1 Arena Sports Hall Use: Festival of local sports Arena Sports Hall and Kasprowicza Park The ARENA Sports & Exhibition hall and surrounding Kasprowicza Park are popular leisure places where various cultural and entertainment events are organized. Location and access Arena and Kasprowicza Park are located relatively close to the city center. Good road infrastructure and extensive city transit network ensure easy access to these areas both for residents of Poznań and visitors from Poland and abroad. History and use The Arena Sports & Exhibition Hall in Jan Kasprowicza Park was designed by Jerzy Turzeniecki and erected according to his design in It resembles an umbrella canopy and has an area of 6200 m2. The unusual shape of the hall was to resemble the Sports Palace built in Rome in Roof of the hall is covered with aluminum sheet. It has 4200 seats. Additionally, around 3000 stands can be placed on the floor. Numerous sports events are staged nowadays in the hall, such as volleyball, basketball, handball, combat sports and others. The Arena is also used for concerts, performances and movie displays. 4 The City Stadium Use: Opening and closing ceremony Location and access The City Stadium is located at Bulgarska St. 5/7. The stadium is located about 4 km from the center of Poznan. There are 900 parking spaces near the stadium (but there will be 4500 parking places in 2010). It currently has 24,166 seats (including 8,124 under the roof), but it will have 50,000 seats by June 2010 (Poznan will be one of the host cities of UEFA EURO 2012). lighting: Lx for a field sized: 105 x 68m. In order to meet the requirements of the UEFA and the needs of the Summer Youth Olympic Games, the stadium will have a biological regeneration center, several VIP rooms, conference rooms, media rooms, anti-doping checks room and VIP parking by 2010, so it could become a 5-star stadium according to the UEFA standards. 13 Sheraton Hotel Use: conferences (Conference: Say no to doping in sport) Sheraton Hotel, located near the Poznań International Fair, is considered to be one of the most exclusive places in Poznań. Location and access The 5-star Sheraton Hotel is located in the city center near the Poznań International Fair and the main railway and coach stations. It offers very convenient logistics thanks to such a location, a dense public transit network and an underground parking lot. History and use Sheraton Poznań Hotel was commissioned in It offers 181 luxury rooms, including 13 apartments, and a restaurant, a bar and a pub, as well as 350 m2 of conference and banquet rooms. 15 The Arsenal Gallery Use: exhibitions, Olympic club The Arsenal City Gallery in the Market Square is one of the popular exhibition sites in Poznań. Location and access The Arsenal City Gallery is located at the Market Square. It is easily accessible thanks to nearby bus and tram stops and numerous parking lots. History and use The Gallery was opened in 1962 in place of the old arsenal. The pavilion has three broad exhibition halls with a total area of 660 m2. Beside art events, the important aspect of the Arsenal s program include individual exhibitions of Polish and Poznan artists. Approximately 1,000 exhibitions have been staged in Arsenal till now. The Arsenal City Gallery also hosts auctions of works of arts. Its offer consists primarily of paintings, graphics and fine art from the Gallery s collection and from collectors and artists. 17 The Citadel Park Use: The Olympic Platform of Culture and Arts, Art of Support, workshops Citadel Park (Park Cytadela) Citadel Park is one of the leisure areas in the center of Poznań. Location and access The park is located in close proximity to the city center and other leisure areas of Poznań. It can be accessed either by the city transit system or by one s own means of transport. There are parking lots around the Citadel where visitors can leave their cars. A network of bicycle paths crosses and surrounds the park. History and use The Citadel, together with many other forts around the city, constituted a network of city fortifications erected at the turn of 18th and 19th century. Initially it served as a base to the Prussian Army but after Poland had regained freedom in 1918, the fortification was taken over by the Polish Army. Currently it is known as Citadel Park and is the largest park in Poznań. There are two museums in the remnants of the old citadel buildings: Armament Museum and Museum of the Poznań Army. Other points of interest within the old fort include: an amphitheater, a rosary, a Bell of Freedom and the Youth Community Center. Nowadays, numerous happenings and artistic events for kids and teenagers are organized in Citadel Park, including the Theater Biennale of Arts for Children that has been hosted here for many years. 20 The Wolności Square Use: open-air cinema, performances, happenings The Wolnosci Square (Square of Freedom) is one of the most important public spaces in Poznan. Location and access Square of Freedom is located in a central point of the city, 500 m away from the Old Town Market Square. Due to its location, the Square is easily accessible both to pedestrians and to people using public transit system. There is also an underground parking lot for 500 cars under the square. It is a perfect place to organize mass open-air events for ten thousand-odd people. History and use The Square was established at the turn of 18th and 19th centuries. Another reconstruction was started in 2005 in order to build the underground parking lot under the square. Works were completed in Freedom Square is a rectangular area sized 85m x 205 and it is surrounded with streets from the north, east and south. There is also a single tram track in the southern street. Together with the neighboring streets and arteries, the total area is 17,425 m2. Surface of the Square is stone-paved. Freedom Square is used to organize concerts and mass events for residents of Poznań. According to the EURO 2012 Organizing Committee, Freedom Square will serve as a fan zone during Finals of the European Football Championship in 2012.

23 The Zamek Culture Centre Use: Virtual Youth Olympic Platform (VYOP), workshops, cinema Zamek Culture Center (CK Zamek) Zamek ( Castle ) Culture Center in Poznań is one of the largest institutions of its kind in the country. It hosts about 700 events each year: exhibitions, concerts, movie displays, theater performances, meetings, educational workshops. Location and access CK Zamek is located in the last emperor s residence in Europe erected for a ruling emperor. The castle is located in the city center. There are several bus and tram stops in the nearby. One of the baileys and some areas near the castle are turned into parking lots for cars. The Castle is also located close to the railway and coach stations. History and use The castle was built in 1910 as a residence of the emperor Friedrich II. The building is currently managed and administered by the Zamek Culture Center. Areas of the castle its rooms, halls and baileys can be adapted to many different projects and serve as a base for artistic activities of various kinds. The Castle serves as a gallery, a cinema, a concert hall and a theater, all at the same time. There are also over 20 educational workshops. The Center is involved in important undertakings going on in Poznan. It is open to initiatives of various communities and cooperates with many institutions and cultural centers from the city, the country and from abroad.
