After the finalization of the pilot qualitative research undertaken by a team of ALBA and AUEB researchers in the Ellinogermaniki Agogi Schools, the actual qualitative survey will be conducted in five high schools-lyceums and one university in several Greek regions. 7 New Knowledge Created at ALBA We aspire to be a leading centre of academic excellence in business management in Europe. We are driven by the ambition to contribute to the generation of new knowledge by undertaking state-of-theart research that is internationally recognized for its quality and is published in the best international academic journals and in books by international publishers (Excerpt from ALBA s Mission) ABSTRACTS OF ALBA s FACULTY RECENT PAPERS Nikolaos Tessaromatis (with Mario Levis), Style rotation strategies: Issues of implementation, The Journal of Portfolio Management, Vol. 30, 4, Summer Effective implementation of market timing and style rotation strategies poses challenging questions to an active fund manager. In addition to the problems associated in devising a truly viable forecasting model, style rotation has direct implications on portfolio risk constraints and transaction costs; furthermore, implementation depends on institutional constraints and the in-house investment philosophy. Using a variety of implementation rules that explicitly control for risk, we find that style rotation strategies are profitable for investors with different benchmarks and various risk constraints. More specifically, style rotation is as feasible for hedge fund managers who target absolute returns as it is for traditional fund managers who face tight risk constraints. The break-even transaction costs required before the style rotation strategies become unprofitable, are reasonable especially for fund managers who invest in medium sized companies. Kostas Axarloglou, Labor market conditions and foreign direct investment flows in the US States, Atlantic Economic Journal, March 2004, 32, 1, pp This study finds that FDI inflows in the U.S. States are strongly influenced by industry and state specific labor productivity and also by state spending on education. A 10% increase in the productivity of labor in a given State increases the inflows of capital in the same State by approximately 11%. Moreover, a 10% increase in spending on education in a given State leads to a 12% increase in FDI inflows in the same State. These findings are quite relevant for the ongoing discussion on the lack of FDI inflows in the Greek economy. Perhaps, if FDI inflows are desirable for the Greek economy, then policy makers should undertake policies that lead to a more educated and productive labor force. After all that is what multinational seem to appreciate when entering a foreign market. Sarah Drakopoulou Dodd (with Sarah L Jack, Alistair Anderson), "The role of family members in entrepreneurial networks:beyond the boundaries of the family firm, Family Business Review, Forthcoming. Research has traditionally concentrated on formal kin involvement in the family business. This study investigates if, to what extent, and how entrepreneurs capitalised on resources embedded in the family, but beyond the formal traditionally-defined boundaries of the family firm. Employing both quantitative and qualitative approaches, the study finds that about one quarter of our sample s entrepreneurial network ties were kin, and that most of these worked outside the formal family firm. These ties provided a range of very important resources, both professional and affective in nature. Such beneficial ties extend the family firm without incurring the typical hazards of external linkages. 8 Experience from our Alumni smooth materialization of a complex venue operational plan. Everything seems uncomplicated when preparing the plans. But when the implementation part comes, then you have to be as precise, as fast and as flexible as you have to be. Another aspect was to enforce the accomplishment of the contractual obligations having to meet all demands and expectations of the constituent groups such as athletes, VIPs, spectators, media and broadcasters. In addition, I faced a big challenge by having to maintain the venue team s spirit balanced and motivated and all that by promoting the adaptation of a multi-national mentality. Finally, I had to meet the expectation of ATHENS 2004 by implementing the philosophy Unique Games on a Human Scale. I would like to think that I contributed to that in the best possible way. 4. Do you believe that the ALBA Professional MBA helped you acquire the knowledge and skills in order to be able to meet the requirements of We interviewed Mr. Vassilis Kokkolis (P-MBA 5), Deputy Venue Manager at the Olympic Stadium, during the Olympic Games ATHENS Dear Mr. Kokkolis, can you please describe your role and responsibilities in the ATHENS 2004 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games? Working for the Olympic Games, especially in my country, was a dream of mine. In the Organizing Committee I have been working since 2002 and it was a valuable experience, which changed many aspects of my life. For one and a half year, before we moved to the venues, my main responsibility was the operational design of the Olympic Stadium as well as the planning of its operation during the Olympic and the Paralympic Games (Opening & Closing Ceremonies, Athletics, Football). In addition to that, I had the responsibility of planning and designing the transition schedules (Opening Ceremony to Athletics, Athletics to Football Final and back to Athletics, Athletics to Closing Ceremony, etc). We moved to the Olympic Stadium three months before the Games. There, as the Deputy Venue Manager, my responsibilities were the implementation of the operational planning, the coordination and the management of all the functional areas that composed the Venue Team, following the predetermined requirements and specifications. Our target was to provide to all constituent groups the level of service that has been agreed during the planning. Finally, one of my main duties was the issue resolution before they become problems in the different sections involved. 2. Which do you believe are the main ingredients of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games success? What was the contribution of volunteers? Enthusiasm, native pride, will, passion, and dedication were the main characteristics of the Olympic personnel. The main ingredients of the Olympic Games success were the passion, the dedication and the professionalism of all the people involved. But what made the difference was the flexibility and innovation, which are strong parts of our The main ingredients of the Olympic Games success were the passion, the dedication and the professionalism of all the people involved. But what made the difference was the flexibility and innovation, which are strong parts of our Greek nature. Greek nature. The Olympic Volunteers were the motivating force and the soul of the Games. These were the people who helped the athletes, the visitors, and the spectators at the unique event. Even though Greeks were not famous for their sense of voluntarism, our volunteers diffused to the Athens Olympic Games the exceptional atmosphere, which was completely different than that of the previous Olympic Games. In Greece, volunteers faced the Olympic project as their opportunity to be a part of something immense, of something that for Greeks The was ALBA a national Insider matter: the Olympic Games that returned to their birthplace. Everyone was happy at the end having experienced the unique opportunity of being a part of the magic of the Games. 3. Which were the main challenges that you faced as Deputy Venue Manager of the Olympic Stadium? Every aspect of this complex event included a challenge for me. Probably the most difficult part was the such a demanding position, as the one you had in the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games? The Olympic Games enclose two main characteristics that make them unique as an opportunity to work for: They were the biggest project ever for a small country like Greece, with thousands of parameters. Most of them were not sport oriented; yet they had the complexity of a universal project.only few people that worked for the Olympic Games had done something similar in the past. Based on the above, it is easy to understand that Olympic Games where an ideal opportunity to expand the knowledge and skills gained by the ALBA Professional MBA, as the implementation of all aspects of an operational planning cycle, Innovation, Establishing and facilitating procedures, Leadership, Negotiation and Human Resources. Mr. Kokkolis, thank you very much for your time! Volume 1, Issue 4 Page 8
