Our programs range from a high tech STEM education center, to an 1800 s living history program and everything in between. All the details about this years program are right here for your convenience. 2 Changes from last year: We ve really put our heads together to keep the best elements of last years program and to find solutions to some long standing stumbling blocks. CFR Labs will now be open program for several of it s badges. We have also added several new badges to the area. CFR Labs second big change is moving to a new space. This year they will be in Franklin Lodge, offering them more space running water and most importantly a stable internet connection to help support the teaching of the computers related badges. Brownsea will also be moving down the hill, into the lower parade field. This will give them more than enough space to spread out into patrols and will reduce distractions from closely neighboring areas. Scoutmasters will also get some new space. We are opening Sequoia Top as an Scoutmaster lounge, with coffee and internet. The porch is a great place to sit and watch you scouts paddle across the lake, or look across at Brownsea. Sequoia Lodge bottom will be the new home for First Aid and E Prep. MBs, and we will also be expanding the Red Cross course offerings on camp to include First Aid and Wilderness First Aid. We are working with and retraining our staff to ensure requirements are met in full. About Open Program You will notice that many merit badges fall under open program. This is designed to meet the needs of individual scouts by eliminating large classes and concentrating on more personal instruction. Scouts will be able to work at their own pace without the constraints of block schedules. With open program scouts can come and go in a program area as needed, and can start merit badges at any point in the week. A few program areas (such as aquatics) have retained a more rigid schedule. This is primarily due to safety concerns and limited resources. The structured schedule classes are especially helpful for boys who like working in a class type setting with other people or who need some help getting motivated to work on badges. 2

3 Aquatics: Nothing feels better on a hot summer afternoon than a dip in the pool or the splash from your paddle. Camp Falling Rock offers a wide range of aquatics program and merit badges both at the pool and the lakefront, as well as open times when scouts can just come and enjoy the water. Pool Schedule: Lifesaving MB will be offered in two sessions: 9:00 10:30, every day 10:30 12:00, every day Swimming MB will be offered in three sessions: 9:00 10:00, every day 10:00 11:00, every day 11:00 12:00, every day Instructional Swim 2:00 3:00, every day BSA Snorkel will be offered in one session: 2:00 3:00, every day Open Swim: 3:00 5:00, every day BSA Lifeguard Certification 9:00 12:00 AND 2:00 5:00, every day Lakefront Schedule: Canoeing MB: 9:00 10:00, every day 10:00 11:00, every day Kayaking MB and BSA Kayak Award will be offered concurrently: 10:00 11:00, every day 11:00 12:00, every day Motorboating MB: 11:00 12:00, every day Rowing MB: 9:00 10:00, every day 3

4 Brownsea Our Brownsea program gives first year scouts an opportunity to focus on rank requirements, and to build their basic skills. Scouts participating in the program will earn their Firem n Chit and Totin Chip, and complete several requirements for the Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks. They will also complete Art MB and have some free time to pursue merit badges in the open program areas. The program climaxes at the end of the week with an overnight adventure CFR s back forty. Scouts should bring to camp with them a bag or small pack to carry their sleeping gear. Camp staff does not generally sign requirements in a scouts book, this being the role of troop leadership, but we will provide a letter detailing the requirements completed and the skills taught for the troop to review with the scout. Brownsea runs all day but has free time scheduled. In general scouts meet from 9:00 until 11:00 and then from 2:00 until 4:00. However these times are flexible and subject to change based on each patrol s progress. CFR Laboratories CFR Labs is one of our most popular program areas on camp, offering many badges not typically expected to be a part of the camp experience. This year several of CFR Labs merit badges will be offered in open program, with a few more challenging badges still keeping the structured format. 5 CFR Labs Scheduled Merit Badges: Chemistry will be offered in two sessions 9:00 10:00 am, every day 2:00 3:00 pm, every day Electricity 10:00 11:00 am, every day 4:00 5:00 pm, every day Electronics 11:00 12:00, am, every day 3:00 4:00 pm, every day Nuclear science 10:00 11:00 am, every day 3:00 4:00 pm, every day Climbing Falling Rock is fortunate to have a natural rappelling site as well as a 40+ foot climbing/rappelling wall. To provide a varied experience to the Scouts, the cliffs will be used for rappelling only on Thursday. The wall will be open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday for climbing and rappelling. All participants must use camp climbing/rappelling equipment. NO personal gear is permitted. Climbing Merit Badge will be offered in two sessions: 10:00 12:00 pm, every day 2:00 4:00 pm, every day First Aid This year our First Aid program is going to be better than ever. We have expanded our offerings to include Wilderness First Aid in addition to First Aid and Emergency Preparedness Merit badges. We will also offer Red Cross trainings in CPR and First Aid. This year we will be housing the First Aid program in the lower floor of Sequoia Lodge. Wilderness First Aid: 9:30 11:00 and 2:00 3:00, every day some additional times throughout the week will be required 5

6 First Aid Merit Badge will be offered in two sessions: 11:00 12:00pm, every day 4:00 5:00 pm, every day Emergency Preparedness will be offered once: 3:00 4:00 every day Red Cross First Aid will be offered once: 2:00 3:00 pm CPR for the Professional Rescuer will be offered on an as needed basis Foxfire: The Foxfire Trading Company is an immersive experience into life on the Ohio Frontier. Scouts may either visit the area during program time or they may choose to send the week living as mountain men and learning the ways of the frontier. Activities include candle making, blacksmithing, tomahawk throwing, crafting, and much more. The full time program requires a $40 fee that provides a mountain man shirt and covers food costs for the week. Scouts in the full time program will have the opportunity to complete cooking and metalworking merit badges and may have time to pursue other opportunities in camp. Preregistration is strongly encouraged. Handicarft Handicraft is a popular area especially with younger scouts. many of the offered merit badges are shorter in length and scouts can always find something fun and engaging to do here. All the merit badges are offered in open program. Merit badges include; Art Basketry Indian Lore Leatherwork Painting Pottery Textiles Woodcarving There may also be opportunities to tye dye so be sure to bring a plain white cotton shirt. 6

7 Nature Camp Falling Rock offers "nature" at its best. Our nature/ecology and conservation area is where you can establish or strengthen your connection with nature. Come see what indigenous species are spending the summer at the nature center. Determine which of our "mounted critters" you might encounter around camp. Nature offers the widest section of merit badges on camp, all as open programs. Merit badges include: Astronomy Bird Study Dog Care Environmental Science Fish & Wildlife Management Fishing Fly Fishing Forestry Geology Insect Study Mammal Study Nature Oceanography Pets Plant Science Pulp & Paper Reptile & Amphibian Study Soil & Water Conservation Weather. Shooting Sports: BANG BANG, TWANG. One of the favorite parts of camps for many scouts is shooting sports. Come try your hand at archery or on the rifle range. During our open times, or come take any of the three shooting sports merit badges. 7

8 Archery will be offered in four sessions: 9:00 10:00 am, every day 10:00 11:00 am, every day 11:00 12:00 pm, every day 2:00 3:00 pm, every day Open Archery will be held from: 3:00 5:00 pm, may be restricted to merit badge later in the week Rifle Shooting Merit Badge will be offered in three sessions: 9:00 10:00 am, every day 10:00 11:00 am, every day 11:00 12:00 pm, every day Open Rifle will be held from 2:00 4:00 pm, may be restricted to merit badge later in the week Shotgun Shooting Merit Badge will be offered in one session: 4:00 5:00 pm, every day Scoutcraft Scoutcraft is the core of the camp program. Meet with our skilled instructors to hone your basic scout skills. We offer a number of merit badges including several Eagle required. Or join us Thursday night for the wilderness survival challenge, and test your mettle against CFR s deep woods. All of our merit badges are offered open program, also offered is any rank requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class or First Class that a scout may have floating about even if they are too advanced for the full Brownsea experience. 9 Scoutmaster Programs Camp is not just for the kids, adults this is your week too. Throughout the week we will be offering a wide variety of trainings including Scoutmaster Basic Training, Introduction to Outdoor Skills, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Climb On Safety, and more. Or perhaps you want to take on a new certification and pursue Wilderness First Aid or another certification. Adults are also invited to participate in any of our scout programs to hone their skills and bring their new knowledge home to their troops. National Accreditation All Simon Kenton Council summer camps are accredited by the Boy Scouts of America. Visited annually by a team knowledgeable and trained in camping standards, our camps maintain a top rating for their facilities, programs, and staff. Rules for acceptance and participation in the programs are the same for everyone without regard to race, color, age, handicap, or national origin. 9
