1 2015 Indiana Tax Institute Speaker Bios J. Paul Ashley Advisor FirstPerson Ashley is an advisor for FirstPerson, serving mid-market clients and leading new business development efforts. He looks for ways to grow business and enhance involvement in the community by developing quality relationships with strategic partners and clients. Prior, he ran a benefits consulting practice, working with 70 employers with five to 2,000 full-time employees. Jeffrey Bennett, JD Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP Bennett practices in property tax, real estate development and construction, environmental law, manufacturing and state and local tax He is a graduate of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, J.D. and earned his undergraduate degree from DePauw University. Bennett received admission to the Indiana Bar in 1989 and the U.S. District Court, Southern and Northern Districts of Indiana in Charo Boyd Public Affairs Specialist Social Security Administration Boyd is the Social Security Administration s public affairs specialist for the Indianapolis metropolitan area. She is responsible for informing the public about SSA programs and benefits. She is often the guest speaker for retirement and disability seminars. She also has trained human resources managers, financial planners, tax preparers, social workers, case managers, disability advocates and attorneys on various SSA topics. Francina Dlouhy, JD Faegre Baker Daniels LLP Dlouhy is a partner with Faegre Baker Daniels LLP and is the leader of the firm's state and local tax practice group. She practices in all areas of state and local taxation, representing business taxpayers in administrative proceedings and litigation involving state income taxes, sales and use tax, financial institutions taxes, and real and personal property taxes. She also represents clients on tax planning and obtaining incentives for investment and expansion. Dlouhy has extensive experience with tax abatement, enterprise zones, EDGE credits, and research and development incentives.

2 Ellen Deeter, JD, CFP, CTFA Attorney & Registered Civil Mediator Deeter Law Deeter is an attorney and registered civil mediator in Indianapolis, after having spent most of the past 35 years working in bank trust departments. She retired from The National Bank of Indianapolis at the end of 2013, where she worked in various roles over 18 years, including serving as the Manager of the Personal Trusts and Estates Group and as Senior Trust Counsel. During her tenure at The National Bank of Indianapolis, it grew from $35 million in assets under administration to $1.6 billion in assets. She is a frequent lecturer on estate planning, trust administration and taxation topics. She has been an instructor for the American Bankers Association National Graduate Trust School, the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum, the American Institute of Banking, National Business Institute and the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis, among others. Abigail Grenfell, MBA, CFE, CIA, CPA President Internal Control and Anti-Fraud Experts, LLC Grenfell is president of Internal Control and Anti-Fraud Experts, LLC, a company focused on developing and implementing strong internal controls and business practices for small- and medium-sized companies. With an emphasis on fraud prevention, Grenfell has focused her efforts on assisting U.S. companies comply with financial reporting compliance requirements since She has more than 20 years of senior-level finance and accounting experience and 15 years of fraud investigation and forensic accounting experience. She concluded and testified as an expert witness in her first forensic investigation in 1999 and has discovered, reported and investigated numerous incidents since that time for both publicly traded and privately held companies. Brad Hasler, JD Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP Hasler represents individuals, businesses and utility companies statewide in matters related to real and personal property taxation, including assessment appeals and requests for tax exemption. He has helped clients pursue strategies for reducing tax liability across their operations both statewide and on a national level. He also represents clients across a broad range of industries in litigation in state and federal court. He has litigated business and contract disputes, disputes involving real estate transactions, zoning and the use of lakefront property, as well as defamation cases.

3 Richard Kaplan, CPA, JD Peer and Sarah Pedersen Professor of Law University of Illinois Kaplan is the peer and Sarah Pedersen professor of law at the University of Illinois, specializing in the areas of federal income taxation and federal tax policy. He also is a CPA and practiced in Atlanta before going to Yale Law School. After graduating from Yale, he practiced law for three years in Houston before going to the University in He is the author of Federal Taxation of International Transactions and a co-author of two volumes in the West s Federal Taxation textbook series. In addition, he has testified before the House Committee on Ways and Means and the Senate Committee on Finance at the Committees' request. Senator David Long President Pro Tempore Indiana State Senate David Long is a Republican member of the Indiana State Senate, representing District 16. He was first elected to the chamber in He currently serves as State Senate President Pro Tempore and in the 2015 legislative session will be serving on the Joint Rules Committee and is Chair of the Rules and Legislative Procedure Committee. Prior to being elected to the Senate, Long served as a Fort Wayne City Councilman from 1988 to 1995 and as a member of the Urban Enterprise Zone Board of Fort Wayne from 1991 to His professional experience includes working as an attorney/partner for Moss, Crowell, Harris and as general counsel for Pizza Hut of Fort Wayne, Incorporated.

4 William Murphy, CPA/PFS, ABV, CFF, CVA Owner Murphy Financial Group, P.C. Murphy is the owner of Murphy Financial Group, P.C. located in Indianapolis and previously worked at its predecessor Murphy & Company, P.C. for over 25 years, where he was director of Entrepreneurial and Tax Services and was the firm's majority shareholder. He currently is associated with the law firm of Mallor Grodner LLP and assists in providing tax, valuation, and financial analysis services focusing in the areas of family law and business transactions. He also provides consultation services on tax and financial planning issues to various publishing and news organizations on current tax law changes occurring within federal and state government. Murphy is a member and former chairman of the Ethics Committee for the Indiana CPA Society. He was a former director with the Indiana Attorney General's Office while attending Indiana University law school. He has appeared as an expert witness in numerous cases involving marital and business disputes and has lectured extensively on valuation and tax issues. Laura Rakaska, CPA Deputy Director, Enforcement Division Indiana Department of Revenue Rakaska is a deputy director in the Enforcement Division at the Indiana Department of Revenue. She has been with the department for eight years and oversees the division s desk audit, compliance, and audit support operations. Prior, she worked in public accounting for 10 years, primarily in the area of audit and advisory services. She holds a bachelor s degree in accounting from Franklin College and is an active CPA. Mark Sellner, CPA, JD, LLM Owner Mark A. Sellner, CPA Sellner consults on virtually all areas of business and executive taxation and mergers and acquisitions, including advising large corporate buyers, entrepreneurial and family business sellers, corporate executives and high net worth individuals. He has both Fortune 500 and Big Four corporate tax and mergers and acquisitions experience. Sellner was tax counsel and director of U.S. Taxes at Ecolab Inc., in St. Paul, Minnesota, and completed a three-year Ernst & Young National Tax Department corporate tax and consolidated returns assignment in Washington, D.C.

5 Peter Ten Eyck, JD Hackman Hulett LLP Ten Eyck assists clients primarily with estate and retirement planning; wills and trusts; powers of attorney; living wills; guardianships; estate and trust administration; inheritance disputes; and estate and trust litigation. His practice also encompasses business formation and succession planning; real estate and personal property matters; and general civil litigation. He has provided pro bono legal services to the Indianapolis Bar Association s Low Asset Will Program and Ask a Lawyer Program, the Protective Order Pro Bono Project, the Community Development Law Center, and the Heartland Pro Bono Council. He also has represented the Indianapolis and Indiana State Bar Associations at naturalization ceremonies for new U.S. Citizens. Before joining the firm, Ten Eyck was a deputy prosecuting attorney for the Marion County Prosecutor s Office and represented the State of Indiana in major felony criminal cases such as robberies and homicides. Emily Steeb Associate Faegre Baker Daniels Steeb practices with the firm s tax advocacy group that offers comprehensive service and extensive industry knowledge to provide counsel to multistate and multinational taxpayers in all aspects of local, state, federal and international taxation. Before graduating cum laude from law school, Steeb was a tax advocacy law clerk at Faegre Baker Daniels. She researched state and local income, property, and sales and use tax laws as well as emerging trends from various states throughout the country to draft settlement agreements, briefs and memoranda. She also served as a research assistant at Indiana University, collaborating with Dr. Tracy Gunter on a paper to be published in the Indiana Health Law Review on the regulation of neuroscience in the law.
