7 The basics you need to know Moving around in AirLife Your AirLife gives you the freedom to choose how you want to navigate. Touch Using the touch screen, you can open an application with a quick touch on its icon on the Shortcut Strip, on the Home screen, or in the App Drawer. Also, you can long touch (touch and hold) an item and move it around. Type Use the keyboard when you type text such as a web address, or . Press the MENU key to open a context-sensitive menu. Trackpad In addition to the touch screen, if you prefer, you can use the trackpad to control the onscreen cursor. To click on an item, press the trackpad. Note: The screenshots and keyboards in this guide may vary by country. 9

8 Personalize your Home screen Your Home screen is a place that you can make your own. And you have plenty of space flick left or right to view more of your Home screen. You can change the background and add your favorite shortcuts. Also, you can add widgets, such as a clock or calendar. To personalize your Home screen, long touch the Home screen on an empty space. Add a shortcut to your Home screen. Add a widget such as a clock or a picture frame to your Home screen. Add a file folder to your Home screen. Personalize your Home screen with new wallpaper. Tip: To move items around on your Home screen, long touch the item, and then drag it to the desired location. To remove an item from your Home screen, long touch the item, and then drag it onto the trash icon on the App Drawer tab. 10

9 Home screen menu On the Home screen, press MENU on the keyboard to view the following options: Add Add shortcuts, widgets, folders, or another wallpaper to your Home screen. Wallpaper Change your Home screen picture. Search Search the web or music on your AirLife using Google. Notifications View current notifications such as new , instant messages, or status icons. Settings View and change the settings such as wireless controls, sound, display, date and time, and more. 11

10 The things you can do Your AirLife includes tools that help you connect with your friends. Learn how to browse the Internet and access your favorite social networking sites, communicate with your friends, play your music, take and view photos, and keep track of your contacts as well as your appointments. When you initially powered up your AirLife, you had the option to set up your account. If you have not done that already, see Set up accounts on page 13. Send an 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch . If you are on the Your accounts screen, touch the account that you want to use. Tip: On the Shortcut Strip, touch for even faster access. 2. On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch Compose. 3. In the To box, type an address. 4. In the Subject box, type a subject. In the Compose Mail box, type the message. 5. Touch Send. Note: To add an attachment, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Add attachment. 12

11 Set up accounts 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch Add account. Or, if your inbox is displayed from a previously added account, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Accounts. Next, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Add account. 3. Type your address and password, and then touch Next. Note: If you prefer to manually set up your account, touch Manual setup after you type your address and password. 4. Type your account name and display name, and then touch Done. 13

12 Browsing the web Get the full web experience with the browser included with your AirLife. You can zoom in or out, and use your finger to navigate. Open a web page 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Browser. Tip: On the Shortcut Strip, touch Browser for even faster access. 2. Touch the address bar, type a web address, and then touch Go. Note: To open a link on a web page, touch the link. Add a bookmark 1. While in the browser, touch. 2. In the Bookmark window, if you prefer to change the bookmark name, type a new bookmark name in the Name box. 3. Touch OK. Note: In the browser, to view the bookmark list, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Bookmark. 14

13 Browser controls Zoom in or out using the zoom slider. Refresh or stop loading a web page. Bookmark your favorite web pages. Open a new browser tab. Add a social networking site bookmark to the Home screen 1. Long touch the Home screen, touch Shortcuts, and then touch Bookmark. 2. In the Bookmarks list, touch your favorite social networking site. 15

14 Instant messaging Add IM accounts 1. Open the App Drawer, touch ebuddy, and then touch Create ebuddy ID. If you already have an ebuddy account, touch I have an ebuddy ID. 2. On the Create ebuddy ID screen, fill in the information, and then touch Sign up. 3. In the Add account window, select your IM account. 4. Type your username and password, and then touch Add account. 5. To add additional accounts, touch the Accounts tab, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Add account. Send an instant message 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch ebuddy. 2. Type your ebuddy ID and password, and then touch Login. Note: If you want to automatically login to ebuddy, touch Auto login. 3. Touch the Buddies tab, and then touch an IM contact. 4. On the bottom of the screen, touch Start chatting here, type a message, and then touch Send. Note: To sign out of ebuddy, in the Buddies tab, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Logout. 16

15 Text and multimedia messaging Send a text message 1. Open the App Drawer, touch Messaging, and then touch New Message. 2. In the To box, type contact names or phone numbers separated by a comma. 3. Touch the Type to compose box, type your message, and then touch Send. Send a multimedia message (MMS) 1. Open the App Drawer, touch Messaging, and then touch New Message. 2. In the To box, type contact names or phone numbers separated by a comma. 3. On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch Attach. Attach a picture or video. If you prefer, you can touch Capture picture or Capture video, and then attach the photo or video to your message. 4. Touch the Type to compose box, type your message, and then touch Send. Note: To send a text or multimedia message, your AirLife must have a cellular network connection indicated by the signal strength icon. You cannot send a text message or multimedia message over Wi-Fi. Note: MMS is not supported in all regions. 17

16 Music Transfer music with an SD card 1. Insert an SD card into your PC and copy music files onto the SD card. 2. Remove the SD card from your PC and insert it into your AirLife. 3. On the SD Card Inserted menu, touch Launch Music Player. 4. On the keyboard, press MENU, touch Locations, and then touch SD Card. 5. On the keyboard, press MENU, touch Select, and then touch Select All or touch individual songs. 6. Touch Transfer, and then select Internal Storage. Note: If you want to transfer music to your remote web account, touch Cloud Storage. If you do not have a remote account set up on your AirLife, see Storage on the web on page On the Transfer dialog box, if you do not want the original files on the SD card deleted, uncheck the Delete Original check box. Touch OK. 8. Before you remove the SD card from your AirLife, you need to unmount it. On the Home screen, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Settings. Touch SD card & storage, and then touch Unmount SD card. You can now safely remove the SD card. Note: Your AirLife supports up to 32 GB SD cards. 18

17 Import an itunes playlist from your PC 1. On your PC, download and install the Playlist Importer at: 2. Connect your AirLife to your PC using the USB cable. 3. On your AirLife, on the Home screen, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Notifications. 4. Touch USB connected, and then touch Mount. 5. On your PC, open the Playlist Importer, and then select the playlists you prefer to add to your AirLife. 6. On your PC, in the Transfer To list, select the location where you want to transfer music files: Internal Memory or SD Card, and then click Transfer. 7. After the transfer is complete, on your AirLife, press MENU on the keyboard, touch Notifications, touch Turn off USB storage, and then touch Turn Off. 8. Unplug the USB cable from your AirLife and PC. To view the imported playlist on your AirLife, open the App Drawer, and then touch Music. 18 Listen to music The Music application includes a music list view and a music player view. When you initially open the Music application, you are in the music list view. The music player opens when you play a song or multiple songs. While you are listening to music, you can go back to your Home screen by pressing the Home key. The music will continue to play while you browse the Internet or do other tasks on your AirLife. Tip: To return to the Music application from any screen, press and hold the Home key, and then touch Music. Play a song 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Music. 2. Touch a song. Control volume On the keyboard, press the volume up key, volume down key, or mute key. Go to previous or next song In the music player view, touch or. Rewind or fast forward Long touch the song title, and then drag your finger left or right. Shuffle songs In the music player view, touch. Play songs sequentially in a continuous loop In the music player view, touch. 20

19 Choose a music list view 1. In the music list view, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Views. Note: The music list view is the default view when you open the Music application. 2. In the Views list, touch a preferred view. Create a playlist You can create one or more playlists from the main music view. 1. In the music list view, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Select. 2. Touch the songs you wish to add to the playlist. 3. Touch Add to Touch New Playlist, type a playlist name, and then touch OK. Tip: To view all playlists in music list view, press MENU on the keyboard, touch Views, and then touch Playlists. 21

20 Pictures and videos You can take photos and videos with your AirLife and share them on the web. You can also copy existing pictures and videos from a digital camera or your PC. Take a self portrait 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Self Portrait. 2. To set the timer, touch 3 seconds or 10 seconds. The timer counts down, and then your photo is taken. 3. To view the photo, open the App Drawer, touch Photo, and then touch the photo you want to see. Record a video 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Camcorder. 2. To start recording, press. To stop recording, press. Note: When you press the record button to start recording, it automatically changes to the stop button. 3. To view your video, touch PLAY. To retake the video, touch RETAKE. 4. To save your video, press OK. 5. To view the video, open the App Drawer, touch Photo, and then touch the video clip you want to see. Note: To delete photos or videos, open the App Drawer, and then touch Photo. On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch Select. Select the photos or videos, and then touch Delete. 22

21 Transfer pictures or videos You can use an SD card to copy pictures and videos from your digital camera or PC onto your AirLife. Once you copy the photos or videos, you can send them to friends or upload them to your favorite social networking site. You can also connect your AirLife to your PC via the USB cable and copy pictures or videos from your PC to your AirLife. Note: You cannot connect your digital camera directly to your AirLife. You must remove the SD card from your digital camera, and then insert it into your AirLife. Transfer pictures and video with an SD card 1. Insert an SD card from a digital camera or insert an SD card containing photos or videos that you have copied from your PC. 2. On the SD Card Inserted menu, touch Import Photo/Video. 3. On the Select Media Files screen, touch the pictures or videos you want to import. 4. Touch Transfer, and then select Internal Storage. Note: If you want to transfer pictures or video to your remote web account, touch Cloud Storage. If you do not have a remote account set up on your AirLife, see Storage on the web on page On the Transfer dialog box, if you do not want the original files on the SD card deleted, uncheck the Delete Original check box. Touch OK. 6. Before you remove the SD card from your AirLife, you need to unmount it. On the Home screen, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Settings. Touch SD Card & Storage, and then touch Unmount SD card. You can now safely remove the SD card. Note: Your AirLife supports up to 32 GB SD cards. 23

22 Transfer pictures and videos from your PC with the USB cable 1. Connect your AirLife to your PC using the USB cable. 2. On your AirLife, on the Home screen, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Notifications. Touch USB connected, and then touch Mount. 3. On your PC, your AirLife is now displayed as a removable drive. Copy pictures and videos from your PC to a folder on your AirLife. 4. After you are done copying the pictures and videos, on your AirLife, on the Home screen, press MENU on the keyboard, touch Notifications, touch Turn off USB storage, and then touch Turn Off. 5. Unplug the USB cable from your AirLife and PC. View photos and videos Open the App Drawer, and then touch Photo. View thumbnails of your pictures and videos. Flip through your pictures. View your pictures in chronological order and view pictures taken during a specific date range. To select a range, touch and drag the blue range bar left or right. Next, to expand the range, touch and drag the left or right arrow. To view only those images within the range, touch. Open this Start menu to access My Gallery, SD Card, Take Photo, Record Video, and Settings. Note: Press the MENU key on the keyboard to see more options. 24

23 Contacts You can create new contacts or import contacts from a SIM card. Also, you can add a photo to a contact. Create a contact 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Contacts. 2. On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch New contact. 3. Type the new contact information, and then touch Done. Import contacts from a SIM card 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Contacts. 2. On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch Import contacts. 3. To import all SIM contacts, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Import all. To import a single contact, touch the contact, scroll down, and then touch Done. 25

24 Add a photo to a contact 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Contacts. 2. Touch a contact, and then touch Edit contact. 3. Touch Add icon, and then touch a photo. 4. Touch and drag the orange window to select the desired area of the photo, touch Save, and then touch Done. The photo is added to your contact. 26

25 Calendar Remind yourself of important upcoming events like birthdays, parties, and exams. Schedule an event 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Calendar. 2. On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch New Event. 3. In the Event name box, type an event name. Note: If the event is all day, touch the All day check box. 4. To set the event start time, touch the date in the From section, select a date, and then touch Set. Touch the time, select a time, and then touch Set. 5. To set the event end time, in the To section, repeat step If you prefer to set a reminder, in the Reminders section, touch Add reminder. 7. Complete the remaining details for the event, and then touch Done. 27

26 View documents with Quickoffice Quickoffice allows you to open and read Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF documents. When you zoom in or out, documents are automatically resized so that you do not have to scroll from left to right. 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Quickoffice. 2. Touch Internal Storage, SD Card, or Recent Documents. 3. To open a document, touch a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF document. 28

27 View and organize files and folders The files stored on your AirLife can be viewed and organized using File Manager. Access files and folders 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch File Manager. 2. Touch Internal Storage, SD card, Recent Documents, or a web storage service. Create a folder 1. In File Manager, press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Create Folder. 2. In the New folder name box, enter a folder name, and then touch Create. Edit a folder or file 1. Long touch the folder or file name. 2. Select one of the following options: Select Rename Delete Copy Cut Properties Tip: To paste a folder or file that you have copied or cut, go to the location where you want to paste the folder or file. On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch Paste. 29

28 Navigate with GPS using NDrive Using NDrive, you can get directions or find your favorite restaurant or store. Enable GPS Press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Settings. Touch Location, and then touch the Enable GPS satellites check box. Get directions 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch NDrive. 2. Touch Menu, touch Navigate, and then touch Address. 3. In the Town box, type a town. As you type, a list of towns appears. Touch the desired town. 4. In the Street box, type the street. As you type, a list of streets appears. Touch the desired street. 5. In the House Number box, type the house or building number, and then touch Ok. Note: Turn off GPS when you don t need it to conserve battery power. On the Home screen, press MENU on the keyboard, touch Settings, and then touch Location. Touch Enable GPS satellites to clear the check box. 30

29 Storage on the web If you already have an account with Google Docs, Box.net, or MobileMe, you can easily connect to these services from your AirLife and upload or download files. Connect 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch File Manager. 2. On the keyboard, press MENU, and then touch Add remote account. 3. Touch Google docs, box, or MobileMe. 4. Enter the address and password associated with the account, and then touch OK. An icon for the web storage service is displayed in the File Manager. Copy from the web storage 1. Open the App Drawer, and then touch File Manager. 2. Touch the web storage service. 3. Long touch a file, and then touch Copy. 4. On the keyboard, press the Back key several times until the File Manager main screen opens. 5. Touch Internal Storage or SD Card, and browse to the location where you wish to copy the file. Press MENU on the keyboard, and then touch Paste. To copy files from your AirLife to a web storage service, copy a file on your AirLife, and then paste it into the desired web storage location. 31

30 Backup and restore your AirLife You can backup files and applications on your AirLife by creating one single backup file that you can save to an SD card. Such a backup file will allow you to restore your AirLife in case of need. Backup 1. Insert an SD card into your AirLife. On the SD Card Inserted menu, touch Do Nothing. 2. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Backup. 3. Type a name for the backup, and then touch OK. 4. The default backup settings include documents, settings, and applications. To add or subtract optional backup items, you can touch Pictures, Music, or Videos. 5. To change how often you receive a notification to remind you to backup your AirLife, touch and slide the Reminder interval bar. 6. The first time you backup your AirLife, touch Create Archive. For each additional backup, touch Start Backup. Restore 1. Insert the SD card that contains the backup file. On the SD Card Inserted menu, touch Do Nothing. 2. Open the App Drawer, and then touch Backup. 3. Touch the Restore tab, touch the backup name, and then touch Start Restore. Important: When you restore a backup file, all installed applications, pictures, music, and video files on your AirLife will be deleted and replaced with the contents of the backup file. 32

31 Your Internet connection Your AirLife can connect to the Internet using a cellular network or a Wi-Fi network. When you are in range of a cellular network, your AirLife is automatically connected. When you want to use Wi-Fi, turn on Wi-Fi and select a network such as your home Wi-Fi network. Some Wi-Fi networks may require configuration on the initial connection and will automatically connect the next time you turn on Wi-Fi. Differences between Wi-Fi and cellular network Internet connections: Wi-Fi provides a high-speed Internet connection and allows you to quickly download web pages and other web content. You can connect your AirLife to your home Wi-Fi network or to Wi-Fi hot spots located in public locations or businesses such as a coffee shop. Your cellular network connection provides you with a seamless, automatic connection and broad coverage. You can connect to the Internet in locations that do not offer Wi-Fi hot spots. 33

32 Connect manually to Wi-Fi If your AirLife does not automatically connect to a Wi-Fi network, or you want to connect to a specific Wi-Fi network, follow the steps below. 1. Open the App Drawer, touch Settings, touch Wireless controls, and then touch Wi-Fi settings. 2. To turn on Wi-Fi, touch the Wi-Fi check box. A list of available Wi-Fi networks is displayed. 3. Touch the desired Wi-Fi network name, and then touch Connect. Note: If Open network is displayed next to the network name, a password is not required. If Secured with WEP or Secured with WPA is displayed, type a password before you touch Connect. When you are connected to the Wi-Fi network, the Wi-Fi icon is displayed on the top of your screen. Note: To disconnect from the Wi-Fi network, open the App Drawer, touch Settings, touch Wireless controls, and then touch the Wi-Fi check box. 34

34 Get applications You can download additional software for your AirLife such as games and other applications. Open the App Drawer, touch the online store solution (for example, mstore), and then browse the available applications. Note: The application store software installed on AirLife varies by region. Important: Please create a backup of your downloaded applications after installation is complete. Depending on the online store s download/support mechanism, if you need to reinstall applications from the online store (for instance after a factory restore of the device), and you do not have a backup, you may have to purchase and download the applications again.
