2 Synopsis Elizabeth and John are going to the country for the summer to stay with their aunt and uncle. Elizabeth wants something exciting to happen this summer and she starts by giving her brother and her new names. She chooses the name Geeder for herself and Toeboy for her brother. The first night at their uncle s farm they sleep outside. During the night Geeder wakes up and sees what appears to be a person floating down the road. She later learns it was Zeely, the hog keeper s daughter. Geeder imagines that Zeely is an African Queen and who had the power to make Elizabeth a princess. Zeely eventually talks to Geeder and explains that imaging is fun to do but it should not become more real that life is. Elizabeth returns to her family the same on the outside, but having learned more about herself and life.

What does stench mean? the stench of the hogs was overpowering. 4. Why do you think that Zeely came to see Geeder? 5. Why did Toeboy feel he didn t always have to be talking with Uncle Ross when they were together? 6. Zeely said that Geeder was a lot like her at the same age. Are you more like Geeder or different than her? Explain your answer. (The answer should include something about how Geeder acts or behaves not the fact that she is a girl)
