Sustainia100 Finding solutions for a sustainable tomorrow The Sustainia100 is a pool of 100 powerful sustainable solutions that will take us to Sustainia. It is great ideas, innovations and technologies that helps build a sustainable tomorrow. Behind the Sustainia100 solutions are the people, companies, communities and organizations that represent the greatest story never told: that bottom-up change is in fact already happening at an impressive speed. From March 28th to April 20th 2012 Sustainia invites corporations, organizations and engaged citizens to present their sustainable solutions, either a as video submission or through our online application form. All submitted projects will be taken into consideration for the Sustainia100 and thereby enter the run-up for the Sustainia Award. We welcome sustainability projects ranging from local community initiatives to large scale technology solutions. Our objective is to showcase those sustainable solutions that already exist and will help us build Sustainia. All Sustainia100 solutions must have a relation to at least two of the three elements of sustainable development; social, economic, and environmental. In addition Sustainia and its partners have developed six overall criteria that guide the selection process of the Sustainia100. A Sustainia100 solution should be; Ready and available, Scalable, Collaborative, Transformative, Cost effective, and Increasing quality of life. Sustainia is about engaging society in sustainability on all levels. That is why we have reserved 10 of the Sustainia100 solutions for the best ideas presented by individuals in the worldwide sustainability community. By presenting their idea, either in writing or a video on YouTube, individuals can submit their solution, which will be selected on the basis of a vote on our social media platforms. The Sustainia100 catalogue will be delivered to decision-makers at a high-level Sustainia Event on June 20 at the Rio+20, United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. We hope it will to inspire discussions at the summit, which has the potential to be the most important and largest gathering of world leaders in recent time. One of the Sustainia100 solutions will also be honoured for its outstanding performance in sustainability and be given the Sustainia Award. The announcement and award ceremony takes place at the Global Sustainability Forum in Copenhagen in September

The principles of sustainability The concept of sustainable development was first introduced by the World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987 in the report "Our Common Future" (the Brundtland report). The report defines sustainable development as development that meets needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Economic growth and development create increasingly difficult challenges and urban development holds great opportunities for meeting these challenges. Innovative urban planning concepts such as Ecocities, Smart Cities and Sustainable Urbanism have emerged, aiming to adopt sustainable concepts into design and lifestyle of both cities and buildings. Improved accessibility with non-motorised transport, green urban spaces, smart transport solutions, energy efficient buildings, smart energy grids and waste recycling are all elements of modern urban planning. Sustainable urban development is a relatively new concept. It is expected to undergo a radical development over the decades to come. However, planning and use of non-urban areas - or even isolated projects - also calls for sustainable solutions in another context. In this case, infrastructure such as opportunities for energy and water supply, modes of transportation, waste handling etc. are to be considered in a non-urban but still cost-effective perspective. The possible interrelation of the three sustainable development dimensions is represented below: The environmental dimension pursues the issues of resource consumption, waste production and recycling and environment pollution, and therefore it has gained an increasing role in project planning and design over the last 20 years. The environmental dimension, which is predominantly of a technical character, aims to protect nature against pollution and other human disturbance as well as preservation of natural resources for future generations. Sustainable design involves all aspects of planning, including landscape, public facilities, buildings and infrastructure. The social dimension acknowledges that design has a tremendous impact on the very quality of life, including human interaction, physical and mental health, safety, interaction between nature and built environment, employment etc. The economic dimension is a key dimension in sustainable projects. Economic resources are limited and any extra spending on environmentally or socially beneficial solutions must be balanced against the possible additional costs incurred. 2

All solutions in Sustainia100 must have a relation to at least two of the main sustainability dimensions and must contribute substantially to the holistics of sustainability. The Sustainia100 are examples of solutions and ideas that will take us to Sustainia. The three main sustainability dimensions will further be expanded into criteria for selecting the Sustainia100. The Selection Process The Sustainia100 solutions are identified through a process engaging international organizations, global companies and civil society. From March 28 th to April 20 th 2012 we invite all businesses, organizations or engaged citizens to present possible Sustainia100 solutions to us. The research on the Sustainia100 solutions is carried out by Sustainia in close cooperation with our partners, including United Nations Global Compact and R20 Regions of Climate Action. Final selection of the Sustainia100 solutions is conducted on the basis of our overall criteria (see below) by the Sustainia Secretariat together with leading consulting engineering group Ramboll. Sustainia100 solutions are selected on the basis of a number of overall criteria. The selection process is carried out qualitatively with the objective to identify those solutions that are in line with the vision of Sustainia as described in the Guide to Sustainia. Sustainia and Ramboll have developed a set of criteria on which the selection process will be bases. In addition to the criteria, a comprehensive list of guideline is available within the areas similar those in Guide to Sustainia ; Buildings, Cities, Energy, and Transportation. Submissions are though not restricted to fall within these categories. 3

To make sure we engage and embrace civil society, ten solutions are reserved for ideas presented by individuals in the worldwide sustainability community. Individuals have the option to upload a video presentation of an idea to YouTube and send it to us. The selection of which civil society ideas will be part of the Sustainia100 is carried out on the basis of the Sustainia100 criteria and a vote on our social media platforms. Overall Criteria A Sustainia100 solution should be: 1. Ready and available Sustainia is not an imaginary Utopia; it is a concrete proposal on how we could live a better life. The Sustainia100 solutions should be based on accessible technology and fully developed solutions moving us towards a sustainable society. 2. Scalable Too many innovative sustainability projects are never transferred or duplicated in other businesses, organizations, communities, etc. Sustainia100 solutions should have the potential to be transferred to other settings and provide inspirational efforts on overcoming the problems of scale. 3. Collaborative We need to join forces if Sustainia is to be reality. The Sustainia100 solutions should transcend national and cultural borders and work towards building partnerships between societal sectors such as civil society, business and the public sector. 4. Transformative A transformation of key elements of society is needed to reach Sustainia. The Sustainia100 solutions should help change practices by companies, governments or individuals in a direction that is fundamentally more sustainable than today. 5. Cost effective Solutions must be cost efficient and affordable in order to gain popularity. The Sustainia100 solutions should be cost effective and socio-economic optimal at the level of society or city. The solutions that achieve a sustainability target in the most affordable way should be preferred to more expensive solutions. 6. Increasing quality of life sustainable life can be better and more fun than life as we know it today this is a prerogative for bringing about real change. The Sustainia100 solutions should enhance the quality of life for citizens. 4

Guidelines for Solutions Sustainia is a construction site. We are continuously developing the vision of Sustainia and model for the sustainable society. The first edition of Guide to Sustainia contained chapters within four categories; cities, homes, energy and transportation. On the basis of that pool of knowledge we have developed a set of guidelines for what we would like a Sustainia100 to be able to achieve within each category. Those solutions that do not fall into one of the categories will not have the luxury of a set of guidelines but they will be crucial in our efforts to further develop Sustainia onto new areas of the sustainable society and we strongly encourage all sorts of sustainability projects to feed in their solutions. The guidelines are divided into each of the three principles of sustainability; social, economic, and environmental together with a set of overall guidelines. The objective of such guidelines is to provide applicants an idea of which solutions we are looking for and help applicants presenting their projects in a way that focus on all elements of sustainability. CITIES GUIDELINES: A Sustainia100 cities solution could be one that: Overall sustainability guidelines for cities - Encourages smart cities solution by e.g. city-wide infrastructure for mobility and energy to the benefit of citizens - Retrofits existing infrastructure - Spurs sustainable innovative efforts in cities - Increases collaboration between government and citizens - Encourages previous developed areas - Encourages development near public transit systems, by e.g. location-efficient mortgages. - Provides resilience i.e. the city s ability to deal with anticipated challenges such as climate impacts, energy price and supply volatility, rapid population increases, and fresh-water demands. Social guidelines - Engages citizens in key issues and decisions - Supports a cultural, demographic and economical diversity of citizens to avoid segregation of races, income classes or commercial from residential. - Provides a safe and crime-reducing outdoor environment e.g. by the use of considerate place shaping, street light, security lighting, prevention of noise pollution etc. - Increases liveability in cities - Communicates sustainability to citizens - Takes responsibility and addresses societal challenges of cities - Demonstrates transparency to citizens Economical guidelines - Supports economic progress for citizens and stimulates green growth 5
