Support Note # 32 for Widex software products Fourth edition, July 2008 Installing Compass software under Windows Vista This support note contains information about installing Compass and programming interface software under the Windows Vista operating system. The support note contains the following sections: Introduction to Windows Vista... 1 Versions of Vista... 1 Main new features... 2 Install NOAHlink... 3 Install HI-PRO... 7 Install Compass NOAHlink and Compass Install LifeSounds Introduction to Windows Vista Windows Vista is Microsoft s next generation operating system and was released in January There are two categories of Windows Vista platforms: Home and Business. Under each of the categories there are several different versions of the operating system. Versions of Vista The Home category of Windows Vista includes the following versions: Vista Home Basic Vista Home Premium Vista Ultimate The Business category of Windows Vista includes the following versions: Vista Business Vista Enterprise Windows Vista Business is roughly analogous to Windows XP Professional and provides the functionality expected in a business environment, such as support for non-microsoft networking protocols and Domain support. Page 1 of 12
Windows Vista Enterprise is designed for the larger global organisations with a more complex IT infrastructure. Windows Vista Ultimate Edition is a combination of Vista Home Premium and Vista Business Edition. It includes all of the features of both product versions, but also adds gaming experiences and is therefore categorised under the Home category. Main new features Windows Vista has many new features, such as the redesigned user interface and visual style named Aero, Windows Flip 3D, Windows Sidebar and Gadgets. The searching technology has been improved, networking, audio and print have been completely redesigned, and a number of new security features have been added. Windows Vista builds on the security features from Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 and adds a number of security improvements. Windows Vista informs users about security and privacy choices so they feel more confident that they are as secure as possible, and that their privacy is protected. The User Account Control (UAC) is designed to help prevent unauthorized program access, unauthorized installation of programs, phishing, spying or other malicious changes from being made to the computer. The UAC displays a dialog box and asks for consent any time an action that requires administrative approval is initiated. When the UAC needs attention, it suspends access to the desktop by fading it to a dim grey and displays a consent dialog box in sharp relief. Until the consent request has been dealt with, the user cannot do anything else. A consent request can be initiated by double-clicking an icon that runs an installer or updater program. Based on the file name and content of the file, the dialog box depends on two factors: whether the program is digitally signed and whether the user logged on is a member of the administrator group. If the user is not a member of the administrator group, a password for an administrator account must be supplied in the dialog box. If the program is digitally signed, the dialog box shows a blue bar and a Windows shield icon. If the file is not digitally signed, the dialog box shows a bright orange bar and a bright red question mark on the shield icon. Other consent requests can be initiated when the user adjusts the Windows configuration, creates a new file in a system folder, or deletes, moves or renames a file in a drive or folder which is restricted to administrators or to which the user does not have explicit rights. Whenever an attempt is made to run a program or utility that will change the way the operating system works or will affect other user accounts on the computer, a dialog box is shown asking for consent to continue. Page 2 of 12
UAC will not stop the user from running any programs, it only asks the user to allow or deny access to system level functions for the programs and thus making the operating system safer. UAC is, by default, enabled when Windows is installed. It can be disabled from the user accounts under the Control Panel, but it is recommended to keep it enabled. When you are working with the Windows Vista operating system, some features work differently from what you are used to in other operating systems. Below is a description of how to install the programming interfaces (NOAHlink and HI-PRO) and Compass under Windows Vista. The descriptions below are all made from the default setting of Windows Vista. This means that User Account Control is turned on, and that none of the settings under the Control panel have been changed. Install NOAHlink Below is a description of how to install the NOAHlink programming interface. The illustrations show an installation of the NOAHlink Properties program version If you are using a version prior to this please find the appropriate installation information in the 1. edition support note #32. You can install NOAHlink while you are logged on as an administrator or as a standard user. In this document, the generic Bluetooth driver from Windows Vista is used. The only drawback in connection with this driver is that every time the Bluetooth adapter is unplugged and inserted into another USB port than the one it was unplugged from, the COM port assigned will be of a higher number than before. This means that if you move the Bluetooth adapter, you have to open the NOAHlink Properties program, search for and connect to the NOAHlink again before you can use it. Your Bluetooth adapter must be compatible with the Windows Vista generic driver. If your adapter is not supported, we recommend that you buy a new adapter. Follow this procedure to install the Bluetooth adapter: 1. Insert the Bluetooth adapter into a free USB port on the computer. Windows Vista automatically installs the software. You can see this at the bottom right corner of the screen. Note: If the Found new hardware wizard opens and asks you for a driver, your adapter is not supported. We recommend that you buy a new Microsoft compliant USB Bluetooth adapter. 2. When Windows Vista has finished installing the driver, you will see a Bluetooth icon in the lower right corner of the screen. Page 3 of 12
Follow this procedure to install your NOAHlink: 3. Insert the NOAHlink Properties CD-ROM into the CD/DVD drive. If the CD does not start up automatically, click the Vista logo at the bottom left corner of your screen, and select Computer in the menu to the right. Right-click the CD/DVD drive, and select Open AutoPlay. When you have inserted the CD-ROM, this window appears on your screen: 4. Select Run setup.exe to continue. 5. If you are logged on as an administrator, you will be presented with the window below. Select Continue to continue. Page 4 of 12
If you are logged on as a standard user, you have to provide an administrator password before you can continue. In that case, write the password, and select OK. 6. The NOAHlink installation starts. Select the desired language, and select Next to continue. 7. Because the installation runs under Windows Vista you are not presented with a window where you can choose whether you want to install both the Bluetooth driver and the NOAHlink Properties program or only the NOAHlink Properties program. The installation program only installs the NOAHlink Properties program, so just select Next to continue. 8. When the installation is complete, you are presented with an option to run a Pairing Wizard. Leave the Run the Pairing Wizard check box selected, and select Finish to continue. 9. This starts the NOAHlink Paring Wizard. Turn on your NOAHlink, and select Search to continue. The wizard searches for and lists available NOAHlinks. Page 5 of 12
10. The wizard now pairs the NOAHlink and installs the rest of the software. It then adds the Bluetooth port to the system and shows a message box. Select OK to close the message box. 11. Select Close in the NOAHlink Pairing Wizard to end the installation. Before you can start using your NOAHlink, you must open the NOAHlink Properties program, search for and connect to the NOAHlink. Do the following: 12. Select the Windows Vista icon at the bottom left corner of your screen, select All Programs, select NOAHlink, and then select NOAHlink Properties. 13. Select the Search button to find your NOAHlink. 14. When the program has found the NOAHlink, select it, and select Connect. Page 6 of 12
15. Select Disconnect to disconnect NOAHlink again. The status now indicates that your NOAHlink is Available and ready to use. 16. Select OK to end the registration process and close the dialog box. Install HI-PRO The HI-PRO cannot be used in Windows Vista with the existing drivers. However, GN Otometrics has released a HI-PRO USB version. In connection with this release, a new driver has also been released. Installing this driver under Windows Vista enables the use of the existing HI-PRO as well. This guide explains how to install HI-PRO under Windows Vista. The illustrations show the HI-PRO SW Installation CD, Version so what you see on your screen may vary a little from the illustrations. You can install the HI-PRO while you are logged on as an administrator or as a standard user. Follow this procedure to install the HI-PRO: 1. Insert the HI-PRO CD-ROM into the CD/DVD drive. If the CD does not start up automatically, click the Vista logo at the bottom left corner of your screen, and select Computer in the menu to the right. Right-click the CD/DVD drive, and select Open AutoPlay. 2. Select Run setup.exe to continue. 3. If you are logged on as an administrator, you will be presented with the window below. Select Allow. I trust this program. to continue. Page 7 of 12
If you are logged on as a standard user, you have to provide an administrator password before you can continue. In that case, write the password, and select OK. The HI-PRO setup wizard appears on your screen. 4. Select Next, select the destination folder and select Next two times more. The installation starts. 5. Select the desired language, and select the Classic HI-PRO radio button. Select OK to continue. Page 8 of 12
6. Select COM port cable to the PC, and make sure that the HI-PRO is on. Then select Next to continue. The wizard searches for the HI-PRO and displays the result. 7. Since the driver is delivered together with new HI-PRO firmware, you must select Next to upgrade to the new firmware. 8. Select Next to start the upgrade process. 9. When the upgrade has finished, a dialog box shows you the new version number. Select Finish to end the HI-PRO configuration. Page 9 of 12
This ends the installation and configuration of the HI-PRO 3.00 driver. You can now use the HI- PRO together with Compass. Install Compass Below is a description of how to install Compass under Windows Vista. You can install Compass while you are logged on as an administrator or as a standard user. Follow this procedure to install Compass: 1. Insert the Compass CD-ROM into the CD/DVD drive. If you are logged on as a standard user, you have to provide an administrator password before you can continue. In that case, write the password, and select OK. 4. The Compass Installation window appears. Select Install Compass or Install 3D Tutor from the menu, and install the programs following the instructions on your screen, as you would do under any other operating system. Once you have installed Compass, it is ready to use. Page 10 of 12
NOAHlink and Compass If you have a NOAHlink and no HI-PRO, you may see an error the first time you close Compass after having used your NOAHlink. If you see this message, you should select the option This program works correctly in order to tell Windows Vista that you accept the program. Once you have accepted the Compass program, you will not see the message again. Install LifeSounds Below is a description of how to install the Widex LifeSounds module under Windows Vista. Note that you must have installed Compass before you can install the LifeSounds module. Important: To install and use the Widex LifeSounds V1.1 module under Windows Vista, you have to be logged in as an administrator. Only as an administrator you have the correct access rights to the Vista file system. Important: Under Windows Vista you can only use Widex LifeSounds V1.1 without a calibration. If you try to calibrate, you receive the message Cannot calibrate under Vista. This is because you need full access to the sound system in order to make a calibration, and Vista does not allow this with the present version of LifeSounds. Follow this procedure to install LifeSounds: 1. Insert the first LifeSounds CD-ROM into the CD/DVD drive. If the CD does not start up automatically, click the Vista logo at the bottom left corner of your screen, and select Computer in the menu to the right. Right-click the CD/DVD drive, and select Open AutoPlay. 2. Select Run setup.exe to continue. Page 11 of 12
3. The window below appears. Select Allow. I trust this program. to continue. 4. The LifeSounds Installation window appears. Select Install LifeSounds from the menu, and install the program following the instructions on your screen, as you would do under any other operating system. 5. When you have finished installing the LifeSounds module, open Compass. 6. To open LifeSounds from within Compass, click the Open LifeSounds icon in the Toptool bar, or select LifeSounds from Tools menu. If you need help to use LifeSounds, please see the LifeSounds help system or quick guides. Page 12 of 12
