1 SERVICEON Data RELEASE 3.2 Total Control of Your Data Network Network operators face major challenges as they strive to deliver improved service while constrained by flat or reduced OpEx budgets. Today s data networks carry more than just best-effort data. They re next-generation networks that transport mission-critical voice, video, and data. To effectively operate today s data networks, a new approach is needed an approach that delivers equipment-, network-, and service-level management across the range of data technologies. ServiceOn Data is the carrier-class network management system for Ericsson multiservice switches. It provides complete control of data networking technologies, integrating fault, configuration, performance, and security management across the network. Building on this platform, ServiceOn Data allows rapid service activation by placing a powerful provisioning tool in the hands of operations staff. It enables network engineers to maintain service performance by continuously monitoring the network for faults and performance bottlenecks, detecting any problems, and reporting the details of impacted services and customers. ServiceOn Data may be used as a standalone network manager, or may be integrated into an overall Operations Support System (OSS) environment using the ServiceOn Fusion northbound interface (NBI). ServiceOn Fusion acts as an integration or middleware layer, dramatically simplifying the integration between network elements and the OSS applications. 2 Intuitive user interface with topology layout Product overview ServiceOn Data is constructed as a base system and a manager for each functional area. There are then security and availability, as well as integration functional elements for the product as a whole. Base system Discovery and monitoring ServiceOn Data automatically discovers all devices in the network. It obtains the network element configuration and builds a list of interfaces, both logical and physical, which can later be used for provisioning and monitoring. As it discovers the network infrastructure, ServiceOn Data deduces the network connectivity, creating intuitive topological views. The topology map may be customized to meet the users needs, including creation of sites, changing device icons, link representations, and fonts. Inventory management ServiceOn Data provides a full inventory report for each network element, including all replaceable parts, and the serial numbers and revisions of each. It allows the user to search the entire network inventory for items which meet specific criteria. Device maintenance Users can perform a variety of maintenance operations using ServiceOn Data. A user can schedule a software upgrade to a range of devices to occur at a time when impact is minimal. At the specified time, ServiceOn Data will instruct each device to download the new software image and execute it. ServiceOn Data will also back up the configuration of each network element at intervals. Fault management ServiceOn Data actively monitors the status of all network resources and gathers event notifications from the network elements. It displays these notifications in a customizable alarm window, which users can sort and filter to display only the items relevant to them. Users can instantly navigate from a fault to the affected network resource, and to any impacted customers or services. ServiceOn Data will sound an audible alarm and send and pager notifications for alarms that meet specified criteria.

3 ATM manager Connection manager ServiceOn Data features an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) connection provisioning and scheduling wizard that greatly simplifies connection build-out and management of network-wide Quality of Service (QoS) settings. The wizard guides the user step-by-step, efficiently gathering the necessary information to quickly and accurately provision end-to-end connectivity in the network. The scheduler feature allows the user to set up connections to be created and deleted at specified times, allowing bandwidth to be pre-configured to support one-off or repeating connectivity needs. Bulk operations Users can clone, move, modify, and delete ATM connections in bulk using ServiceOn Data. This provides substantial effort savings where network maintenance or reconfiguration necessitates wholesale changes to network connectivity. Diagnostic features Using the Connection Trace features, ServiceOn Data allows users to graphically trace the path that an ATM connection is currently taking through the network. ServiceOn Data will also set up and monitor OAM F4/F5 on appropriately enabled systems. Ethernet manager Control of Ethernet, bridging and VLAN entities ServiceOn Data contains an Ethernet manager that discovers, monitors, and configures entities at the physical, bridge, and VLAN level. With the Ethernet manager, users can configure VLAN connectivity across the network, without having to worry about the detailed configuration on each device. Physical layer management The physical view shows the Ethernet portion of the ServiceOn Data physical topology that consists of Ethernet-capable devices in the network. Creating a point-to-point connection Multi-protocol support ServiceOn Data supports configuration of ATM connectivity to carry the following services: Native ATM Frame Relay using FRF.5, FRF.8 and FRF.16 Leased line, using Circuit Emulation Services (CES) Ethernet over ATM for transparent LAN services Distributed Protection Switching ServiceOn Data allows users to readily configure both originating and terminating resiliency for ATM and Frame Relay over ATM connections, without needing to wrestle with the detailed objects that need to be configured on each device. The result is a working, resilient configuration in less time. Bridge management The Bridging View is the extension of the physical Ethernet view that includes all of the bridges, bridge groups, and bridge ports on Ethernetcapable devices; connectivity between them; and connectivity between the bridges and the managed endstations (hosts and routers). Connectivity can be local over Ethernet or remote over a wide area network. Remote bridge connectivity is achieved through remote bridge connections between virtual bridge ports on remote bridges. Network-wide VLAN management With its new VLAN builder, ServiceOn Data allows the user to: Create new network VLANs Modify existing network VLANs Add devices to existing and new network VLANs Add ports to existing and new network VLANs LAN Emulation Users can create and manage emulated LANs (ELANs) based on the MFA Forum LAN Emulation (LANE) standard. ServiceOn Data supports the configuration of LAN Emulation Client (LEC), Server (LES) and Configuration Server (LECS).

4 Real-time performance management ServiceOn Data also includes a real-time performance management tool (PMRT) for diagnostic tasks. Using PMRT, users can select an entity to be examined and with a few clicks, call up a graph of the key performance statistics, allowing instant visibility of the object s performance. A user can set threshold crossing alerts, to be notified if the behavior moves outside the desired operating parameters. Creating a network VLAN with the VLAN Builder Performance management Historical performance management ServiceOn Data s Historical Performance Management feature allows the network operator to capture the performance data of the network over an extended period of time. The performance information is collected at configurable sample rates and, optionally, consolidated to reduce the data volume. Users can run summary or detailed reports on the collected information, which can be displayed graphically in ServiceOn Data, saved to a file, or exported. Using this feature, the network operator can gather long-term statistical data for SLA validation, trend analysis, and capacity planning, ensuring that these activities are performed with accurate, up-to-date data, rather than data based on guesswork. Security and availability High availability (Sun Microsystems Solaris platform only) High Availability provides a second ServiceOn Data system which remains in warm standby, synchronized with the primary server. If the primary server fails, the secondary will take over, ensuring continued availability of the system. Security ServiceOn Data provides comprehensive authentication, authorization, and access control, with the ability to assign different levels of privilege to each user. To ensure the integrity of the managed network, ServiceOn Data can be configured to use secure protocols to communicate between client workstations, the ServiceOn Data server, and the network elements. Integration and extensions OSS integration ServiceOn Fusion is the NBI that allows network operators to readily integrate ServiceOn Data with other OSS applications, both bespoke applications, and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) applications from vendors such as Telcordia, InfoVista, and IBM. HP OpenView integration ServiceOn Data can optionally be integrated with HP OpenView Network Node Manager, allowing the network operator to use OpenView as the umbrella manger, invoking ServiceOn Data to manage the Ericsson multiservice switch router devices. Third-party device support ServiceOn Data supports a range of third-party devices, making it a true multi-vendor management system. Furthermore it can be easily extended to manage additional third-party devices as required. Using Historical Performance Management Customer network management (CNM) ServiceOn Data s CNM server allows end customers to view the status of their services to activate and deactivate those services on demand. The network operator remains in full control of the amount of information that the customer can view, and how much control they have of their services.

The following guidelines are provided for medium networks (up to 1,000 devices). Base ServiceOn data functionality: 2 CPUs ATM management: 2 CPUs Ethernet and VLAN management: 2 CPUs Historical performance management: 2 CPUs Therefore, a system which uses all ServiceOn Data features on a medium network will need to run on an 8-CPU machine. Standard ServiceOn Data functionality includes monitoring the network for faults and status changes, reporting of inventory, and device-level and interface-level management. ServiceOn Data requires a minimum of 8GB free disk space in which to operate, but it is recommended that at least 20GB be available to allow for backups, archives, and other operations.
