Background on the Los Angeles Unified School District CAD standards The Los Angeles Unified School District CAD Standards is based on the AIA CAD Guidelines and the General Services Administration CAD Standards. The Standards Serve as a guide to provide consistency in the production of Architectural & Engineering documents, thereby establishing a common language for the building design and final construction documentation process. The Los Angeles Unified School District CAD Standards will assist in the classification for all projects, regardless of the project type or school site. They will help simply the transfer of information between architects, engineers, and other design team members. They will also reduce preparation time for translation of electronic data files between design team members giving predictable file translation results. The Los Angeles Unified School District CAD Standards is a system for organizing and classifying building design data, including: a system for naming model files, drawing files, and drawing file layers; a system for organizing the drawing set according to a drawing set hierarchy, drawing sheet layout and format, and schedule layout and format; and plotting guidelines. The Los Angeles Unified School District anticipates that not all project documents will fully conform in every respect and detail and that most projects will include variations, nevertheless best efforts should be made to meet the standards set here with-in. The goal of the LAUSD CAD Standards is to do the following: Minimize drawing set-up, review & editing time by Preset Title Blocks & Title Sheets Preset Plan Templates Preset Detail and Schedule sheets Provide consistency of CAD submissions to the LAUSD at various phases of Design As-built submission 3

CAD SOFTWARE The recommended CAD software platform is AutoCAD 2006 or AutoCAD LT equal by Autodesk, Inc. The design standands apply to 2-dimentional drawings for the production the various stages of the design and construction documents process for the Los Angeles Unified School District. 4

QUICK REFERENCE LAUSD ARCHITECTURAL & ENGINEERING CAD STANDARDS DRAWING FORMAT AND GRAPHICS Border Template shall be provided by the Los Angeles Unified School District, Design & A/E Technical Support and should be used in development and submission of all architectural and engineering drawings. (See Diagram page D-1 - D-3 for TITLE BLOCK SHEET) Sheet border, title block, consultant s stamp, logos, and all other components of the master drawing sheet shall be X-referenced into paperspace or layout view. All other graphic representations or entity, notes, dimensions, symbols, etc., shall be constructed in modelspace. TEMPLATES There are several ways to start a drawing from scratch, and one of them is by using a drawing template file. A drawing template file contains standard settings, i.e. units of measurement, format, precision, to name a few. (See Diagram page D-9 D-14 for TEMPLATES) There are 5 basic drawing template files created for the architectural standards: Title sheet (shown with a suggested layout format) Plan (shown in different layout scales) Elevation/section (shown in different layout scales) Details (shown in different layout scales) Schedules (shown with a suggested layout format) Embedded Text styles and Dimension styles: (See Diagram page D-11 for TEXTSTYLES) (See Diagram page D-12 for DIMENSIONSTYLES) For text representations in the drawing which could be scale dependent: (Please see Text style and Dimension style chart. Other text styles not listed in the chart were part of block entities). 6

Embedded Layers: (See Diagram page D-4, D-8, and D-10 for LAYERS) The naming conventions for the Layers is based on the AIA format, but has been streamlined to be more efficient for use on typical LAUSD new and renovation projects. The goal is to limit excessive use of layers. In order to facilitate the review of and revisions to drawings additional layers may be included as needed but should follow the layer naming convention for the discipline. The template with the most layers has about 78 embedded layers but most of these were derived from a list of core layers as shown in the chart for LAUSD Architectural Default CAD Layers with corresponding description for its use. These layers are assigned colors and linotypes. (An extended list of layers can be found CAD Standards Layer Name Index) Embedded plot style: Plot styles have been predetermined and preset for ease and consistency of use in the plotted drawing. Base Plan Drawing: (See Diagram page D-9 for BASEPLAN) The Base Plan should be constructed in model space and should be EX-REFERENCED into all architectural and other discipline drawings. The Base Plan should only be modified once to reflect changes on all drawings rather then making changes on multiple sheets of the same Base Plan. The Base Plan should consist of exterior walls, glazing and interior walls that are not be modified or items that are to remain fixed on a site and will need to appear on multiple sheets should appear on a Base Plan. 7

SHEET NAMING REFERENCE A Drawing Drawing Designator 1- Discipline Discipline Designator 3- Page Page Designator 1. The first letter is the Discipline Designator, 2. The first number from 1 thru 11 are the Drawing Designator 3. The last 2 digits are the Page Designator. The Sheet Index for an Architectural set of drawings shown below: A 1.00 and on for Cover sheet and general data o Cover, index, codes, maps, scope, stamps, building summary & etc. A 2.00 and on for Site info, site plan and site details (Demo and New) A 3.00 and on for Building floor plans, ceiling plans, roof plans, enlarged plans and partial plans (Demo and New) A 4.00 and on for Exterior elevations (Demo and New) A 5.00 and on for Building sections, and wall sections (Demo and New) A 6.00 and on for Interior elevations (Demo and New) A 7.00 and on for All schedule included door schedule, window schedule and hardware schedules. A 8.00 and on for All vertical circulation info like plans, sections, details for stairways and elevators. A 9.00 and on for standard LAUSD-DSA details o ADA parking, signage, drinking fountain, toilets, path of travel, structural and elevator details. A and on for miscellaneous details A and on is user defined Applying this index pattern to the other disciplines, all that needs to be changed is the Discipline Indicator: A - Architectural drawings S Structural drawings M Mechanical drawings P Plumbing drawings E Electrical drawings FA- Fire Alarm drawings C Civil drawings L Landscaping drawings 8

If a particular discipline does not use a specific drawing, the particular Drawing Indicator shall be skipped to remain consistent with the sheet index pattern. Whenever applicable, the Drawing and Page Indicators should be the same for a design package that contains 2 or more disciplines. Example is an architectural plan drawing (A-3.01) used as background for structural plan drawing (S-3.01), for mechanical layout drawing (M-3.01), for plumbing layout drawing (P-3.01), for electrical plan drawing (E-3.01) and for fire alarm system layout drawing (FA-3.01). 9

Include ALL files, both graphic and non-graphic, required for accessing and using the project submittal drawings (e.g., color tables, pen tables, plot files) in the CD-ROM. 11

3.1 FILE TYPES Both text and graphic type files will be included in the electronic data deliverables TEXT FILES File descriptions are to be saved in Microsoft Word text format. Specifications shall be delivered in Microsoft Word format. Contact the LAUSD to determine the latest acceptable version of the file format DRAWING FILES There are two distinct types of CAD files addressed in these standards: sheet files and model files. A sheet file is synonymous to a plotted CAD drawing file. A sheet file is the selected view of the model file(s) within a border sheet. Sheet files are plotted at full scale (1=1), since the model file files are referenced into the sheet at a particular scale ratio. In other words a sheet file is a ready-to plot CAD file. A model file contains the physical components of a project. Model files are drawn at full scale and typically represent plans, elevations, sections, etc. Note: A sheet file shall be created with AutoCAD Paper Space. 3.2 FILE INFORMATION All information included in hard copy submittals shall be included in electronic data deliverables. Drawings relying on reference files are to include a list of dependent reference files on the title block. Any reference files or block files pertinent to the content of the master file are required data and are to be included on the File Description. 3.3 FILE FORMAT All submittals shall incorporate good drafting practices and organize information clearly and systematically. Examples of acceptable organization of drawing information are shown in Submittal Prototype Templates. 3.4 FILE SIZE AND ORGANIZATION It is the responsibility of the design professional to organize drawing information coherently and to maintain reasonable file sizes. 12

3.5 COPY AND COMPRESSION FORMAT Files shall be copied directly to the Windows formatted CD-ROM. No other formats will be acceptable. No compression or archive utilities are allowed. 3.6 REFERENCE FILES Drawings using reference files are to list referenced files on the title block layer. This list will give an account of dependent files for the complete document. This information will also be added to the file description for master files, refer to section 2.2. In all submittals reference files shall be located in the same directory as the dependent files. 3.7 DOCUMENT FILE FORMAT Each hard copy submittal sheet shall have a corresponding electronic drawing file saved in a plot-ready format. Document files shall be formatted utilizing paper space. Plotting shall be set to plot a view named plot with a plot scale of 1 =1 formatted to match the hard copy submittals. 3.8 FILE NAMING All files included in the electronic data deliverable package will conform to a logical file naming convention. See File Naming Section. 4.0 DRAWING FORMATS & GRAPHICS Sheet border, title block, consultant s stamp, logos and all other components of the master drawing sheet shall be located in Model Space and X-Reference into paper space using 0,0 on the x,y coordinate. All graphic representations of the project or facility and all related notes, dimensions, symbols, etc., shall be constructed in model space. 4.1 STANDARD COORDINATE SYSTEM The World Coordinate System shall correspond to the California Coordinate System NAD 83 for all civil, map and campus plan (including the School Site Master Plans files. Where necessary for compositing drawings on a sheet, a user coordinate system named "PLAN VIEW" shall be established. 4.2 PROTOTYPE DRAWING FILES Prototype drawing files and symbols shall be utilized when provided by the LAUSD. These may include but are not be limited to; typical title sheets, formatted drawing files, drawing symbology and other blocks. When blocks contain attributes, all relevant attribute fields are to be filled out. 13

4.3 STANDARD SHEET SIZES AND FORMATS All sheet sizes are to be limited to standard formats. Required sheet size is specific to each project and is under the discretion of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The preferred sheet size is D Sized Plot 24 x 36. They are as follows: A Sized Plot 8 1/2 x11 B Sized Plot 11 x17 C Sized Plot 18 x 24 D Sized Plot 24 x 36 - Preferred Size E Sized Plot 36 x 48 E1 Sized Plot 30 x GRAPHICS All graphic entities shall be comprised of representational and geometrically accurate entities, e.g. a circle shall be represented by circle entity and NOT a visually equivalent collection of line segments. All graphics representing the actual physical components of the project, e.g. walls or doors, shall be drawn at full scale. Continuous linear elements such as contour lines, or curb lines, shall be constructed with polylines. Items shown in a dashed line type shall be created with the LINETYPE feature and NOT by individual line elements TEXT All text is to be created only with the standard AutoCAD's font files: eg. Romans, romand, Ariel Custom or third party fonts are not acceptable SPECIAL ENTITY REQUIREMENTS (BLOCKS) Common symbols, doors, W.C.s, windows, equipment, etc., shall be blocks.(see below) design professionals shall use predefined symbols and blocks when provided by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Entities to be shown as blocks All Plumbing & Bath Fixtures e.g., water closets, urinals, lavatories, tubs, grab bars, accessories, mirrors All Electrical Devices & Hardware e.g., lighting fixtures, switches, outlets, panels 14

Mechanical Equipment e.g., supply diffusers, return grilles, thermostats, air handlers chillers, pumps boilers, heat exchangers Doors (insert with scale set to door size) Windows (insert with scale to window size) Equipment, type I and II Furniture Drawing Symbols Door and window marks, room # indicators, scale indicators, north arrows RASTER GRAPHICS Raster files shall not be used to represent the project geometry, e.g. building plans. Other drawings shall not be scanned and inserted as raster files. Raster files may be used for the incorporation of existing condition photos or similar applications. Any raster file included in a drawing shall be placed on its own layer. 4.5 DIMENSIONING All dimensions shown in the project submittals shall be fully associative. Dimension definition points should be located with an appropriate Object Snap (End Point, Mid Point, etc.) or otherwise located precisely on the project geometry. Manual input of dimension text or otherwise overriding the actual dimensions is NOT acceptable. 4.6 FILL AND HATCH PATTERNS Excessive use of hatch patterns should be limited to avoid unnecessarily large files. All design professionals are responsible for keeping files sizes within reasonable limits. A solid hatch shall be created by only using AutoCAD SOLID hatch pattern, or with the SOLID command. Using dense hatch patterns to create solid fill shall not be permitted in the drawing set. 4.7 LINE WEIGHTS AND PEN ASSIGNMENTS CAD drawing templates have been developed for the various disclipanes and should be applied to submittals to the Los Angeles Unified School District when possible. Drawings should be graphically clear and legible. Although best efforts have been made to develop a simple and easy to use template, the design professionals are responsible for the production and appearance of their hard copy submittals. See CAD drawings templates for further explanation. 5.0 LAYERING All layering names and information within shall coincide with the following guidelines. Only applicable layers are to be used. Blank layers are not to be included in the electronic data deliverables. If reference files are used, please refer to section

Graphic representations of related items shall be located on a single layer even when indicated on different drawings, e.g., full height walls could be properly shown as A-WALL or A-WALLFULL, not both. Graphic indicators for text and notes, e.g., header line and arrowheads for a note, shall be located on the same layer as the corresponding text. Major group headings shall define the layer s discipline as follows: A = Architectural C = Civil E = Electrical F = Fire Protection L = Landscape M = Mechanical P = Plumbing Q = Communications S = Structural 5.1 LAYER GUIDELINES BY DISCIPLINE The organization of layer names by discipline is merely a convenience to aid in finding the appropriate layer. For example: A-DOOR is the only acceptable layer for indicating a door in all disciplines Electrical Plans, Plumbing Plans etc. By the same logic E-LITE-EXIT is the only acceptable layer for indicating an exit light in an architectural drawing. These discipline-specific guidelines shall be used whenever possible. Use the Los Angeles Unified School District templates provided as much as possible. Add layers as necessary, but limit use of unnecessary layers. See Pages LAYER INDEX for extended layers names. Use these layer names when expanding the layers in your drawing. 5.2 PROTOTYPE SUBMITTALS SMALL BUILDING RENOVATION PROJECT PROTOTYPE SUBMITTAL A -SMALL BUILDING RENOVATION PROJECT PROTOTYPE SUBMITTAL The following submittal prototype would be appropriate for a smaller project with a single designer or a small design team. Hard copy Submittals Drawings A2.1 Floor Plan with Door Schedule A2.2 Equipment and Case Work Plan and Schedule 16

A3.1 Interior Elevations and Sections A5.1 Architectural Ceiling Plan A9.1 Construction Details E2.1 Electrical Plan (with half toned floor plan) and Fixture Schedule Paper space contains X-Referenced drawing border and title block information. MAJOR BUILDING PROJECT CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT SET B- MAJOR BUILDING PROJECT CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT SET The following submittal type differs from the previous type A in that rather than maintain a common database via a master model the complete database (or model) is contained in a series of discipline-specific files with reference to other discipline files. The ultimate database is equally complete and free of redundancies but more amenable to a diverse and widespread design group that would need to work on the files simultaneously. 17
