1 van Wyhe, English 9 Unit Plans The Calhoun School Unit 1 Introduction to English: Life at the Crossroads (Short Stories & Poetry) Enduring Understandings Essential Questions Unit Length: 15 Days 1. Reading is an active process. 1. What do good readers do? Summative: ACT Test Prep; Chunking Text; Quotation Connection; STEAL Chart; Interactive Notebooks. Formative: 5-paragraph essay comparing and contrasting 1 of the themes discussed in this unit to a lesson you have learned in your life. Unit 2 Introduction to Research: Living with Change Enduring Understandings 1. Readers respond to text by employing personal experiences and critical analysis before, during, and after reading. 2. Writers compose in a variety of modes by developing content, employing specific forms, and selecting language appropriate for a particular audience and purpose. 3. Writers control language by applying the conventions of Standard English in writing and speaking. 4. Readers and writers evaluate the content, organization, and language use of texts. Essential Questions 1. How do I read, respond to, and analyze texts? 2. What is the purpose of writing and how do I do it in different ways?

2 3. How do words and language work and how can I use them to my advantage? 4. How do I judge and evaluate the effectiveness of a text? Summative: Students will read news articles and editorials, and will write their own editorial(s) in response to news article(s). Formative: Students will organize, construct, and visually present a personal research paper in MLA Format. Unit 3 Coming of Age: To Kill a Mockingbird Unit Length: 18 Days Enduring Understandings 1. Good readers using strategies during reading to make inferences. 2. Good readers use details from the text to analyze writer s purpose, analyze theme, and analyze character. 3. Authors use word, action, and emotion to develop characters. 4. An author controls the story by using a particular point of view. Essential Questions 1. How do we identify and explain the relationship between main ideas and supporting details? 2. How do authors develop characters through word, action, and emotion? 3. What are the advantages of the author using a particular point of view? Summative: Quotation Connection; Storyboard; Character Map; Reader s Theater; STEAL Chart; Alternative Points of View; Historical Connection; Interactive Notebooks. Formative: 5-paragraph literary analysis paper discussing how characters are developed in To Kill a Mockingbird through their words and actions by answering either of the following questions: 1. How is the nature of courage understood and described in the story? 2. Why does injustice sometimes prevail in our society?

3 Unit 4 - Poetry Enduring Understandings 1. Reading is an active process. Essential Questions 1. What do good readers do? Summative: Bio Poem; Interactive Notebooks. Formative: 5-paragraph literary analysis essay comparing and contrasting the literacy elements of two poems and how the elements of literature contribute to the poem s message and theme. Unit 5 Epic Poem: The Odyssey Essential Understandings 1. Reading is an active process. Essential Questions 1. What do good readers do? Summative: Interactive Notebooks. Formative: 5-paragraph sequential expository essay with cited textual evidence as support, concluding with classroom presentation.

4 Unit 6 Drama: Romeo & Juliet Enduring Understandings Essential Questions Unit Length: 15 Days 1. Reading is an active process. 1. Who is Shakespeare? 2. What are the essential elements of drama? 3. How do characters change throughout a story, and how does this contribute to the overall purpose of the story? 4. How do the elements of literature illustrate author s purpose 5. How does literature relate to society? 6. How are characters motivated to act? Summative: Summative: ACT Test Prep; Chunking Text; Quotation Connection; Shakespeare Webquest; Love Found Poem; Sonnet; Character Soliloquy; STEAL Chart; Character Obituaries; Plot Diagram with Quotations; Interactive Notebooks. Running Question who is to blame for Romeo & Juliet s death? Formative: 5-paragraph essay analyzing a main character from the play, focusing on thesis development and citing textual evidence to support your opinion. Formative: Movie Soundtrack
