10 Changes to SMC announced yesterday Lower numbers for SMC for the rest of 2016/17 Necessary to manage the demand under the New Zealand Residence Programme and stay within the annual planning range of 45,000 to 50,000 this year Raising the automatic selection threshold from 140 to 160 points, and no selections for job offers below that threshold. A lower planning range for the period 2017/18 range of 40,000 to 45,000 people, meaning lower numbers of SMC visas in the longer term Changes to English language testing for SMC applicants.
11 How will SMC change affect migrants already in the process of applying? EOI ITA APP If selected before 12 October, then 140 point threshold will apply If selected on or after 12 October, then 160 point threshold will apply If already invited to apply for SMC visa before 12 October, 140 point threshold still applies If SMC application accepted before 12 October, 140 point threshold still applies
12 How will SMC changes affect people working in my business? Qualified, experienced Chefs currently working in NZ are still likely to meet the new SMC points threshold, if they: Meet the Long Term Skills Shortage List criteria, Have an offer of employment outside Auckland, Are eligible for points for their partner s employment/qualifications, and/or Are eligible to claim points for relevant NZ work experience. Qualified, experienced people in other roles (including Café and Restaurant Managers) currently working in NZ are likely to meet the new SMC points threshold, if they: have an offer of employment outside Auckland, Are eligible for points for their partner s employment/qualifications, and/or Are eligible to claim points for relevant NZ work experience. Those of your chefs or café/restaurant managers who do not meet the new points threshold are still eligible to apply for a work visa based on their job or job offer.
13 Where to from here? The SMC is under broader review. Detailed decisions are expected to be made by the end of 2016 so that changes can be implemented in The Hospitality Association will be consulted as part of this process.
