We have completed first week of school. I am very excited for all the learning adventures our class will have together during the year ahead! Please read the overview of what to expect in Grade 1. 2 1 1 MICHTICH SEPTEMBER 015 Curriculum This Month French We will be reviewing letters and letter sounds, introducing the daily 5 (reading and writing activities), journal writing and completing thematic units on back to school, colours, parts of the body and apples. assessing Social Studies during the first term. We are choosing instead to focus our instruction on the acquisition of French Language skills so that when Social Studies is formally introduced students are better able to understand and apply the concepts presented. Math We will begin with number sense looking at numbers from 0-0. We will be counting to 0 and backwards from 10. We will also be looking at doubles (e.g. +), patterns and subitizing (recognition of dot patterns). Health We will study the 8 Habits and making responsible choices. Physical Education We will explore movement in various environments (inside and outside). Science We will begin a unit on colour and look at seasonal changes. Art We will explore colour in various mediums (paint, pastel, crayons) and the use of warm and cool colours. Social Studies We will not be formally Volunteering Parent volunteers are a valued and important part of our school community. As per Policy GBCD, all volunteers in Rocky View Schools as part of a classroom, school or system-wide program are required to submit a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks prior to the start of the volunteer activities. A letter to take to the RCMP is available at the school office.

3 1 MICHTICH SEPTEMBER 015 We are Nut Aware! École Edwards is a nut and seed aware school. That means we ask that no tree nuts or peanuts be brought to the school. Let me know about nut or other allergies so necessary precautions can be made. Please refer to our school Allergy Policy at: ations/allergy-policy 1st Century Competencies At the heart of Rocky View Schools, learner competencies is the principle that education must prepare students fully for their lives as individuals and as members of society - with the capacity to achieve their goals, contribute to their communities, and continue learning throughout their lives. RVS' learner competencies are a set of intellectual, personal, and social skills that all students need to develop in order to engage in deeper learning learning that encourages students to look at things from different perspectives, to see the relationships between their learning in different subjects, and to make connections to their previous learning and to their own experiences. Each month, our classroom newsletter will highlight one or two of the 1st Century Competencies and how they influence your child s learning and leadership at École Edwards. 3

4 1 MICHTICH SEPTEMBER 015 Literacy and Numeracy Corner Literacy and Numeracy are foundational to successful learning and living. They are lifelong and active processes that begin at birth and develop throughout one's lifetime. Literacy and numeracy enable individuals to reach their full potential, achieve a better quality of life, and contribute to their communities. To discover and make meaning of an increasingly complex and evolving world, students need the confidence and habits of mind to acquire, create, connect and communicate information in a variety of contexts, going beyond the basic skills of reading, writing and solving simple arithmetic problems. Literacy and numeracy are a shared responsibility." ~ Alberta Education In support of Rocky View Schools vision to ensure students are literate and numerate and are building 1st Century Competencies, this year our school will continue our purposeful focus on both literacy and numeracy instruction. Beginning with the End in Mind, we know that we want Edwards students to leave our school with the tools to be successful leaders for life. Strong literacy and numeracy skills are foundational to this success. Each month our Newsletter will provide helpful hints about how our students are learning literacy and numeracy concepts and how you can support their learning at home. Lunch and Recess in class Grade 1 is very exciting year as the class now has the opportunity to enjoy recess outside twice daily (after lunch and in the afternoon)! Students are expected to go outside in most weather conditions (down to -19 degrees in the winter). Please ensure your child has clothing that is appropriate for our frequently changing weather conditions. Students are also now eating two snacks and a lunch at school. We expend a lot of energy in Grade 1, our minds and bodies are rapidly growing! As we have the first week under out belt, please check with your child to see if they feel they need an additional item or two in their lunch/snack throughout the day. A very important reminder that we are a Nut Aware School, please do not send and food items containing peanuts or tree nuts. We do have allergies in our classroom. If you are choosing to send nut alternatives such as WOW butter please place a note or sticker in the lunch box as it can be difficult to tell the difference between peanut butter and safe alternatives. 4
