1 CLERICAL INSERVICE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Component # Component Title Description Stress Management Develop positive coping skills related to the management of stress Time Management Examine the use of time and explore ways to plan more effectively Office Safety Learn to recognize potential hazards within the office and basic office safety techniques Multicultural Training Understand, value, and show sensitivity to different cultures in the workplace School Law and School Board Rules Learn the legal rights and responsibilities of constitutional, federal, state, local law as it applies to the school system Philosophy Governing Laws and School Board Rules Learn the M-DCPS organizational structure, its governing laws (federal, state, and local) and the underlying philosophy of the system Public Relations Increase public relations awareness as a representative of the school system Computer Literacy Understand the components of a computer system and the common terminology used in computerized word/data processing Communications Learn how to send and receive oral and written messages more effectively Public Speaking Learn how to plan and deliver smooth, convincing, and professional oral presentations Spanish I Introduces listening comprehension and communication in the Spanish language for beginners Spanish II Learn how to function comfortably in the school environment with Spanish students and parents. The use of dialogue will play an important part. Spanish I is a pre-requisite Spanish III Develop confidence in dealing with the Spanish language. An oral approach is used to further help the participant with conversational Spanish. Spanish II is a pre-requisite Spanish IV Improve pronunciation, rhythm, intonation and comprehension in the Spanish language. Spanish III is a pre-requisite.
2 Grammar Skills I Learn standard English grammar as the basis for good writing, speaking, listening, and reading skills Grammar Skills II Expand understanding of standard English grammar as the basis for good writing, speaking, listening, and reading skills Speedwriting I Learn a brief writing system based on the alphabet Speedwriting II Learn to accurately read and write shorthand outlines Speedwriting III Learn to effectively use speedwriting in note taking Speedwriting IV Learn to read, write, and transcribe shorthand outlines at an average speed of 80 words per minute Vitalized Math Increase mathematical competency in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and their application to problem solving Typing I Learn typing skills and remediate typing deficiencies Typing II Improve typing deficiencies through the use of individualized exercises. Typing I is a pre-requisite Upgrading Mathematical Skills Improve the mathematical skills needed to perform daily secretarial tasks. (Use of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and proportions.) Language Skills I Learn standard English when writing or speaking Language Skills II Expand the understanding of standard English and develop proficiency when writing or speaking for business purposes Language Skills III Learn to identify grammatical terms, to use commonly confused words correctly, and punctuate series and appositives correctly Language Skills IV Learn to use the comma, underscore, dash, and parentheses correctly and to distinguish between interrupting and essential expressions Punctuation Skills I Learn standard punctuation usage as the basis for effective and clear written communication Punctuation Skills II Expand the understanding of the rules for word division, correct punctuation for addresses, names, dates and parts of a business letter Grammar Skills III Learn standard English grammar as the basis for good writing, speaking, listening, and reading skills. Learn the basic principles governing the operation of any word processing system. Provide hands-on experience in operating a word processing system. Provide hands-on experience in the techniques involved in constructing and editing text. Word Processing I is a pre-requisite Word Processing III: Accessing/Organizing the Files Provide hands-on experience in the techniques involved in accessing and organizing files.
