REFRESHER to the 17th EDITION & INTRODUCTION to AMENDMENT 3 COURSE 305: 1 DAY: Max 8 Candidates Electrical engineers tend to update their knowledge of the IET Regs each time a new Edition is released by attending a course - for example, the 3 day IET Regs (Course 310). However it can be 10 to 20 years inbetween releases of new Editions and to address this, a short refresher course can be used to reinforce the key technical issues that the candidates should understand in the Regulations and bring them up to date with the latest changes brought about by recent Amendments. PARTICIPANTS Participants should have completed the full 17th Edition course and have passed the City & Guilds assessment incorporated into that course. COURSE PRESENTATION During the presentation, candidates will: explore the most important changes in Amendment 3 using a short slideshow reinforce their knowledge of the fundamental technical points in the 17th Edition Regulations using briefing notes study the key pages in the two Electrician s Guide books (candidates keep a copy of each of these books to take away with them). COURSE OBJECTIVES The course reminds candidates about the fundamental technical requirements of the Regulations as well as bringing them up to date with the latest changes to the Regulations and the associated documents. On completion of the course, participants will understand what Amendments and Corrections have been published since the 17th Edition was released the key changes in Amendment 3 - use of RCDs, the Cmin factor, metallic consumer units, cables in escape routes, the new auxiliary circuits section and changes to the inspection and testing forms the fundamental requirements of the Wiring regulations - the legal status, earthing systems, discrimination, effects of electric shock, how basic protection, fault protection and additional protection should be used, time/current characteristics of fuses and circuit breakers, co-ordination, correction factors, main and supplementary bonding and the inspection and testing requirements. Successful completion of the course leads to the award of the Technical Training Solutions underpinning knowledge certificate 305: 17th Edition Amd 3 Refresher.

What do candidates on the 17th Edition Amendment 3 Refresher course actually do? We begin by looking at the changes brought about by Amendment 3 of the Regulations in We discuss the most interesting changes with the candidates using a series of slides. There are 20 slides or so and some example slides from this part of the course are shown here: explaining the recent history of the regulations listing the changes to the regulations in Amendment 3 that the presentation concentrates on explaining why the definition of 'competent person' has been removed We like to keep slide presentations as short and focused as possible. We present what the changes are, why they have changed and how this might affect the candidates - trying to keep it as interesting and relevant as possible. describing why metal consumer units are now considered necessary in dwellings showing how to protect cables buried in walls discussing the impact of the new section on auxiliary circuits The above presentation takes roughly an hour and a half. Any longer would risk losing the candidates' engagement. We then have some time to discuss the amendments and any concerns the candidates have with them.

We then move on to the 'refresher' part of the course where we go through the main technical requirements of the Regulations, reminding the candidates about the key issues that they should know about in the Regulations. The following are extracts from the course notes for this part of the course: course notes: reminding the candidates about the legal status of the Regulations Page 22 of the 17th edition Amendment 3 Refresher training course notes: explaining the effects of electric shock based on the latest research course notes: describing how additional protection is achieved with RCDs and where they should be used We look at all the key technical areas that they should know about; the legal issues, earthing systems, breaking capacity, discrimination, external Influences, the effects of electric shock, basic protection, earth fault loop impedance, fuse characteristics, circuit breaker characteristics, overcurrents, co-ordination, selection and erection of equipment, selection of conductor size, calculation of voltage drop, isolation & switching, main equipotential bonding and supplementary bonding.

course notes: revising the importance of earth fault loop impedance values course notes: analysing the time/ current characteristics of circuit breakers and fuses Amendment 3 Refresher training course notes: explaining how main bonding is used to create the equipotential zone Obviously the refresher section is severely limited by the time available, but there is enough time to reinforce the importance of these issues and point them in the direction of further help and guidance. Candidates who studied the Regulations many years ago or who, for some other reason, have forgotten most of it should consider attending the full 17th Edition course. In the next part of the course we study the latest versions of the Electricians Guide books. The candidates take a copy of each of these away with them. They contain the latest information and are a useful reference book for future use. In the Electricians Guide to Good Practice Book, we look at: relevant Acts and Regulations, definitions, the design procedure, protection against electric shock, installation of cables, conduit and trunking capacities, earthing, inspection & testing, external influences, standard circuits, the cable reference tables, the special locations and cable colour codes. In the Electricians Guide to Inspection and Testing Book, we look at: initial inspection, initial testing; certificates & schedules for new installations, periodic inspection, periodic testing, reports & schedules for periodic inspection & testing, frequency of inspection and testing and minor works.

The Electricians Guide Book The Electricians Guide Book The Assessment Paper On this course we have the luxury of being able to look at the technical issues without having to worry about the questions that City & Guilds might pose in the examination that usually follows the wiring regs course. However we do need to be confident that the candidates have learned about the key issues of the day in a meaningful way and for this reason we have developed our own assessment paper that they need to answer. The candidates' answers are fully debriefed by our instructors to ensure that everyone has understood the key points of the course. If you would like to see some of the support material used on the 17th edition Amendment 3 Refresher course for yourself, then please call us to arrange a visit to our offices in Kent. Alternatively, we can visit you anywhere in the British Isles.
