1 Planning Your Space A step-by-step guide to creating a Floor plan and arranging your furniture STORES CATALOG USA

2 Welcome Whether you are redecorating, rearranging or refreshing a room, it s a good idea to take time and map out the room as a whole to help you visualize the end result. This guide will provide you with simple instructions on how to plan your space.you will learn how to measure your room, map out a floor plan, and arrange your furniture to find the best design for your lifestyle. 3 Create A Floor Plan A floor plan is a view of your room drawn to scale. Creating one will help you visualize your space and determine the best furniture arrangement for it. 1. You will need a pencil, ruler, scratch paper, and a metal tape measure. 2. Sketch a rough outline of the room including wall, window, and door placements. Don t worry about dimensions at this point. Use this outline to note all your measurements before drawing a floor plan to scale. 3. Measure your room from wall to wall. Measure doors, windows, and any other architectural features such as a fireplace from the outside trim. Indicate whether doors open in or out. Measure window heights, as well as the distance from the floor to outer trim of each window as you might want to put a console or bookshelves below. 4. Measure the main ceiling height. Measure and note any archways or other architectural features that may interfere with moving furniture into the space. 5. Use your measurements to draw the room s perimeter on the worksheet provided. Note that each square on the grid represents one foot (1') or twelve inches (12"). Refer to the example on the next page. 6. Mark all electrical outlets with an X, all switches with an S, and all heating vents with an H.

6 Arrange Your Furniture Now that you have a finished floor plan, it's time to arrange the furniture.this is easily done by drawing in each piece or cutting out scaled furniture templates as outlined below. 1. Measure and note the length and width of each furniture piece you already own. 2. Note lengths and widths of furniture pieces you are considering. Dimensions can be found on our Furniture Collection Cards and at 3. You can draw each furniture piece to scale on your finished floor plan, or for more flexibility cut out scaled furniture templates on graph paper and rearrange them on the floor plan until you are satisfied with the layout. Whether drawing or creating cut-outs, use the same scale where one grid square is the equivalent of one foot or twelve inches.to convert inches to grid squares, divide the number of actual inches by twelve. For example, 83 inches divided by 12 equals 6.9 grid squares. 4. Write the name of the furniture piece you have selected on each drawing or cut-out (e.g. PB Basic Sofa ). 5. You may wish to color each furniture piece to visualize how color is mixed throughout the room.

7 Design Tips Think carefully about the how the room will be used and who will be using it. If the room will be used for entertaining, plan for extra seating. If the home office will also be used as an occasional guest bedroom, consider a day bed or sleeper sofa. Identify a focal point, such as a fireplace, television or a window with a view. Place your furniture to draw attention to it. Separate a large room into several areas for reading, conversation, and dining.this can be accomplished with distinct furniture groupings and area rugs. Arrange the main piece first (the bed in the bedroom), then related furniture (bedside tables), and finally the secondary pieces (reading chair and side table, dresser). Keep traffic patterns in mind. Leave at least 2' for walkways. Avoid forcing traffic through conversational spaces if possible. Consider the balance of the furniture. Keep pieces of similar scale together. A large coffee table would look better in front of a sofa than a small love seat. Balance large pieces such as a sofa with either another large feature or with several smaller items, such as two small armchairs.to add visual interest, combine linear with round pieces and tall with short pieces. To encourage conversation, place chairs and sofas within 8' of each other.think about placing tables next to seating for food and drinks. A small space may require furniture with storage and versatility, such as a media cabinet with shelves, an ottoman at the foot of a bed, or a dining table with extensions. The distance between a television and the seating should be three times the size of the screen. For example, to watch TV on a 27" screen comfortably, you should sit 71" away from it. Allow 14" to 18" between a coffee table and the front of the sofa. Plan at least 24" of clear space behind dining and desk chairs (measured assuming someone is seated). Allow sufficient space in front of dressers and console to allow doors and drawers to be opened easily. You may want to position newspaper in the room itself, representing each furniture piece in actual size, to see how your layout will impact the traffic flow. Before purchasing any large pieces of furniture, make sure the item will fit through all doors and entryways, elevators, and staircases.
