1 CLEVE AREA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 4th May, 2016 Term 2, Week 1 Hello Everyone Welcome to term 2. I trust all our students and staff have had a good rest and are ready for the challenges ahead. Congratulations to all our SRC representatives who were presented to the whole school at the SRC Induction assembly held yesterday. I was very impressed with the quality of all the speeches, I congratulate and thank the senior school SRC reps who planned and presented at the assembly. Thanks also to the staff who are supporting the SRC. This was a great team effort from our SRC CREW. I also congratulate all of the students who demonstrated great audience and listening skills during the assembly. This to me is one indicator of a great school. Well done students and staff. A great team effort from the whole Cleve CREW. I want to thank Tahlia Heron, an ex-student who completed all her secondary studies at Cleve and is now a qualified Chef at the Pt. Lincoln Hotel. Tahlia was the guest speaker at our SRC induction assembly and delivered an excellent message to all our students.. I also thank all the parents and community members who were able to attend the assembly. A great community effort. The Canteen is opening again next Monday! Yes, we have had interest expressed by Yvonne Britza and Tia Haines, who will be opening the canteen as of next Monday 9 th May. Yvonne and Tia will continue to offer high quality healthy food at a very reasonable price. There will also be specials advertised weekly. I urge you to support the canteen so we can have a viable service to the school. NAPLAN testing will conducted next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We are expecting all Year 3, 5,7 and 9 students to be involved in these tests unless you, the parent, have formally requested an exemption. Parent Interviews for secondary students have been planned for next week. You should have received the mid semester reports at the end of last term. Please make an appointment to talk to teachers about the results and your child s progress. We want all students to succeed and have a positive attitude to work. Research tells us that student achievement is enhanced when parents and the teachers work in a positive partnership to support students. I ask you to work with us to help improve student outcomes. Strategies for Success At Cleve Area School we aim to provide the best Educational Service to our community. Our goal is to help each student to be successful. 2 term 2! WELCOME This week we welcomed two new students, Magenta Cummings and Jaidyn Burns to our reception class. Both students have settled in well and we were impressed with how welcoming our students were in approaching the new students and inviting them to join their activity. Well done to our caring, thoughtful students. We hope that Magenta and Jaidyn s families enjoy their time within our school community. CULTURAL INFUSION This term we have been fortunate to book a full day workshop with Western Creation Indigenous Culture Infusion. Students will be involved in storytelling, Dance and Art Workshops. The workshops will present an introduction to indigenous history and culture. R-7 students will work within class groups accessing workshops throughout the day on Friday 20 th May. SECONDARY PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Thank you to the parents who have made bookings for parent/teacher interviews through the School Interviews online booking system. We have had a positive response so far but still encourage those parents who have not booked a time to do so this week. If you are having difficulty accessing a particular teacher, please give the ladies at the front office a call and they will assist you with the bookings. Below is some information for parents about how to approach parent/teacher interviews. Parent/Teacher interviews provide opportunities to: Share information about your child s progress, interests and needs. Foster positive and respectful relationships between home and school. Improve communication with your child s teachers. Find out how you can become involved in your child s learning Schedule a follow-up interview if required. What should you expect An inclusive conversation, with both parties talking and listening Emphasis on learning how well the child is doing at school and how they can improve Opportunities and challenges you will hear positive feedback about your child s progress and areas for improvement Before the interview Review your child s Term 1 Interim Report/assignments/homework/tests. Encourage your child to attend the interview. Make a list of any specific questions you may want to ask. Ask your child what he/she would like to ask or tell their teacher. Ask your child what he/she thinks the teacher is going to tell you. During the interview Find out how your child is doing by asking questions like: Is my child performing at the appropriate standard? What are his/her strengths? How could he/she improve? Ask to see examples of your child s work? Ask how the teacher allocates grades? Share your thoughts and feelings about your child. Tell the teacher what you think they are good at and what they need help with. Ask what you can do to support learning at home. Discuss concerns in an honest way without being defensive or angry. After the interview Write down the things that you and the teacher will do to support the child. Make plans to check in with the teacher later in the term and ask the teacher to contact you too! Talk to your child and partner (if they didn t attend the interview) and inform them of the information as soon as possible. Reminder: bookings close Thursday 5/5/2016 MILE END ATHLETICS On Sunday, 10th April a team of 29 athletes travelled to Adelaide to compete in the State Secondary Schools Athletics Competition at Mile End Stadium. The track and field competition is graded from A1/A2 down to F1/F2 which gives schools the opportunity to compete against others of similar standard. Both the boy s and girl s teams competed in D2 grade after last year competing in this grade where the boy s team finished 3rd, the girl s team 5th and 4th in the combined competition. Sunday evening was spent dining out at Jetty Road followed by a game of ten pin bowling and laser skirmish. On the Monday, the day of competition, students were lucky enough to experience ideal weather conditions and enjoyed the opportunity to compete at a first class stadium to produce some terrific performances. Many students achieved a place and some managed personal bests. It was great to see everyone pushing themselves and trying to do their best for the team, which in the end resulted in the girls finishing strongly in 2nd place (only 5 points behind the winning school) whilst after being 2nd or 3rd all day, the boys dropped back during the relays to finish 5th but weren t far off 2nd place in an even competition. As a result of strong performance from both teams we finished 2nd overall and will be promoted to D1 grade in A special mention to Cameron Taheny who is to be congratulated on achieving 3 Standards of Excellence (recognition for achieving a benchmark of the top 5% of results) in his Under 15 Triple Jump, Long Jump and High Jump events. We have had only a few competitors achieve a standard so to get 3 in the one year is an outstanding achievement! I would like to thank all the competitors for the spirit in which they took part in the competition and their excellent behaviour throughout the whole trip. I would also like to thank Trevor McDonough, Andrew Story and Ashleigh Byrnes for their support and help with transport. Final Scores:

It has been a successful fundraiser for our Canberra Trip later in the year and your support is very much appreciated. Canteen News Hello. My name is Yvonne Brtiza, myself and my daughter, Tia Haines have taken on the roles of Canteen Managers. I have experience in both cooking and catering. I have previously worked at the Arno Bay Hotel and the Arno Bay Yacht Club as cook. Tia has been my assistant on several occasions at the Yacht Club. We hope to provide a varied menu offering some specials along the way. Monday 9th May is our grand opening. Please bare with us while we are learning and getting ourselves organised. This is a fantastic adventure of us and we have some great ideas. We are looking forward to our time in the canteen. A menu is attached to this newsletter. Thankyou for your support.
