3 Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement 3 The Search Franklin College has launched a search for a vice president for development and alumni engagement. The search committee invites nominations of, and applications from, accomplished individuals who will provide this renowned, residential college with outstanding leadership and direction for a stratetgic and aggressive advancement program leading to an enhanced resource base for the college. Franklin College Founded in 1834, Franklin College provides a liberal arts and sciences education that fosters independent thinking, innovation, leadership and action for ever-changing professions and a globally-connected world. With an emphasis on engaged learning opportunities, Franklin offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in more than 50 majors, a Master of Science degree in athletic training, and plans to offer a Master of Science degree in physician assistant studies in Franklin College is proud to be part of Greater Indianapolis and values collaboration benefiting communities and inspiring students. Students enjoy the comfort and safety of suburban living, while also experiencing the many opportunities Indianapolis has to offer. It is noteworthy that Franklin began admitting women in 1842, thereby becoming Indiana s first coeducational institution and the seventh in the nation; that spirit of inclusiveness still characterizes the college today. Professional and leadership development, as well as civic engagement, are strategically integrated into departmental and liberal arts curricula and require students to connect theory with practice beyond the walls of the traditional classroom. In 2007, the Franklin College faculty reaffirmed their commitment to liberal arts ideals by endorsing a new curriculum, Opening a World of Possibilities, which emphasizes three core competencies: interacting with the world, experiencing the world and understanding the world. Ninety-five percent of Franklin graduates are employed or attending graduate school within six months of their graduation. Our community is exceptionally proud that 83 percent of our graduates applying for medical school since 1981 have been accepted, more than 1.5 times the national rate. Other students are regularly accepted into graduate programs for law, education, optometry and dentistry. Financial Snapshot Annual Budget Estimated Total Assets Estimated Endowment Total Long-Term Debt $38 million $133.7 million $80.6 million $6.9 million
4 4 Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement City of Franklin Franklin College is nestled just to the southeast of downtown Franklin, a charming, small city with a population of 23,000 residents. The city of Franklin and the college enjoy a strong and collaborative partnership and work together, annually hosting guests from Franklin s sister-city Kuji, Japan to build ties that can help promote cultural exchange and economic opportunity. City of Indianapolis Downtown Indianapolis is a short 25-minute drive from campus. It is known as the Amateur Sports Capital of the World, hosting many elite NCAA collegiate and Olympic events, and is the home of the Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Colts. Replete with museums and theaters, Indianapolis was recently cited as the number two city for arts and culture by Business Insider. 5 Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement 5 Leadership Opportunities The vice president for development and alumni engagement joins Franklin College at an exciting time in our history. The leadership and energy from a recently-appointed president, Thomas J. Minar, Ph.D., the support from an engaged board of trustees, the vision for experiential learning, professions and health sciences within the context of a liberal arts institution, enthusiasm for a new strategic plan and a history of deep alumni engagement make this a distinctive opportunity for an entrepreneurial and strategic thinker, planner and leader. President Minar came to Franklin after seven years as vice president of development and alumni relations at American University in Washington, DC, his third vice presidency and fourth position as a chief development officer. He is eager to have a partner in development and alumni organization and donor strategy who will lead the institution to new heights in advancement success. The president recognizes generous room for improvement in institutional capacity in development and looks forward to discussing that with candidates. Reporting to the president, the new vice president will be responsible for the planning and implementation of a comprehensive advancement program focused on growth. There is considerable room and enthusiasm for innovation at Franklin in these functions, marked by the groundwork of the Thinking Forward Embracing New Dimensions strategic plan. President Minar seeks to find a colleague fundraising professional with expertise and vision for leading an advancement and alumni engagement program which carries forward the principal characteristics important to Franklin s relationship with its students: intimate relationships that help individuals achieve their personal goals and advance society through leadership in community. The vice president will serve on the president s cabinet, a group of colleagues who work to achieve the college s vision and execute Thinking Forward Embracing New Dimensions with commitment and vigor. The vice president will benefit not only from President Minar s advancement experience, but also from his commitment to expending time and energy to development and alumni programs.
6 6 Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement Responsibilities of the vice president include: Develop long- and short-term strategic development and alumni engagement plans. Provide the president with appropriate plans of action, implementation, evaluation and progress reports with regard to development and alumni engagement programs. Engage the president and appropriate trustees and other volunteers with donors and prospects. Provide advice, counsel and staff support to the president in all matters relating to fundraising and alumni engagement. Engage, mentor and motivate the work of the division s staff, building efficient operations and adopting best practices and analytical approaches to our work. Manage completion of the Campaign for the Sciences, with a current goal of less than $2 million additional pledges, but with many rich additional needs and opportunities. Assess possibilities for future campaign activity and prepare the college and prospect base for that activity. Provide strategic leadership and tactical support for a critical, budget-supporting annual fund effort. Actively participate in college marketing and branding activities. Utilizing development staff, and in collaboration with marketing, admissions and communications staff, develop and implement a communications program that generates support for fundraising goals and objectives both on and off the campus. Solicit support for the college from alumni, parents, friends and philanthropic corporations and foundations in pursuit of current, endowment and capital funding objectives. The vice president is expected to lead by example, developing relationships with key prospects, soliciting major gifts, and insuring that the president and trustees are effectively engaged and supported in fundraising activities and relations with external constituents. Work to adopt data-rich practices, including the implementation of a new donor management system and Gravyty, a data analytics prospect identification system. As a member of the president s cabinet, recommend and assist in developing college policies. Recommend and implement college policy and procedures relating to development and alumni engagement, including capital campaigns, and/or other projects as authorized by the president and board of trustees. Serve as principal staff liaison to the development and trusteeship committees of the board of trustees.
7 Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement 7 Direct the preparation and submission of the budget for the office of development and alumni engagement. Act with a sense of urgency. The vice president of development and alumni engagement will be a fundraising professional with expertise and vision for leading a full-service development program and an effective alumni engagement operation. The college is in the final throes of a campaign for the sciences and the construction and renovation of science facilities will begin in 2017 as the result of that campaign. Franklin College offers an exciting opportunity for an enterprising leader to breathe energy into advancing the college s philanthropic efforts at a critical time in the history of the college. The position benefits from a partnership with a president committed to giving significant time and energy to resource development and a cabinet committed to achieving the college s vision and executing the strategic plan to ensure student success, realize strategic growth and build sustainable foundations. The new vice president will play a significant role in inspiring a culture of philanthropy for Franklin College. Required Qualifications Candidates should display a combination of professional experiences and personal qualities that will serve the expectations as outlined above.
