often require an understanding of earlier work. Create study notes in different forms - diagrams, mindmaps, summaries, flash cards... Work through examples and draft when writing - This often helps you highlight where an additional effort needs to be made. Ask your teacher for feedback on your drafts. Work through past exam papers if possible - and get teacher feedback to help you improve. Get more feedback in general ask for feedback from your teachers - through Google or at another arranged time. Revise notes constantly. Break things down into chunks. Highlight key words and phrases. Reward yourself when you reach a goal (short term or long term) - eat a treat, go to a movie...
