2 Greetings From The Chair State Representative Sylvester Turner Rep. Alma Allen Rep. Nicole Collier Rep. Garnet Coleman Rep. Yvonne Davis Rep. Joe Deshotel Rep. Dawnna Dukes Rep. Harold V. Dutton Jr. Rep. Helen Giddings Rep. Eric Johnson Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon Rep. Borris Miles Rep. Ron Reynolds Rep. Toni Rose Rep. Senfronia Thompson Rep. Scott Turner Rep. Sylvester Turner Rep. James White The Texas Legislative Black Caucus members welcome you to the 2015 African American Legislative Summit. Themed The Bridge to Tomorrow, the Summit will examine critical issues that will impact African American Communities in an increasingly more diverse Texas. With new leadership in the State of Texas, this is the perfect time to host pertinent discussions on how to secure a bright future for our communities. As a result of this meeting of the minds, we hope to develop viable recommendations relative to these issues for consideration by the Texas Legislature. We will kick off the Summit by honoring the achievements and contributions of Dr. Kneeland Youngblood, co-founder of venture capital firm, Pharos Capital Group LLC. We will also enjoy a musical selection by award-winning Gospel singer and Houston native Yolanda Adams. Monday night will feature keynote speaker, the Honorable Willie Brown, former Speaker of the California Assembly and Mayor of San Francisco as well as a Texas native. That night we will award $120,000 in scholarships to deserving high school seniors from across the state. Then, on Tuesday morning at the Community Awards Breakfast, we will hear remarks from Emmyaward winning actress Lynn Whitfield and honor 19 Outstanding Texans for their contributions to the State of Texas. Informative panel discussions will address a wide range of critical issues including leadership, education, health care, interactions with the criminal justice system, and business opportunities. Recognizing that we are elected to serve you, we are excited to open the doors of the Capitol to everyone and offer panels and discussions at no cost with the exception of travel and lodging. We are deeply appreciative of our many sponsors of the Golf Tournament whose financial support helped underwrite this Conference. We offer our thanks to Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University, the University of Texas at Austin, the Institute for Urban Policy Research and Analysis at the University of Texas, and the University of Texas Medical Branch for partnering with us in this effort. Again, Welcome! Senator Rodney Ellis Senator Royce West The Honorable Sylvester Turner Chair, Texas Legislative Black Caucus
