1 10 Rules for a Fabulous, Functional Wardrobe Congratulations! If you re reading this, you ve taken the first step in turning your closet full of clothes into a Fabulous, Functional wardrobe. The goal of this course is to help you get rid of the phrase I have nothing to wear!. Over the next 10 weeks, you ll learn how to shop and plan to build a wardrobe you love, and one that works for your lifestyle. Here s a little of what you can expect to learn: *How to be smarter with your shopping Time & Money *How to develop a Signature Style (and get out of a Style Rut) *How to let go of the noise keeping you from having the wardrobe you want!

2 Introduction First, let s talk about the phrase I have nothing to wear. There are a few clients I ve worked with who truly had nothing to wear. I remember one such client let s call her Linda. When I got to Linda s house, I told her we always start by going through pants and other bottoms first (you ll learn why in week 3). She pulled out a few pairs of yoga pants, and I was like Ok, now pull out your jeans! Linda: I don t have any Me: Dress pants? Linda: None Me (hopefully): Skirts? Linda (dejectedly): Nope My diagnosis of Linda s wardrobe challenges was done in two minutes; she literally had nothing to wear, except for a few pairs of yoga pants, which meant she couldn t go anywhere where yoga pants weren t appropriate. That s one extreme scenario. However, what most people mean by I have nothing to wear is I have nothing I WANT to wear. Our closets are full of the wrong stuff, like clothes you had for a lifestyle you no longer live. Perhaps your closet is full of clothes you bought without intention, and you have nothing that works together or reflects your style. When we look at a full closet, we assume we MUST have something to wear, and don t give ourselves permission to go out and buy the items that would solve the problem. We limp along, struggling to get dressed every day, never feeling great in what we wear.

3 What is a Wardrobe, Anyway? When I give this course as a presentation, I start by asking How many of you have a wardrobe? A few hands go up. Then I ask, How many of you have a closet full of clothes? Every hand goes up! So what s the difference? Think of a closet full of clothes like people on an airplane. They re all sharing the same space, and a few of the passengers might be connected (we ll call them outfits ), but for the most part, everyone is doing their own thing, heading for the same place, but for different reasons, and not interested in getting to know each other. Now imagine a birthday party that s a wardrobe! Maybe not everyone knows each other, but they re all connected in some way (that s your style), and everyone at the party was invited (shopping with intention more on that in week 1). Which scenario would you rather have for your clothes? A container full of individual pieces, with little cohesion, or a collection of pieces with a common thread that can easily intermingle? But what s a Fabulous, Functional Wardrobe? There are two parts to any great wardrobe--the Fabulous, and the Functional. A Fabulous Wardrobe means your outsides match your insides. Stylist Rachael Zoe said, Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak, and it couldn t be more true. Does your wardrobe reflect the woman you want to project? Or are your clothes merely keeping you from getting a public nudity citation? Do you want to come across as classic and conservative, or do you want people to look at you as individual and artistic? Are your clothes telling

4 the right story? If your insides are saying woman who has it all together and your outfits are saying woman whose pants don t fit, you ve got to get those ladies on the same page! Creating an outer image that reflects who you are on the inside is part of being fabulous, and we ll work on that in week 2. A Fabulous Wardrobe makes you FEEL fabulous, too! My clothes have a job, and that s to make me look and feel great. If they don t do their job, they get fired. Do you find yourself passing over the bright pink sweater you love and instead buying the gray or black one, because it goes with more? We get so caught up in being practical that we forget clothes are supposed to be fun and make us feel good. In the quest for comfort and easy care, have you forgotten you re a woman wants to feel great about herself? A Fabulous Wardrobe gives you that feeling. A Functional Wardrobe is the Fabulous side s more practical sister. Sure, you could buy nothing but party dresses and feather boas, but where would you go in that getup? A Functional Wardrobe means you can get dressed for 90% of your real life without crying or emergency shopping (I know you ve done it!). Ok, yes. If you get a phone call saying a relative you never knew you had has passed away, and you re now the queen of a small European country, you can justify a last-minute I have nothing to wear shopping trip. But let s be honest. There s a decent chance you could go out to dinner on a normal evening, right? Do you have a go-to outfit that makes you feel great? Saturday and Sunday roll around every week do you have a weekend wardrobe you love?

5 If the thought of getting a last-minute invitation makes you cringe, hang on, Weeks 4 & 6 were made for you. I always tell clients it s not your clothes that matter, but the life you live IN the clothes that s important. The problem comes when we don t have the right clothes for the life we want to live. When that happens, we shy away from going places, or we go and don t feel confident about how we look. Either way, we enjoy life a little less. I ve had clients skip friends weddings, avoid date night with their husbands, and even say no to a weekend girls trip simply because they had nothing to wear. There is a better way. Let s work together to identify your actual needs, and then put a plan together to fill those wardrobe holes, so it s easy to get dressed for (almost) everything that comes your way! And if, by some strange twist of fate, you do become the queen of a small European country you ve never heard of, I ll be happy to shop with you for all your royal needs! For the most part, the modules aren t in any particular order. To me, the principles are all so important, I wish I could put them all in Week 1 so why didn t I? For the simple reason that if I sent to you all 10 at once, you d read through it, think Yes, that is exactly what I ll do when I have a few hours free!, and then never touch it again. By sending a little each week, you re more likely to do a little each week and it s by doing a little that you get

By far, the hardest thing you ll be asked to do (and you ll be asked often) is to part with the things that aren t working for you anymore, and are just acting as insurance clothes just in case you might need them someday. Most of them are probably perfectly fine clothes but they don t make you feel great, and you don t actually want to wear them. I get s all the time from clients, thanking me for helping them get the clutter and noise out of their closets so they could really see what they had, and what they wanted to have. I have never gotten an from a client upset because she got rid of 10-year-old, out-of-style pants that didn t fit anymore. 7 Your Tasks For the Week. 1) Go take a picture of your closet. Right now, without cleaning or straightening anything. We re going to call this Before 2) While you re there, get rid of 5-10 things you know you don t like, need, or wear. Don t overthink it, just do it. I don t care if you get rid of 5 pairs of socks that make your toes feel weird. Just start. Put these items in a big bin, or trash bag. During this course, keep filling the bin or bag. 3) Take a few minutes to write down 2 goals you have for this course. Be specific! 1) 2) 4) me your goals you re a whole lot more likely to stick to it if you tell another person. me your before picture too--i can t wait to see your progress!
