1 Hawk Mountain Treks: Skyline Trail Blazes: Blue (Blue and Yellow between Posts #1 and #2) Start: Post # 2 End: North Lookout Distance: approx. 1 mile, 1.6 km Time: 1 ½ to 2 hours Difficulty: Moderate to hard, the most challenging trail at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Character: Climbing over a series of very large jagged rock formations, separated by easier sections along the ridgeline. Very steep ascent onto north Lookout. Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Both hands must be free at all times. Stay with blazes for safety. Use the paper Trail Guide for reference
2 Skyline - Golden Eagle Junction Post # N, W ( N, W) This Trek begins at Post #2, accessed from Golden Eagle via River of Rocks. This Trek takes you on an in depth view of Skyline Trail only. Are you a skilled hiker looking for a demanding hike? Have you hiked the other trails at Hawk Mountain and want a new challenge? Yes? Then, this Trek is for you. This Trek turns left at Post #2 toward North Lookout. Turning right will take you toward the Appalachian Trail and off Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, blazed in blue only. 3 Raptors View of the Ridge. The large rock formations leading to East Rocks and North Lookout are easy to see. Many other rock groups are hidden by foliage. Shadows help define the ridge line. Image from Google earth
4 Skyline and Golden Eagle Trails overlap between Post #2 and Post #1. This section of the trail is blazed in both blue and yellow. The beginning of this section is fairly easy, and you may wonder why we say it s so hard. Enjoy this part as all those rock formations are not far. Stay on trail.
5 As you approach the first rock formation you may start to think, oh, THAT S what they re talking about. This is a good time to put binoculars or cameras in a back pack.
6 The visible line of rock formations on the ridge extend 250 yds., 229 m. Other large rock areas on the ridge are covered by foliage, and extend to the upper right of this image. The Trek now goes into this challenging area. Image and data from Google earth, shadows used to define the ridge
7 Here, along the ridge top, the trail traverses large jagged rock formations. Stay with blazes for safety. They provide the path of easiest travel. Winter snow and ice create hazardous conditions. Be careful. Falling may result in serious injury.
8 Trees along the ridgeline provide habitat for wildlife and shade for hikers. Ridgelines are also windy, exposed locations, especially in winter. Wear clothing appropriate for the season.
9 Stay with blazes for safety while going over these large rock areas. Take your time going through the formations. Be careful. When snow and dangerous icy conditions exist, hiking on Skyline may be discouraged. Heed any advise given by Hawk Mountain Staff at any time of the year regarding trail conditions.
10 There are many scenic views along Skyline Trail. Raptor viewing can be very good up here. Beauty is all around in many forms, from lichens to dramatic clouds. Remember, Hawk Mountain is a Sanctuary to all plants and animals. Only take photos and memories home.
11 Up, across, and back down the formations is a recurring theme on Skyline Trail. Some areas are easier and you can get a little break before the next challenge. Snakes frequently lay on rocks in warm weather. Leave them alone.
12 The approach to East Rocks is not completely visible from the opposing ridge. This is a large area. You re almost there.
13 East Rocks GPS N, W Choose a rock and rest. This is the large exposed rock field visible from South Lookout. A good raptor viewing location. This location is on the Trail Guide, but it is not marked by signs or posts. GPS data corresponds to pin location on Google earth image, slide 6 Use the paper Trail Guide for reference
14 Enjoy the view as Skyline goes over the last large ridgeline formations. The view north is pleasant. At any time a hawk, eagle, or vulture may fly by.
15 Easier hiking is ahead as you go from one section of the ridge to another. The large rock formations of the ridge spine are left behind and the trail changes in character. In this area woodlands cover the ridge. Take time to look at forest plants or watch birds living in this area.
16 Skyline - Golden Eagle Junction Post # 1 GPS N, W ( N, W) Skyline Trail intersects with the short Golden Eagle Trail connector. This Trek continues on Skyline Trail. Blazes are blue between Post #1 and North Lookout. Golden Eagle Trail will take you to River of Rocks Trail. It is blazed in yellow. 17 There is some easy walking for awhile, but climbing on large rock formations is not over. Stay with blue blazes as they are the best way over these difficult areas.
18 The last section of this Trek is the approach to North Lookout. It is steep, rugged, and straight up at the end. This Google earth image gives a good view of the area.
19 Up close, this ascent to North Lookout goes up steep rocky terrain. Rocks may be loose. Keep hands free at all times. Stay with blazes.
20 The final climb up onto North Lookout is about 30 ft (10m) straight up. Use extreme caution here and stay with blazes. Climbing down off North Lookout is difficult because of this steep area.
21 North Lookout Climb up on the end of the lookout and see the sign for Skyline Trail. From here it s an easy walk down Lookout Trail and back to the Visitors Center.
