6 Consumption and international trade The Windows and Doors sector ia a mature industry. As shown in Figure 1.1, consumption in 2012 in the 30 major markets covered in this report was US$ 156 billion in Figure 1.1 Windows and Doors consumption in 30 major markets, US$ billion Source: CSIL Note: Consumption means apparent consumption at production prices, excluding retail mark up (apparent consumption = production exports + imports) The largest market is China, with consumption of Windows and Doors (estimated at production value, excluding retail mark up) amounting to about US$ 39 billion in 2012 (up from about US$ 9 billion in 2003). The other major markets are the US, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Australia, Canada and Brazil. The main importing countries are the US, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and Switzerland. The countries with the largest Windows and Doors manufacturing industry are China and the US. Production of Windows and Doors in China increased from US$ 10 billion in 2003 to US$ 42 billion in The value of US Windows and Doors shipments in 2012 (including exports) was about US$ 24 billion, with an increase of 5% in current dollars over Other major manufacturing countries are Germany, Japan, Italy, France, the UK, Australia, Canada and Brazil. The breakdown of production by material, in value, is available for 18 countries which in aggregate produce about US$ 82 billion of Windows and Doors (at production value, excluding retail mark up). The breakdown by material in value is 41% metal, 31% wood and 28% plastics. The breakdown by material for other countries is not available at present. CSIL plans to collect and analyze data for several additional countries, to be included in future editions of this report. 2
7 The main exporting countries are China and Germany and Poland. Other major exporters are the US, Italy and Canada. Figure 1.7 Windows and Doors exports, 6 major exporting countries, US$ Million China Germany Poland United States Italy Canada 2012 Source: CSIL processing of official data Among these major exporters, the two countries with the highest propensity to exports are Poland and Germany, with exports/production ratios of 36% and 16% respectively. An overview of international trade of Windows and Doors is included in the report. In substance, international trade of Windows and Doors originates mainly in China, Germany, Poland, the US, Italy and Canada and flows mostly to the US, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and Switzerland. Iinternational trade of Windows and Doors (defined as the average between the total of Windows and Doors exports from the 70 major countries and the total of Windows and Doors imports into the 70 major countries) grew from about US$ 7.1 billion in 2003 to about US$ 12.7 billion in Slow growth is expected in 2013 and Total international trade in 2014 is forecasted to reach US$ 13 billion. The report also includes forecasts of growth of consumption of Windows and doors for 30 countries. 3
8 Appendix: Notes, presentation conventions, classification of countries 1. Billion means 1000 million. 2. All dollar figures are in current US$ unless otherwise indicated. They are affected by exchange rate variations, in particular by the strengthening of the major currencies against the US$. 3. Growth rates in consumption forecasts are in real terms means zero or less then half the unit shown. 5. Population and GNP data for all countries are either from the World Development Indicators, World Bank, or from the World Economic Outlook Database, IMF. 6. Windows and Doors trade data were processed by CSIL mainly on the basis of UN and Eurostat data. Other sources include: US International Trade Commission, Industry Canada, Ministry of Finance (Japan), Board of Foreign Trade (Taiwan). 7. Windows and Doors include: doors, windows and their frames and thresholds for doors of plastics; windows, French windows and their frames, of wood; doors and their frames and thresholds of wood; doors, windows and their frames and thresholds for doors of iron or steel; doors, windows and their frames and thresholds for doors of aluminium. 8. Classification of windows and doors by material as follows: - Plastics: doors, windows and their frames and thresholds for doors of plastics; - Wood: windows, French windows and their frames, of wood; doors and their frames and thresholds of wood; - Metal: doors, windows and their frames and thresholds for doors of iron or steel; doors, windows and their frames and thresholds for doors of aluminium. 9. Building construction Investments include investments for residential and non residential buildings (excluding investments for civil engineering). Data are from CRESME Ricerche, a supplier of statistical data managing a database (SIMCO) covering construction sector data for over 150 countries in order to analyze dynamics and perspectives of the building activity sector. 10. Data for China do not include data for Hong Kong (listed separately). Trade data for China should be used with caution because of discrepancies between Chinese statistics on exports to the US and US statistics on imports from China. Much of the discrepancy stems from transshipments through Hong Kong which are classified differently by different countries. The US attributes to China all imports which are shipped through Hong Kong while China treats this trade as exports to Hong Kong (the last known destination). Markups in price during transshipment result in additional differences. Discrepancies also exist in treatment of insurance and freight. Finally there are differences due to unrecorded shipments, under-invoicing and misdeclaration of products. 11. The total amount of exports and the total amount of imports for the 70 countries considered by CSIL do not coincide because of trade with countries not included in the sample, value of insurance and freight, technical differences in the collection of data regarding imports and exports, consequences of transshipments, over and under invoicing and customs misdeclarations. 12. Eurostat data were converted to US$ using exchange rates from the US Federal Reserve. 4
