2 Introduction A New and Systematic scaffolding known as Metal-Bamboo Matrix System Scaffold (MBMSS) has been developed and is fast finding wide usage in the Hong Kong construction industry. As the pioneer of scaffolding industry in Hong Kong, Wui Loong Scaffolding Works Company Ltd. is developing, manufacturing and marketing MBMSS in many different construction sites (Refer to Hong Kong Project Reference List) since The principle of MBMSS is the combination of both the characteristics of metal scaffolding and bamboo scaffolding (Table 1). It comprises of steel pipes (60%) and bamboo poles (40%), which is designed based on well-proven technology to comply with safety standards. The design and structural stability of the MBMSS has already been checked and verified by the Professors (RPE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The steel pipes of MBMSS are used as main poles and ledgers for supporting loading. This structure can provide much stable, secure and reliable scaffolding for workers as compared with bamboo scaffolding. The purpose of using bamboo poles in MBMSS is to reduce the loading of scaffolding and to increase its flexibility. MBMSS provides flexibility and adaptability to various building structures with different requirements resulting in enhanced productivity and efficiency than that offered by metal system scaffolding. Incorporating other components, such as catwalks, toeboards and staircases which are specially designed, MBMSS provides stable and safe working environment and access for workers performing duties on it. Furthermore, it fully complies with various construction regulations. Table 1. 3 S caffold is a very common type of construction equipment that is used in many construction sites for both the external and internal works at height. In Hong Kong, bamboo scaffolding is the mainstream in the past. However, due to the poor and inconsistent quality of bamboo itself, report on bamboo scaffolding related accidents is increasing. Therefore, Wui Loong, as a pioneer in bamboo scaffolding business in Hong Kong, has designed a new set of scaffolding system Metal-Bamboo Matrix System Scaffold. Metal tubes are used as the main framework in the new system which provides a much more secure and reliable working environment for workers working at height. The details of the MBMSS are described in brief as follows:- Framework Metal-Bamboo Matrix System Scaffold is composed of two layers (Fig.1) similar to the traditional metal or bamboo scaffolding. For the outer layer, metal tubes are used as the main posts and main ledgers for maximum support, while keeping the other members using bamboo to minimize the loading. For the outer layer, bamboo is used as guardrail and fencing. Bamboo is used for the inner layer (Fig.2) in areas with the transoms. All posts and ledgers are constructed with metal tubes. All braces are metal tubes connected by clamps at 60 subjected to different site situation. 4 Connections (Fig. 3) The connections between metal tubes are secured by clamps. The plastic ties are used for the linkage between bamboo / bamboo and bamboo / metal tubes. Clamp Cover (Fig.3) Clamp covers (optional item) are used to protect the clamps from contamination, such as concrete, paint and oil. It will ensure that the dismantling process will not be delayed from contamination in the course of construction. Putlog (Fig. 4) A new type of putlog is specially designed for the connections between the posts (metal tubes) of the scaffold and the building façade. Being secured with clamps on the layers and by installing anchor bolt in building façade, the putlog serves the purpose of restricting the scaffold from any movement. 5 Metal-Bamboo Matrix System scaffold Steel bracket (Fig. 5) Similar to bamboo scaffolding, steel brackets are installed to concrete wall to withstand the loading of the scaffold. The maximum interval of steel bracket is 24 m height and 3 m width c/c. Fig. 5 Steel bracket Catwalk (Fig. 6) Different sizes of catwalks are installed on the scaffold to serve as working platforms. As required by the labour law in Hong Kong, toe boards are also installed to avoid fall of objects from the catwalk. Fig. 6 Catwalk and Toeboards Staircase Tower(Fig. 7) Staircase Towers are installed on the scaffold to provide the safest way for the workers moving from one level to another level instead of climbing the scaffold.
