2 The mission of the Central Park Conservancy is to restore, manage, and enhance Central Park in partnership with the public. We aspire to build a great organization that sets the standard for and spreads the principles of world-class park management emphasizing environmental excellence to improve the quality of open space for the enjoyment of all. The Central Park Conservancy is committed to sustaining this operating model to provide a legacy for future generations of park users. Urban Park Maintenance Central Park Conservancy is an international leader in urban park management, having dedicated more than three decades to maintaining Central Park even as up to 250,000 visitors explore the Park on a daily basis. Part of our success in urban park maintenance is the result of a unique zone management system, which separates the Park into 49 zones. A select team, composed of gardeners, arborists, and technicians, is responsible for the care of each zone; the resulting familiarity with the zone s landscapes and regular visitors, along with individual accountability, helps Central Park continue to thrive. Specific maintenance responsibilities include: landscape and lawn maintenance, tree care, horticultural work, graffiti removal, cleaning playgrounds and comfort stations, repairing benches, clearing walkways, cleaning drains and sewers, and maintaining and repairing monuments and certain park structures. Public-Private Partnership Central Park Conservancy was founded in Since 1998, we have managed Central Park pursuant to a written agreement with the City of New York. Our decades-long partnership with New York City has inspired the formation of public-private partnerships in care and support of other parks throughout the world, becoming an internationally recognized example of how conservancies are invaluable assets to municipalities and citizens. Under the management agreement, the City of New York retains ownership and policy responsibility for Central Park; we are responsible for the Park s day-to-day maintenance and operations. Urban Park Restoration Central Park Conservancy s stewardship of the world s foremost urban park began after decades of neglect. In 1980, we became responsible for the restoration and preservation of a diverse array of landscapes, including the famous 16-acre Great Lawn (1997); Literary Walk (2006); Bethesda Terrace Arcade (2007); and the 59th Street Pond (2001). Currently, we are rebuilding and enhancing each of Central Park s 21 playgrounds, as well as restoring the Park s 80 acres of rustic woodlands. Fundraising Central Park Conservancy raises 75 percent of Central Park s annual operating budget through charitable contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government grants. Fundraising staff have a range of skills and areas of expertise in relationship management, grant writing, special events, sponsorship, and planned giving. Through a robust development program we raise operating and capital support for ongoing maintenance and park restoration and preservation. We also provide a diverse menu of public programs in Central Park. Institute of Urban Parks Management The Central Park Conservancy Institute for Urban Parks is the educational arm of Central Park Conservancy. The Institute is home to two centers: the Center for Urban Park Discovery and the Center for Urban Park Management. The Center for Urban Park Discovery enhances how visitors experience Central Park, provides environmental education for children, resources and training for educators, and a variety of lectures and tours for adults. The Center for Urban Park Management shares Central Park Conservancy s expert management techniques with park professionals in New York City and around the world who want to improve their local parks. The Center for Urban Park Management also facilitates the exchange of best management practices among various parks groups to strengthen urban parks and the communities that surround them.

3 Conservancy Stewardship Makes NYC Residents, Economy Healthier As the green heart of one of the world s greatest cities, Central Park always had the potential to be one of the most beloved and visited destinations in the world. But it wasn t until the Central Park Conservancy dedicated itself to the Park s restoration and maintenance that the Park was able to reach its potential. As a result of our work, the Park welcomes 42 million visitors and contributes more than $1 billion to the city s economy every year. Central Park s $1 Billion Effect An independent study shows that Central Park is responsible for more than $1 billion in annual economic activity and revenue for New York. Quality of Life Central Park is much more than a public green space around which many of New York s leading hotels, cultural institutions, and corporate headquarters are concentrated. Economic Activity $390+ million Central Park serves a large local community, with over 1.5 million people living within a short walk or commute. From Real Estate and other Tax Revenues $650+ million $1 Billion 1.15 milllion people living within a 30-minute ride on public transportation 1.5 Million people The Central Park $1 Billion Effect translates into more than 11,000 jobs nearly 4,000 positions from economic activity as well as 7,200 jobs from real estate and other tax revenues. 550,000 people living within a 10-minute walk from Central Park Central Park is also a major source of added value to the City s most valuable real estate. As of 2014 the Central Park effect added $26.07 billion to the market value of properties near the Park a premium equivalent to approximately 8 percent of the total value of all Manhattan real estate.

4 FAQs 1. When and why was Central Park Conservancy founded? Central Park Conservancy was founded in 1980 by a group of civic and philanthropic New Yorkers who were determined to end Central Park s dramatic decline of the 1970s and restore it as America s first and foremost major urban public park. 2. What is your relationship with the City of New York? In 1980, Central Park Conservancy was founded with the purpose of managing the restoration and maintenance of Central Park. Eighteen years later, in 1998, we signed a management agreement with the City of New York, formalizing their public-private partnership and our responsibilities. 3. What are you responsible for? As of 2015, Central Park Conservancy is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and operation of Central Park, along with the continued restoration of its landscapes. Currently, 90 percent of the Park s maintenance and operations staff are employed by Central Park Conservancy, which also provides 75% of Central Park s $65 million annual operating budget. More specifically, Conservancy crews: care for maintain 693 acres of land 9,000 benches 150 acres of lakes and streams 26 ballfields 20,000 trees 21 playgrounds install hundreds of thousands of plantings annually preserve 55 sculptures and monuments 36 arches and bridges remove annually more than 2,200 tons of trash more than 70 tons of recyclables We also operate five visitor centers throughout Central Park, where visitors can get information and resources to enhance their Park experience. 4. What have you accomplished during your 36-year stewardship of Central Park? Since 1980, Central Park Conservancy has overseen the investment of more than $800 million into Central Park, privately raising the vast majority of that amount from individuals, corporations, and foundations. We have developed and implemented a management and restoration plan for the 843-acre Park, created educational and enrichment programs for visitors, and shared our experience in urban park management with other parks throughout New York City and around the world to encourage accessible urban parkland wherever possible. 5. What s next for Central Park Conservancy? Sustaining our restoration of the Park will never end it s a 24/7 job. We are dedicated to making sure the Park never re-enters its historic cycle of restoration and decline. In addition, we are in the midst of two new campaigns. Central Play seeks to fund the renovation and reconstruction of each of Central Park s 21 playgrounds, many of which haven t been updated in decades. The Woodlands Initiative seeks to restore Central Park s 80 acres of woodlands, which play an important role in maintaining the Park s biodiversity and serving as a peaceful respite from the chaos of New York City. We also are excited to continue formally sharing our expertise in urban park management with parks groups around the world.
