2 Washburn University Faculty Salary Analysis This report provides an overview of Washburn University s average faculty salaries. Washburn salaries are compared with faculty salaries nationally, regionally, and with the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) institutions. Washburn Law School faculty are excluded from the analysis, unless it explicitly states they are included. Selected Key Findings For the third consecutive year, the Washburn Board of Regents was not able to allocate funds for merit salary increases in , resulting in average faculty salaries below salaries for all ranks except instructors and lecturers. Washburn University s overall average faculty salary was $66,053 (including law school faculty), declining by 1.2% from When law school faculty are excluded, the average salary is $59,293, also representing a 1.2% decline. Overall salaries for continuing faculty (including law school faculty) increased by 0.7%; when law school faculty are excluded, salaries for continuing faculty increased by 0.6%. Excluding the law school, salaries for continuing professors increased by 0.2%, for associate professors by 0.5%, and for assistant professors by 1.1%. A comparison of Washburn s average salaries with the six Kansas Board of Regents institutions shows Washburn s average salaries at the top three ranked levels (professor, associate professor, assistant professor) are lower than the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, and Wichita State University and higher than Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, and Pittsburg State University. Washburn s average salaries are lower than the average salaries of public and private master s level institutions in the region 1 for the top three ranks. Washburn s average salaries remain lower than the national average for public master s level institutions, and for the fifth year in a row, Washburn lost ground in achieving average salary parity with this group of institutions. For Washburn s top three faculty ranks, Washburn is now 10.2% below the national average for public master s institutions; this is the largest percentage difference since AAUP reports Kansas institutions in the West North Central region. Other states in this region are Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. 3 The National Picture Nationally, according to the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), average salaries of full-time faculty rose by 1.8% from to , which was slightly higher than the prior year s 1.4% increase. With inflation at 3%, this is the third consecutive year in which the change in average faculty salaries was below the change in the cost of living. Continuing faculty fared slightly better with average salaries increasing by 2.9%. AAUP states although the recession is over, faculty salary levels are marginally better than they have been the last two years but are still historically low. The recovery is slow in coming. 2 For public master s level institutions, average faculty salary increases of 0.7% were lower than the national average, increasing by 0.8% for professors and associate professors and 1.2% for assistant professors. Salaries increased by 2.0% for instructors. 3 AAUP reports higher salary increases for continuing faculty at public master s institutions with overall increases of 2.4%. The increases by rank are 2.0% for professors, 2.6% for associate and assistant professors, and 3.2% for instructors. Washburn University (Table 1; Chart 1) For the third consecutive year, like many postsecondary institutions across the nation, the Washburn Board of Regents was not able to allocate funds in for merit salary increases; for most Washburn faculty this means salaries have not changed since July 1, Table 1 shows Washburn s average salaries from to by rank for full-time faculty including and excluding law school faculty. The table also shows annual percent changes in salaries by rank for all faculty and for continuing faculty as well as the change in salaries over five years. Chart 1 illustrates how Washburn salaries have changed over the five years. In , 75.8% of the 265 full-time Washburn faculty were in tenure-track positions, distributed fairly evenly across the top three ranks (professor, associate professor, assistant professor). Washburn s average faculty salary was $66,053 (including law school faculty); when law school faculty are excluded, the average salary is $59,293. The average salary for tenure-track positions (excluding lecturers and law school faculty) is substantially higher at $64, A Very Slow Recovery: The Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession, , Academe, American Association for University Professors (AAUP), March-April Although institutions report data for lecturers, AAUP does not specifically report data for this category; salary data for lecturers are included in the calculations for all ranks. 4 The overall average faculty salary for all ranks (professor, associate professor, assistant professor, instructor, and lecturer) excluding law declined by 1.2% from Salaries decreased for professors by 0.7%, for associate professors by 2.4%, and for assistant professors by 0.9%; salaries increased for instructors by 4.1%. There was no change in salaries for lecturers. When considering only continuing faculty, the overall picture is slightly better, primarily because funds were allocated for faculty promotions (e.g., tenure awards, change in rank). Salaries for continuing faculty increased by 0.6%. Continuing faculty salaries increased for professors by 0.2%, for associate professors by 0.5%, and for assistant professors by 1.1%. There was no change in salaries for continuing faculty at the ranks of instructors and lecturers. For the five-year period, through , salaries for all faculty including law increased by 1.0%. When law school faculty are excluded, salaries declined by 0.5% although there are differences by rank. Salaries decreased for professors by 2.2% and for associate professors by 2.8%. Salaries increased by 2.7% for assistant professors, by 3.1% for instructors, and by 6.4% for lecturers. For professors and associate professors, salaries are lower than salaries by $1,809 and $1,796, respectively. Comparison of Washburn with KBOR Institutions (Tables 2, 3; Chart 2, Graphs A-C) Table 2 compares Washburn s faculty salaries to salaries at the six Kansas public fouryear institutions: University of Kansas (KU), Kansas State University (KSU), Wichita State University (WSU), Emporia State University (ESU), Pittsburg State University (PSU), and Fort Hays State University (FHSU). 4 The average salaries for all ranks are weighted. Salaries for two earlier years ( and ) are provided in Table 3 to show how salaries have changed over five years. Graphs A-C in Chart 2 illustrate the salary trends over five years, through Washburn salaries for instructor and lecturer ranks are combined in this section to make Washburn data comparable to the ranks used at the KBOR institutions. For , Washburn s weighted average faculty salary for all ranks was $59,293. The comparable average salary for the entire Regents system was $75,452, making Washburn s average salary 21.4% lower. Excluding KU and KSU, Washburn s average salary is 7.0% below the average of the four KBOR institutions. Washburn s average salaries were below the KBOR salaries at every rank except instructor/lecturer. The average salary of the top three ranks (professor, associate professor, assistant professor) is also provided in Table 2. When compared with the six KBOR institutions, 4 Most of the KBOR institutions provided faculty with mid-year salary increases effective January 1, It is not clear if/how the salaries reported to AAUP by the six institutions reflect these increases. 5 Washburn s average salary of $64,723 is 18.8% below the KBOR average of $79,726. When salaries for KU and KSU are excluded, the Washburn average salary is 4.5% lower. The table below displays one-year changes in salaries from to by rank for Washburn and the six KBOR institutions. 6 Average salaries for professors increased by 5.8% at the six KBOR institutions. When KU and KSU are excluded, average salaries increased by 3.5%. Average salaries for Washburn professors declined by 2.2% over the five years. At the associate professor rank, the five-year salary increase for all six KBOR institutions was 3.1%. When KU and KSU are excluded, the average salary declined by 0.7% due to a decrease in salaries at ESU. Average salaries for Washburn s associate professors declined over the five years by 2.8%. At the assistant professor rank, the five-year salary increase was 6.1% for the six KBOR institutions and 7.2% when KU and KSU are excluded. Average salaries for Washburn assistant professors increased by 2.7%; this increase was substantially lower than the increases at the KBOR institutions. Comparison of Washburn with Master s Level Institutions (Tables 4, 5; Chart 2, Graphs D-F) This section of the report compares Washburn s faculty salaries with other master s level institutions. Average salaries in this section are from AAUP, which has been collecting salary data annually from colleges and universities since the late 1970s and publishing it in the magazine, Academe. In this year s AAUP report, 1,250 institutions are represented including 395 classified as IIA master s level, the category in which Washburn is included. Note AAUP reports average salaries for the ranked positions of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, and instructor; the overall average salary also includes other ranks such as lecturer. Table 4 shows average faculty salaries by rank in , , and for Washburn and: (1) all public and private master s level institutions; (2) public only master s institutions; and (3) public and private master s institutions by region of the country. Kansas institutions are reported in the West North Central region. Washburn s average salaries are below the average of all master s and all public master s institutions at all three faculty ranks. Five years ago, Washburn average salaries were higher than the average salaries in the West North Central region for all three faculty ranks. Washburn s average salaries are now lower than the average salaries in that region for all ranks. The following table shows the salary changes by rank for the five-year period from through for Washburn and master s level institutions. Washburn s average salary for professors was 2.9% lower than salaries at public master s institutions; by , the difference had increased to 8.4%. In the late 1990s, the Washburn Board of Regents committed to making faculty salaries competitive with other public master s level institutions and over the next decade, average salaries increased so Washburn was making progress toward achieving salary parity with the public master s level institutions. Beginning in , with the downturn in the economy, Washburn lost ground in reaching its goal. The Washburn Board of Regents remains committed to making salaries competitive. Theme I of the Strategic Plan 5 approved in April 2010 calls for superior and rigorous liberal arts and professional academic programs offered by distinguished teaching faculty to be achieved by recruit[ing] and retain[ing] superior faculty by emphasizing compensation, support and professional development strategies. This goal is to be met, in part, by continuing efforts to make salaries competitive with a goal of achieving parity with other public master universities. Table 5 shows Washburn s progress since in bringing salaries closer to the average of public master s level institutions. Washburn s average salary in for full professors was $81,441 compared to $88,940 for public master s level institutions. Although the average salary for Washburn professors declined by 0.7% between and , it declined at public master s institutions by 1.0%, allowing Washburn to gain a little ground in bringing salaries closer to the average of public master s. Approximately $367,000 would be needed to bring salaries for Washburn professors to the average for public master s level institutions. Washburn s average salary in for associate professors was $62,124 compared to $71,025 for public master s level institutions. Although Washburn had made some ground between and in bringing salaries for associate professors closer to the average of public master s, the gain has been lost and the gap is increasing; the Washburn 150 Forward: A Strategic Plan for the University s Future approved by the Washburn Board of Regents on April 9, S:\IR\Faculty & Staff\ \Salary Analysis.docx Office of Institutional Research, Washburn University 05/29/2012 6
8 associate professor salaries are now 12.5% below the average. A 14.3% increase or $516,000 would be needed to bring salaries for Washburn associate professors to the average for public master s level institutions. Washburn s average salary in for assistant professors was $54,745 compared to $60,656 for public master s level institutions. Average salaries for assistant professors are now 9.7% below the average of public master s level institutions, losing ground made last year toward achieving average salary parity. A 10.8% increase or $396,000 would be needed to bring salaries for Washburn assistant professors to the average for public master s level institutions. The weighted average salary for full professors, associate professors, and assistant professors at Washburn is lower than the comparable national average for public master s level institutions, and Washburn lost ground toward achieving average salary parity for the fifth year in a row. For Washburn s top three faculty ranks (professor, associate professor, assistant professor), Washburn is now 10.2% below the national average for public master s institutions. The gap now stands at $1,279,000. S:\IR\Faculty & Staff\ \Salary Analysis.docx Office of Institutional Research, Washburn University 05/29/2012 7
